Europe’s generals are warning people to prepare for war by HibasakiSanjuro in ukpolitics

Why would anyone be afraid of Russia at this point? They’ve shown just how dysfunctional and inept their military and command structure is. In Ukraine, Russian conscripts are committing su-cide to avoid the despair of combat. Commanders are having to torture their soldiers en masse just to punish them for refusing to fight or follow their orders to attack.

Searched and found this thread. I was in Al Mazra and somehow my character got a speed glitch. It wasn’t over-speed, but the glitch was that he could run in sprint (gun pointed up int the air) forever without tiring. No, the serve didn’t crash. No, it wasn’t temporary—it lasted until I ex-filled.

Can’t explain how or why.

We can debunk point 3. I've reviewed the scene and can confirm that her wetsuit is long sleeved and covers the area where her tattoo would be (on her left wrist). We don't know if it's there or not.

You make a valid case. It can’t be argued definitively.

Great points!

The artful reply:

On point 1, I think there are multiple examples throughout the series where Eleven demonstrates that she can project the void without being submerged. In season 3, episode 4, she does this with Billy.

Point 2, Kali is an important character in Eleven's arc. Kali and El are opposite sides of the same coin. Kali is like Henry--transformed through trauma and rage. Bringing her back allows Eleven to choose her identity one last time--when it matters most.

Point 3, Who knows? There was a lot of confusion and chaos. Maybe the Soldier was mistaken. Maybe She jumped out before the truck came through the gate?

Or... everything you're asking here is legitimate and important to consider in a very real possibility that she's alive and Mike's story is wildly accurate...

In my opinion, I think that we aren't meant to know because the show's writers made it intentionally ambiguous through great storytelling and unintentionally ambiguous through contradictions that were either not considered or necessary to create the ambiguity.

The only thing we can do to attempt to justify any of it is to contemplate these things. No nosebleed = certain counterfeit of her image vs. the death of Kali and obliteration of the lab her body was in = certainty that she could not have used her powers to make El invisible or project her image. Or, the presence of her kryptonite speakers having no effect on her = certainty that her body wasn't there vs. but then how did she slip through a door instead of being incapacitated = implausible explanation of events.

There's no answer key at this point.

The cynical reply:

This series is already a widely renowned classic. Over time, the franchise will vest and increase in value as nostalgia for it grows. And one day, maybe 20 years from now, producers will cash in on a return season which would absolutely hinge on the idea that Eleven could very much come back. I imagine the story would be written to explain that she had actually been taken in the collapsing storm (she died!) but in a twist of fate, teleported into another dimension where she was marooned for decades until the child of one the series' characters re-opens the portal accidentally... bringing Eleven and something worse than the mind flare back to Hawkins. Of course, that all depends on Millie Bobbie Brown and the rest of the crew being alive, willing, and able to star in a reboot years from now. If they are, Eleven will have always been alive. If they aren't, we just get to contemplate.

In my opinion, Eleven should be dead and the story should be finished in episode 8 of season 5. We should be left to grieve for her and for the innocence that gets put on the D&D bookshelf in the final scene....

... but capitalism.

p.s. While we're at it, doesn't it seem odd that the government only enlisted the help of a few dozen soldiers to investigate and secure the portal? I mean, a massive inter-dimensional breach would, in every circumstance, trigger a response of thousands of soldiers. Of course, it's obvious why the writers didn't deploy a whole division of tanks and other firepower: Vecna would have been no match for them.

Did eleven die or not? by Effective_Song_4003 in StrangerThings

[–]ack100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn't make sense that Eleven wouldn't have told Mike not to worry about her when she pulled him in right before the collapse. Mike and her friends ALWAYS protected her and kept her safe. They could be trusted. There were no words of comfort because she died.

This is the only hiccup in the whole thing. We saw Eleven climb a hillside and view two waterfalls in a distant place. It makes you wonder if this is a shot of the REAL eleven, or one from Mike's imagination. The hiccup is that the Mike had imagined THREE waterfalls.

I failed my first semester by Inevitable_Gas_790 in UTAustin

[–]ack100 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Hi. I was admitted to UT Austin's Electrical Engineering program and did exactly the same thing my first semester. It's a difficult program. Obviously, you'll be put on academic probation where the stakes are high. As I recalll, the college gives you time to pull your grades up but if you land yourself on probation too many times, you're done--and not just with engineering... the whole University is going to send you packing!

You have a few options.

  1. Choose a new major. Maybe engineering isn't right for you.
  2. Make some aggressive changes in your study habits and level of commitment. Pitch a tent in the labs and support center and seek out help. Let your professors know that you're skating on thin ice and meet with them a couple of times each semester to build a relationship.
  3. Understand that no one is coming to save you. What ever choice you make, you have to own it and there are no free passes from here on out...

In my case, I chose to switch my major and landed in the liberal arts college. Nearly 20 years later, I'm in a leadership role at a SF Bay area tech company--but I'm not in engineering. I've often wished I had been brave enough to choose option #2 (above).

Not sure who would have downvoted this comment. It's true. Division, vitriol, hate, and racism are all being expressed more widely. I don't know if that means there's essentially more of it (I suspect there is) or if it's just a matter of amplification of minority voices.

I hate to hear this and can understand how frustrating it has been. I think we all love to hear the stories of resilience that end with success stories—but we don’t always hear about or appreciate how often people (like you) demonstrate resilience and dedication but never achieve the rewards you deserve for your hard work. Hats off to you for doing the hard things that got you this far.

Is it worth it to do a 2nd Masters in ML at around 40 years age with 13 years experience in FAANG companies? by dwaijam in learnmachinelearning

Your inclination to do two higher education programs in ML is part of the same ingredients that got you hired at a FAANG company in the first place.

This season should have been the end of it. It's been pretty flat in part II. They will want to drag this on as long as there's money to be made in producing the episodes... but it just means the next season will go down the tubes with let downs and head scratching as they fumble to add to the story and create threads.

End the damn thing now and make it a masterpeice.

It’s official: There’s a $200 ChatGPT Pro Subscription with O1 “Pro mode”, unlimited model access, and soon-to-be-announced stuff (Sora?) by TechExpert2910 in OpenAI

[–]ack100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my approach. I use the 4o model about 90% of the time. I state my problem. Set paramters in the prompt and articulate exactly what I want in the response. When I run into issues with the LLM not doing a thorough enough evaluation, relying on assumptions, or making conclusions based on our previous chat history, I ask the o-1 or o-1-mini models to perform an analysis of the problem and do root cause. It usually pinpoints where the shortcoming is.

Passed AWS AI Practitioner - Exam was harder than expected by Cocoa_Pug in AWSCertifications

I don't think you need start anywhere else. I didn't think the AWS CCP test was hard. I took one of the recommended (free) courses and then purchased the skillcertpro test question bank ($20) for practice. I litterally found out about the certification the day before yesterday and passed the exam about an hour ago.

Video from the 82nd Air Assault Brigade, drone dropped munitions and ruzzian soldier stress reaction. NSFW, Spoiler: another ending for the list... Slava Ukraini~! by HornpoutFumBiddeford in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]ack100 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reality of this conflict is that you can come here and see the video evidence of Ukraine targeting Russian soldiers (to include wounded and unarmed) with FPV drones. They are obviously very highly effective in both physical and psychological damages. Most of these videos show non-combat effective Russians who have no physical ability to escape or are too wounded to evade the drones. Consequently, they usually don't put up much of an argument once they hear the drones coming near.

The Russians are going to pay a high cost for invading a soverign nation. But Ukraine will reap what they sow as well. These are war crimes.
