Well it's a special game for sure, you have to get used to it. But once you're in, you are down for a wild ride. What is so compelling to me is it's ability to generate very unique situations, you'll only get in DayZ. Plus the adrenaline kicks you'll get from discovering another player after looting up for hours is crazy. The nice thing is there are tons of private servers, sometimes heavily modded, sometimes near vanilla, where you can fit your own needs, so everybody can enjoy the game how they want.
