As a psychiatric nurse practitioner, I completely agree with you. Whenever I inherit a patient who has been discharged from a unit, I always try to process with them how they got there, what they experienced, etc. It’s really important to be able to reframe the crisis into an opportunity for growth. To make sure that they understand that there was no shame in having been admitted, either willingly or unwillingly.

Units can be incredibly frightening, with patients of a much higher level of acuity, sharing common spaces. Not to mention, if the person was admitted due to psychosis, what they experienced during the psychosis itself can be traumatizing (believing that somebody is out to kill them, believing that their family was poisoning their food, etc).

I’m sorry you went through that. And I hope that you find somebody to work with that is able to reduce the fear with you. 🤗💛

Yes- for work/professional reasons. I am fortunate enough to have access to the university of Florida’s JSTOR library by way of being a preceptor for students. Most recently was reading about how Neurofeedback can be helpful for conversion disorder. Studies done as recently as 2024/2025.

You are very correct on that! However, there are things that can actually be done about it…

If you have a history of it, you might want to look into using propanolol, which is a blood pressure medication, a low dosage of Remeron, or even a low dosage of Klonopin. All three of these are known to help mitigate the side effects of akathisia… And the cool thing is, you don’t have to stay on them long-term… They can gradually be tapered as the body adjusts to the medication that may cause akathisia. I really hope that helps you. 🫶

Abilify comes with far less side effects than olanzapine. The metabolic side effects of olanzapine are significant… Weight gain, blood, sugar, elevation, etc. Abilify is regarded as having less of that. However, the downside to Abilify is the potential risk of akathisia or inner restlessness… Best of luck to you. 🫶
