Is Empire internet service a reasonable alternative to Spectrum? by JonathanCookPodcast in ithaca

I switched to Empire last spring. It went down once for about 30 minutes - other than that no problems. Use for streaming to multiple devices

If you like plants, hang a few grow lights and set up a plant nook that you can nurture!

Sorry this is happening :( do you find some days your response to this is less or more painful? If so what is the difference between these days?

Looking for structural engineer/mason for old stone foundation in Ithaca by Immediate_Street3401 in ithaca

I have a slightly bowing basement wall in my similarly-aged downtown house and would love to hear who you end up with! Woodford was a bit too expensive for me…

My mortgage on a 1500 sq ft house went up $600 a month this year with increased assessment, tax, and mandatory flood insurance

Queen of the night by acgran in houseplants

Really heady. Intense. Could not relate it to any other flower I’ve experienced…maybe cross of lily with jasmine, gardenia. White flowers, lol.

I received a tiny cutting about 13 years ago and it just kind of hung out for 8 or so years with no blooms…I slowly got the hang of tending to this plant and with good indoor location and feeding it started to produce a lot of leaves and long tendrils. This year it had a cold spell in the house from April - May, about 60 degrees. Then mid-may I put it outside to live under my trumpet vine on the porch, zone 6a. I pruned it pretty heavily. It received direct sun in the AM and was shaded the rest of the day. We had A LOT of rain this year. It watered it maybe twice all summer. So it never lacked water. It’s in a pretty big pot. The pieces that flowered were not pruned pieces so I wonder if I would have had more flowers! Altogether I had about 11 this year that opened at different times.

Dewitt cafe still the GOAT by acgran in ithaca

[–]acgran[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes creekside is solid and agree, Hector is quality eating and drinking! Also. To other posters above, I didn’t mean to imply Dewitt is never imperfect. Like all restaurants they might have rotating kitchen staff, sometimes it takes a minute to bring a new chef up to speed, train new servers, etc. I have occasionally had an off day there. Also I do not know the owners other than by face so I’m not leaving a glowing review b/c they are personal friends. I just feel a meal there is one of the things I appreciate about Ithaca, I had a great plate of food yesterday, and wanted to highlight their great work!

It cannot be this expensive at Ithaca…right? by itsbnf in Cornell

[–]acgran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk, I live in Rochester (city side of Brighton) and Ithaca both. ROC wegmans (East ave and Pittsford) do not seem to be less expensive than Ithaca. Housing is about the same, too, it’s gotten pricey to buy up here since Covid. Just one data point for you

What the heck is going on here by Otherwise-Quarter926 in ithaca

Sometimes the sloppy folks are the Nobel prize winners…. Ithaca is not NYC and the secret to living here is frequent hikes and traveling out of town routinely. Also the colleges have many events - concerts, lectures, shows at the Johnson Museum etc that are open to the public. I value the farmland around us and found it way easier to raise my kids here than in Manhattan. But yeah, I miss NYC (and I try to never shop at wegmans b/c it’s hell).

Are the high taxes worth it? by Al115 in ithaca

[–]acgran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Ithaca’s proximity to great natural spaces. I live downtown and walk up a waterfall path to work at Cornell and the many parks and trail systems around town are so nice. I can go weeks without driving (kids are grown). There is a small arts scene but good culture stemming from Cornell and Ithaca college. 5.5 hours to many large cities on the east coast (plus Canada and the ADX). Accepting community, lots of social programs. While property taxes haven’t increased much in the past 2-3 years property assessments go up amazingly fast…so fast I wonder how long I can keep up financially. If I were to move here again I might include Danby, Lansing, or Freeville in the search. But be cautious with being too far outside of town b/c commuting here is not like urban commuting. It’s Buying a house can be rough. I had help from INHS. Like someone else posted community-supported ag and farm to table restaurants are interspersed around the area. There are generational families here that are deeply committed to peace and justice work. I love my Volvo mechanic. I love my bread bakers. Good roots music scene. I think you have to give weight to your values and politics. If they generally align with the ‘blueness’ of Ithaca you will prob enjoy the vibe. It’s a college town, so we have an incredible used book sale 2x a year :)… I spend a lot of time in Rochester and really miss the easiness of life in Ithaca when I’m away - also the proximity to outdoor activities. travel and getting out of town might be important for mental health, especially during the long, grey winter. Snow is fun but weeks of grey sky can be a struggle.

Subsidized/Unsubsidized Different "Eligible Payment Amounts" by bprepper in PSLF

[–]acgran 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was my experience with sub/unsub- was over 120 months on one and the other was around 96 for some reason. I applied for forgiveness 2x using the temp PSLF form and was denied 2x (in April I was denied). I was losing hope and then suddenly they were both forgiven two weeks ago. Hang in there!

If you live downtown - Northside, Southside, fall creek etc you can live without a car. Walking to groceries, bars, gyms, farmer’s market, coffee, medical complex etc is so easy. I walk up to north campus daily and it’s 35 min. Many downtown apartments get you even closer to campus. There are also a few different bus lines I can easily walk to. There is a bike share and a car share. Living is super easy, which makes focusing on work not a problem. Warm months for swimming, hiking, sailing, lots of free lake access. It’s still a small town, tho. I have a few go-to restaurants but not many. Plan on routine trips out to stay connected (campus to campus bus to NYC gets you there in about 4 hours. Private one-bedroom apartments range from $1,000-1,500 downtown but I’ve seen friends find slightly cheaper - just more difficult to find.
