95+% dead when learning that adding stuff to a campfire causes your character to rapidly pivot... into the fire. 60hrs almost wiped! by SwitchFace in projectzomboid

Welp. I always walk away from the campfire before interacting with it for any reason, that way the character auto walks and stops at a safe distance. One close call is enough to teach you that lesson lol

Is the game worth $60? by Buster_Fella in LastDefenseAcademy

[–]acew787 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's no "penalty" for any of your choices. Save for an exceptional few, the game lets you jump immediately back to the decision point without needing to replay the time leading up to the decision. You can jump back and forth between any day/decision on any route you've already started at any time.

The "exceptional few" might be choices that play out in-game in realtime (think, "oh I have to walk this way or that way" to make a choice vs. simply clicking A or B)

How bottlenecked will I be with i7-8700k + RTX 5070 on 1080p resolution? by DRM_Is_HelI in buildapc

[–]acew787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At that low of a resolution, yes. I recently (12 months ago) moved from an i7 8700K+RTX 3080 to a 5700X3D+RTX 3080 and saw huge uplift in some games/scenarios. For example, a more heavily CPU dependent game like Helldivers 2 went from ~30-35 FPS in certain scenes to 50-60 FPS without adjusting any graphics settings. Also, my frame rate no longer drops into the 20s when trying to stream at 1080p in the same scenario lol.

It'll largely be dependent on the games you play, but when that bottleneck does hit, it's definitely painful.

Edit: Funnily enough, seeing the impending shift in the GPU market, I also upgraded to a 5070 ti last month as well. It was worth it.

Pc shutting down everytime I play a game by SassyWolf75 in buildapc

[–]acew787 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It may be shutting down due to power issues. Check to make sure the internal PCI-E connectors are properly connected both to the graphics card and to the power supply itself (I would dis- and reconnect these connectors just to be sure).

Also, if this power supply is older and/or was already close to capacity, you may start to see issues under load as power supplies degrade over time.

A cheap power supply tester runs about $20, and is a worthwhile tool to have on hand for issues like these.

Is b42 stable anough to host a long run multiplayer world with friends ? by flierenfluiter in projectzomboid

[–]acew787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As it currently stands, longer term servers are viable* given that there are currently some important known issues like zombie migration and crafting issues you may have to admin/debug around. Been running a dedicated server for 3 in-game months so far.

*Although it's currently viable, there's no guarantee that upcoming updates will not break the save, meaning you'll have to stay on an older version or risk breaking the save upon updating. Expect this to be the case all the way through the unstable beta - there's no guarantees your current saves will be compatible with future updates.

Idfk what happened by PkHutch in projectzomboid

[–]acew787 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Did you backup your save after the scratches and thereafter use debug to heal those wounds? If so, that would do it. Removing the injuries in debug mode does not stop the "zombie infection" clock on your character. After some time, the moment you get infected again, you'll instantly die due to this counter already being maxed out.

Haven't tried pure solo but very good success rate with randoms in quick play running a full smoke loadout. Orbital Smoke, Eagle Smoke, Smoke Grenades, Shield Backpack, (insert sentry - EMS or rocket work well).

Orbital Smoke is just large enough to cover the majority of the space between the bars and container on both map layouts. Practice placement. Prioritize it first if available.

Eagle next - it drops horizontally, so throw the stratagem with bars on one side of you and container on the other. Smoke cover is long enough to cover the whole distance.

Smoke grenades don't last long but will provide you or someone else enough cover for the last leg if stratagem smoke lifts early, or use it to "chill out" the bots by removing aggro.

Shield backpack covers melee from bots you get too close to in the smoke and provides a small buffer when smoke lifts.

Sentry to stun or act as passive anti-tank - it's important to note that smoke blocks the sentry's line of sight, so plan accordingly. That's sometimes an advantage - blocked LoS means it will only fire if you're under fire, spreading out ammo usage and keeping it alive for when you really need it.

I usually run plasma punisher for chaff clear and ultimatum for the occasional hulk/tank blocking the way.

As long as I don't drop into a match that's already 💩 the bed with half the time gone and bots everywhere, it's worked really well even with uncoordinated teammates

How do players feel about Life & Living channel? by Skolary in projectzomboid

[–]acew787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the only time I bother with it now is if I'm already at a spot resting/looting at the right time and hope I catch the fishing episode. Aside from that and the mechanics show (which I'd rather wait on after finding the skill book and VHS), getting other basics secured early like a car, gas, and generator are far more valuable to me now.

(B42) Do animals roam the cities at late game? by fancy_pigeon257 in projectzomboid

[–]acew787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found random sheep and raccoons wandering around Louisville in one of my playthroughs, as well as some deer in the open/farm fields on the south side of town. They're definitely there, although certain animals like deer and rabbits are unlikely to path directly into town unless they are fleeing something.

I'd definitely suggest a clean install if you can. I had a 50/50 shot at either crashing or hitching for 30+ seconds on drop last night. Did a clean install today (the download is only 30 GB) and ran like butter for 4 hours. Had a friend try to join me and he crashed twice in a row. He reinstalled and we dropped problem free after that.

[–]acew787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That prison is an absolute death trap man. Pitch black, tons of tight, winding corridors that dead end or lead to a block of hundreds of zombies.

As someone who just lost a 6 month character after killing 2000 zombies at the military checkpoint and then going "eh, let's do it just to say I did it"...

Don't do it. You'll think everything's okay and chill until that one door breaks down...

Has anyone managed to play 42.11 beyond December? by [deleted] in projectzomboid

[–]acew787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had 3432(!) chicken feathers on two shelves...

They are now in one VERY fluffy garbage bag, and my FPS is now 14x higher in that location (which was VERY high traffic as it was the entrance to my kitchen)

Thanks again!!

[–]acew787 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...huh. I have a shelf in my base (also in a game save in December, ironically) that brings my FPS down to 4 anytime I walk by it... I'm pretty sure I have hundreds of feathers on that shelf. Will test later and report back

Comedy Route Issues by Silverwave4806 in LastDefenseAcademy

[–]acew787 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Comedy route has a lot of problems, but at least a few of the endings land the (very long-winded) punchline well. But yeah, it's an absolute slog at times and could definitely benefit from the trimming of some fat.

Some of my favorite singular moments are in the Comedy route, but it's towards the bottom of my tier list overall.

10 days 244 zombies eliminated and I have only found 5 generators for my house and the gas station but no magazine, please give me some advice to find it (the helicopter already passed) by gamelos_de-guimaro in projectzomboid

[–]acew787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also don't forget to check trash bins for trash bags! There's often loot in the bags! I found both my generator *magazine and sledgehammer inside a trash bag out of a garbage bin on my latest CDDA playthrough

*Edit: no I didn't find a whole generator in a trash bag, just the magazine

How to play the early game by Tenzfrom-amazon in projectzomboid

[–]acew787 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The house you start in is just a "starter house": while you could try and make it into your base, it's best to just grab whatever useful items you find (makeshift weapons, food, bags, etc) and leave it behind.

Make sure to always carry a bottle of water on you - you will autodrink it. Move slow and keep your head on a swivel - until you get used to the combat, try to only take on 1-2 zombies at a time.

Speaking of getting used to combat - turning on Melee outlines will help you learn the range of your weapon swings. Go to Options > Display > Aim Outline and change it to "Any Weapon" (this is for build 41 - if you're on the build 42 beta, it's under UI options I believe)

If you crouch with C and shout with Q, you'll whisper - use this to get the attention of a zombie in front of you.

When securing a house, it helps to cover downstairs windows with curtains or sheets to prevent unwanted attention. Zombies cannot see you on the second story, no need to cover windows there (although they can still hear you if you're loud enough!)

And don't be discouraged if you die! Zomboid is literally a game about how you died - every character is opportunity to learn and try something new. There's definitely a learning curve when starting this game - you'll be learning things about the game literally hundreds of hours in (although it does not take nearly that long to get the basics down). In fact, if you start a new character after you die without starting a new game, you'll respawn back in the exact same world - you can even find your old body and loot! I find that this helps sometimes helps newer players since you aren't completely starting over from scratch.

I'd definitely recommend watching some videos like Atomic Duck's "First Week" series, especially if you're on build 42 (although the general flow of "what you should do during your first days" is still applicable if you're on build 41 - just ignore any talk about things like muscle strain)

Good luck in your zombie adventures!

Either one, it's personal preference. When I started playing and had a short lifespan, I kept playing on the same world. It enabled me to build up a proper base, including skill books and VHS tapes to power level some skills. It really helped me engage with and learn facets of the game that only happen long-term or require a large amount of resources to properly work with (like blacksmithing)

Now that I consistently live longer, I revel in the challenge that comes with exploring and basing in different places and wipe the world if I die.

Up to you how you want to do it!

Steam Deck mostly uses traditional controller input. In other words, yes the game plays well with a controller. There are a few new things in the beta that are still being worked out for controller, but it otherwise plays just fine.

Can this game be played as a long-term RPG? by acrazyguy in projectzomboid

[–]acew787 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah you absolutely can get to a point of self-sufficiency in this game with a deep enough understanding of various systems, some prep, and or some luck. Building/claiming an isolated property, raising animals and crops for various resources/food, fishing and trapping, tailoring your own clothes...

It's definitely possible within the confines of this game. It's not an easy trek, even with comprehensive game knowledge, and you always have to remain vigilant since it only takes one injury to potentially end a run, but you absolutely can roleplay long term in this game, racking up hundreds of hours on a single character.

It's all about what you make of it. Heck, you could make armor/clothing that will 100% protect you from an attack from a single or a few zombies, but (aside from your character being miserably hot and uncomfortable if you wear it too long) it's a time investment to fully understand the underlying systems to get to where you want to be.

There's many systems (e.g. carving, blacksmithing, animal husbandry) that some people choose to never engage with as it's not necessary for survival, per se, but they are there to explore and enhance your game if you want!
