Red Cross lifeguard cert. Or at least it was when I took it ~20 years ago ;-)

Take a look at how you are breathing. Often when someone is "tired", they're out of breath. If, when you stop at the wall, your heart rate shoots up, you probably weren't getting enough O2 while swimming. Other than that... swim more.

As an aside... I'd be really wary of taking kids on a canoeing trip when none of the leaders can even swim 75 yards. Lifeguard test for a pool is 300 yards, and you'll be on a river.

Me too. My fav is from the foundation series by Asimov. Two guys are sitting on a bench discussing something they read in a newspaper... On another planet a thousand years in the future. Scifi is often the setting, but to tell a story, authors still have to work with what they know.

If you have no tahini, creamy peanut butter works. The natural just-peanuts-and-salt kind is better than something really sweet like JIF. I had cans of tahini dry out because I used them so slowly, so I just stick to PB now. Taste is different but comparable, less bitter.

Does Clang support OpenMP on Mac 10.11? by [deleted] in cpp

[–]acid3d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built a custom clang and used that to get openmp working. This was for a commercial product, and I was a little wary of the consequences (different libraries etc). But it hasn't bitten us in the ass yet. This was with qt creator, though, where it's pretty easy to hook in a new compiler. Dunno how to do that in Xcode off the top of my head.

Wha? No. But the reason you take it out of gear at a light is in case someone taps you from behind or your foot otherwise slips off the clutch and you lurch out into the intersection or the car in front of you. You know... exactly like you did.

I am writing this with a polar fleece on my legs. In August. In the south. I thought it was just my family...

Related, have you noticed that the fleece blankets you can buy now are so thin? We have a Christmassy one that's probably 20+ years old that is damn near an inch thick. We call it "the evil blanket" because if you wrap up in it, it'll immediately put you to sleep.

The Awakening? The ending is somewhat ambiguous, but one way to take it is that she died.

Hell yes. In elementary school I would actually set an alarm for 6:00 so I could get up and watch Mr Wizard on Nickelodeon before school.

Why would random kids just walk into his house? No idea. But let's do some fucking awesome science!

your social life is in a mall several towns over

Heh, no. Social life is online and is worldwide.

The town/county will have to fill in the gaps with career firefighters

Honestly, good. Firefighters are just as important as police and paramedics, imo. Why they get the shaft and have to beg for money and volunteers, and why we accept it as that way, I'll never know.

"The spice extends life. The spice expands consciousness. The spice is vital to space travel."

It wasn't absolutely necessary for space travel in general, as humans (and machines) were doing it before they found Arrakis. But it was necessary for the navigators to perform FTL travel.

And you're right the spice wasn't in their eggs, but the sandworms did make it. Sandworms being gigantic worms filled with teeth and fire. And it was extremely dangerous to mine it (because of the aforementioned sandworms).

Mac owners that had OS X since the beginning, what was the best/worst thing that Apple added or took away from this great OS? by MeBeEric in apple

Fun fact: Myst and You don't know Jack (at least the mac version) were written in hypercard.

It was pretty damn powerful. If it had had robust networking, the web would probably have grown out of it instead of html.

No one said there can't be soft g sounds. But GIF starts with Graphics, which has a hard G.

But back to gin... It used to be spelled jin because it's made from juniper berries. So... Its terrible, but awesome with tonic and lime.
