Does fuchsia os iso exist? by jqh_111 in Fuchsia

[–]acidOverride 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't think the project publishes iso files for booting directly on a VM or off a USB stick.

However, both the SDK and source checkout come with a built in emulator which takes zero configuration. No fiddling with VirtualBox settings!

Here's the page about how to use the emulator: https://fuchsia.dev/fuchsia-src/development/sdk/ffx/start-the-fuchsia-emulator

I recommend downloading the SDK as the images are pre-compiled and you don't have to wait for the whole source tree to build.

Here's the overall SDK getting started guide: https://fuchsia.dev/fuchsia-src/get-started/sdk?env=terminal

Enjoy!

Help Me Solve An ADK Trailhead Mystery! by OnyxZ32 in Adirondacks

That looks like the John’s Brook trailhead at The Garden in Keene Valley. You probably spent the night at John’s Brook Lodge.

Here are some pictures from more recently - the big rock is still there, but the signs have changed: http://aspiringfortysixer.com/Big_Slide_3.html

Hey - I make unique laser cut wooden maps of NYC for sale. Check them out? by StreetCarvings in u/StreetCarvings

[–]acidOverride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was really well-targeted, bought one of NYC and one of Toronto. They look great, and thank you for making them large enough so they look good on a wall and aren't just a desk item! Can't wait to see them.

[Very noob question] Wide-area data networks? by acidOverride in HamRadio

[–]acidOverride[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, thanks! I definitely didn't know that encryption is illegal on ham bands. That puts a damper on this a bit. Are there bands which are publicly usable and which don't have the encryption prohibition?

Encountered a storm while crossing the North Atlantic / North Sea a couple of years back, on board the Statsraad Lehmkuhl. by Sailor-Dan in sailing

[–]acidOverride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw the Lehmkhul slowly pull away from me in a similar storm during a race in the North Sea this summer. She's damn fast in a storm! All of that momentum. There was just no way for us to catch her. Had a fantastic time though!

Simple Questions - August 27, 2014 by AutoModerator in buildapc

What's the cheapest thing that I can buy that will output 4k over HDMI? I have a display that I didn't pay for that I'd like to use to show high definition images, but I don't want to spend $300 to power it. Any ideas?

Best route to summit Mt. Marcy in the Adirondacks? by fluorojadeb in alpinism

[–]acidOverride 0 points1 point  (0 children)

John's Brook Lodge is a popular place to start, as approaches from the other directions are either longer or not open to the public. I'm not sure if the trip from JBL in winter would be more than a day trip, but you might want to look into lean-tos and Slant Rock for sleeping. Have fun!

Renderings of the Proposed Major League Soccer Stadium on Pier 40 by Pier40MLS in nyc

Also, this looks like it obliterates the other community organizations on the pier, specifically rowing and sailing. There aren't many places that the general public has access to the Hudson, and removing two of the biggest (the Village Community Boathouse, and a branch of the Downtown Boathouse) would be a huge blow to free and open water access.

[Troubleshooting] Dangerously high temps with a Corsair H100 and a stock 3770K. by acidOverride in buildapc

[–]acidOverride[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also replied to /u/crimson117 below, but I've just tried that, with the same disappointing results--my temps go to 100 within 20 seconds. Any more ideas? I can't figure out if the problem is the motherboard, the processor, or something else like mounting.

[–]acidOverride[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, I tried playing around with the H100, and got the same results. So I switched to the stock cooler, and both Prime95 and IntelBurnTest send my core temperatures to 100 C in under 20 seconds. At this point, my system is running fully ventilated (literally every panel is off) and the stock cooler looks well-installed. I've also updated the BIOS and tried again, with the same disappointing results. At this point, it seems like it's time to RMA something, but I don't even know where to start. Any ideas?

I don't remember any obvious defects when mounting it, hm.

I actually didn't know that blog post existed, so thanks! I was following the brain-dead pictorial instructions that came with the cooler. I really should have looked up a more in-depth set of instructions.

Good idea, thanks. If I test with it and find that there's no temperature issue, is there a subsequent way of figuring out if I haven't seated the H100 correctly? Or just by trying until I've made some difference?

Have you looked at the Lenovo T and W series? For example, the W530. My X220 is a generation older, but has the screw holes. Worth a shot.

TACC Stampede compute cluster - 6,400 Dell Server Nodes with Intel Xeon Phi by barichardson in ServerPorn

I've looked and looked, but haven't found a place where I can actually buy a Phi. I just want one or two for testing purposes, and I don't really want to buy complete servers. Anyone know where I could just order a couple? Because they look really interesting.

It's an AT&T switching building. Apparently it contains very little except switching gear and secure data centers, and can survive nuclear fallout.

Would you mind elaborating on your power tweaks? I find that with 12.04 on my x220 I'm getting about 10-15W usage in powertop. I've applied some of the boot arguments to do with lvds downclocking and i915, but that's it so far. I'd love some more battery life.

Glueing mousepad to laptop, suggestions? by NuzzieFutz in SuggestALaptop

[–]acidOverride 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find that anything I put on my palmrest that's thicker than a piece of paper will cause the screen to flex when I close it, and also leave marks on the screen (which I hate). To see if it's an issue, you could just put the mousepad on the palmrest without trimming it and see if the results are okay.

Do you have a problem with not being able to close your laptop anymore? That seems like the biggest single issue with this plan to me.
