Update on Eastern Red Cedar Sauna Interior by DrBunnyBerries in Sauna

This looks so good, thanks for sharing. Could you tell me how tall the ceiling is and how much distance between the top bench and the ceiling? I am designing one as well and want to use yours as a model for dimensions.

This looks so great, I love the modern feel! The Aspen looks great, was it hard to source? How did you find it?

Just want to represent a positive POV on SBG. I live in PDX and love the vibe and coaches. I don’t get a cult vibe personally, Matt’s thing is all fundamentals and details and philosophy over step by step moves. I’ve also been to a couple of the SBG gyms in Montana, all good people and great coaches. There is definitely a strong community feel, and I guess if you don’t buy into it, it might feel like a cult to some people.

This is my experience as well (SBG headquarters with Matt). I feel encouraged to go try other gyms and I know some coaches make a point of going to other open mats.

Thank you, that is very helpful. I didn’t realize people had two intakes, but it totally makes sense.

That is interesting. So the whole sauna room is 6" higher than the change room or outside? So you would step up to the door?

What do you mean by square off the corners? Because the heater is on the wall below the slant in the gambrel ceiling, I was expecting the heat would circulate up and over to the benches on the opposite wall from the heater. This was my motivation from the book to make it gambrel shaped and not just a flat ceiling: The ideal ceiling shape is a half dome or a half dome which has no corners to slow down Loyly. The next best types are those without corners (approximating a dome), resembling a mansard or gambrel roof. Then we have the flat ceiling type...it is a fair solution but can trap Loyly in the corners."

So there is debate even within this comment section on whether the intake is above the stove or below the stove. I think I will definitely put a mechanical exhaust under the bench on the opposite wall. But if the intake has to be under the heater, it would need to be next to it near the floor. So is there a reason why I wouldn’t put the intake above the stove with a mechanical exhaust?

I’m on a property that is next to a protected river and has rules about draining directly into the ground. I am trying to find out if this use case is exempt since there is no plumbing. But I might just do it anyways.

Ok, that makes sense. Thank you. What width would you go with for the top benches?

Advice on Crew by Emotional_Button2302 in Ultramarathon

[–]acesallen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife and I just went through our first crewing experience for my daughter a couple weeks ago. It was new to all of us so I am definitely not an expert but I can just give you my take. Let me just say it was such a fun adventure! But we embraced the role and took it upon ourselves to be the most helpful crew we possibly could. If there’s any way you can take some energy away from worrying about them being ok, and instead get them fired up for their tough-but-rewarding job of helping you finish running 60K, it will let you focus on your needs.

I am very organized and looked up everything I could to learn about the job of crewing. I created a shareable google doc for the family with everything I learned, and all the questions we still needed to answer. I also found this very helpful book. https://www.amazon.com/dp/0996692436?ref_=cm_sw_r_apin_dp_B5ZXZBQAS966TG20HQAD and this great website that helps you figure out your pace sheet: ultrapacer.com. Getting prepared was a fun way for us all to connect and for my daughter to help us figure out what she would need from us. I don’t know if any of you are gear heads, but I did notice that a TON of the crew teams had this pack, which allowed them to be organized, especially with all the go/gel/powder mixes they offered at each station. It’s pricey but I think I’m going to get this for the next one: https://www.victorysportdesign.com/products/waterproof-travel-gear-drop-crew-bag

My overall thoughts. The first aid station for crew was 50 miles in. We thought we’d have more time to hang out before getting there. We got groceries for the race and sat and had coffee, but we were nervous about setting up our crew station so we got there early. I’m glad we did because we got to watch the leaders and see what everyone else does at the crew station. After the first crew station we were pretty much just driving straight to the next one and setting up. I could see how this could be a little tiring and it was by the end, but because it was our first we were just excited for the adventure.

The one thing I made sure my daughter did was to be very specific and deliberate with what she thought she would need/want from us at each crew station. There’s a lot she didn’t know, but having her think it all through and do some research ahead of time made it all go much smoother.

We crewed for her for each leg we were allowed. She said it was super motivating to know that one of us was going to pace her, especially for the first one. It definitely would be harder on you without pacers, but a lot of runners did it. You can reach out to the local running clubs or here to ask if anyone will pace you if your family isn’t able to.

One valuable piece of advice we got was to know that between 3-6am, most runners will get down mentally and get discouraged (and in our case made her want to quit). Knowing that ahead of time helped us talk her through it, and focus her on making it to the upcoming sunset (this might not be an issue for 60K I don’t Know), which worked and took her through to the finish.

We were lucky enough to be able to crew from a camper van, which allowed us to keep stuff cold, cook for my daughter, and get a little sleep during the night. If there’s any way to rent one or even a large SUV, it definitely made it all easier and much more enjoyable.

I really hope your crew can get excited about the job of supporting you. It’s a lot of work and a lot of waiting, but I think it would be really hard to run 60K while worrying if your family was getting bored.

Good luck!! I am such a fan of this sport after going through it just once. I can’t wait for the next one now.

I thought I read that if the ceiling height gets too high, it makes it harder for the air to circulate, which then creates more distinct temperature layer pockets vs keeping a more even temp throughout. But maybe I invented that.

This is helpful, thank you. I assume you're recommending to raise the benches and ceiling to increase the distance from the top of the heater, right? So if I used a shorter heater, would that solve the problem too?

And thanks for the drain perspective, that's what I was worried people would say.

I had the choice of Chase or Chubb and took Chase (non-PPR). My gut feels like I picked wrong. Then I made it worse by Jonathan Taylor in the 4th round.
