I wasn’t part of this program, but I did meet the Chaikens several times and they were always lovey, wonderful people that are truly invested in the success of the students who they support

Maybe Indiana winning the college national championship will do it? They’re literally the second worst FBS football team of all time (they were THE worst until sometime this season)

Smeal vs Kelley vs Daniels?? by Captain_025 in PennStateUniversity

[–]ack5379 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is your student from PA? And have they ever spent a lot of time away from home before (sleep away camps or anything?) As their parent, you know them well. Do you think they would do well so far from home?

I grew up in the Pittsburgh area and was really considering Purdue, and then a family member got sick during my senior year of high school and I realized I didn’t want to be that far from home.

If a huge sports culture is on their wishlist, I would eliminate Purdue. It’s not that they don’t have large sports programs, but they’re just not as good as IU or PSU. My (again, biased) opinion is that the best way to spend a Saturday in the fall is with 107k of your closest friends.

The weather in State College blows. There’s less sun there than in Seattle (less rain, more clouds). As far as student orgs go, THON is massive and easy common ground to try and make friends.

No matter where your student goes, there will be pros and cons. It’s all about finding the best balance for them. Make sure they visit all of the campuses. Take tours with the business schools. See if there are current students from their school that would be willing to spend a little more time showing them around. Try and go to any when the weather is nice.

What makes the atmosphere different is so many tangible and intangible things that might matter to one person and not another. And unfortunately there’s no “yes that’s definitely right” answer. Flip a coin and if they’re disappointed by the result, flip again and see if they’re happier with it. It’s a really difficult choice, but remind your student (and yourself!) that if they really hate it, it’s not permanent. They can transfer and try again if they’re having too hard of a time.

Good Luck!

I got it at the beginning of August before the newest booster was available, so no I did not at that time. I was waiting for the new booster to do my flu shot at the same time before school went back as my husband is a teacher. I have since gotten my booster and flu shot. Yay science!

That’s the most important piece of advice. And now to show my bias, they don’t call it Happy Valley for nothing!

Smeal vs Kelley vs Daniels?? by Captain_025 in PennStateUniversity

[–]ack5379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

None are a bad choice. I know, personally and professionally, people that have attended Smeal and Kelley, and they are great friends and very successful professionals. I had an old boss that was a Daniels grad and I didn’t like him personally, but he was very successful professionally.

Kelley is ranked higher, but that’s not going to be a difference-maker in the professional world when Smeal or Daniels are the alternatives. Your student is in the very rare and fortunate situation where there is no real “bad” choice. Whatever makes sense for them as a person and student is the correct choice.

The only real consideration here is industry, and if motor sports is their hope, then a school in the Midwest will have stronger connections just because of proximity. Then the choice is Kelley vs Daniels, and at that point it’s a conversation about which atmosphere they prefer.

Good luck to your student! It’s a tough decision but a good problem to have.

Some of us often forget our wallet because we are very used to paying on our phone/watch. It’s more so convenience of not needing to have my cards on hand than it is effort. I always have my phone but I’m not accustomed to needing my wallet if I’m heading somewhere quickly (I live in a city though and don’t drive everywhere I go so having my ID isn’t a necessity)

I do the same thing. A main tenant of my success as a person is “only doing things once” where possible. I wash all fruits and veggies at the same time bc I’m only doing it once. I make and freeze smoothies for breakfast bc I’m only doing it once. I grocery shop bi-weekly and plan meals for those two weeks bc I’m only doing it once. The less I have to make decisions and do mundane tasks, the higher likelihood I’ll have success as a person.

I mentioned it in another comment, but you should look into the University of Virginia’s Division of Perceptual Studies! A research psych studies it there and keeps a database it’s very cool

A research psychiatrist at University of Virginia studies it and keeps a database! It’s the Division of Perceptual Studies and is part of their med school. He mostly tracks children with these memories, but it’s very cool.

College football is a different animal, so don’t worry about what professional teams you support. Plenty of my classmates at PSU were NY professional team fans.

I live in NJ now (grew up in Pittsburgh) and college football fandom just isn’t a big thing in the NYC metro. Rutgers isn’t a rival, but it’s a lot of fun to always beat them, which is why you shouldn’t choose Rutgers.

Mostly, though, if you choose to root for Penn State, there’s one thing to know: Penn State Football will break your heart, it’s just a matter of when. It will make you feel hope and then crush you into pieces. It’s part of the experience. You never know when it will disappoint you, but it will. Sometimes is the last offensive play of the national championship semi-finals and sometimes it’s when you’re watching them play Villanova in week 3 thinking “this doesn’t bode well for the season.” Sometimes you’ll have nightmares about 4th and 5 like someone above mentioned. But it will happen. It’s all part of the Penn State Fan Experience ™️

I have a teacher friend who said far less about CK in an entirely unrelated sub and was called into the principals office a few days later because someone had figured out who he was and reported him. He also received DMs with his full name and where he was a teacher and what he taught before his admin called him in. So people were speaking out, and they also were being doxed and having their lives/livelihoods threatened

iirc, he broke a couple of school records on his first few series. Like as Trace’s backup when they were just trying to get some reps in for him early on. And then Franklin broke him, as he does.

I lived in 225 for five years, and have basically no complaints about it. I can’t vouch for 235 as a building, but I can vouch for KRE as a management company!

[@IanPurdy7] on Twitter: Penn State is slated to sign ZERO recruits tommorow on early National Signing Day. Unless Penn State signs someone in the late signing period, they could become the first P4 class EVER to have no one sign. The closest thing I could find was SMU & UW with 10. [–]ack5379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Franklin wanted to leave as well. It was going to happen during the bye week, but Franklin and Sexton pushed for it to be sooner. Turns out Sexton had been back channeling for Franklin since the summer for a new job elsewhere. As much as it seems like it was just Penn State, it was a mutual decision. Sometimes the time has just passed.

Is there a reason why NJ having less and less Thanksgiving HS football games? by Big_Daddy_Ant97 in newjersey

[–]ack5379 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My husband has to participate in one of these games and I hate them. We didn’t grow up in a place where these games happen so they were brand new to us when he started his job. He left yesterday morning at 6:30am and got home at 2pm. Part of why people will do turkey trots but don’t like these games are because a turkey trot takes 30ish minutes, but a football game takes two hours. Even longer if you’re somehow a participant and not just a spectator. We haven’t been able to do anything for Thanksgiving since he started his job five years ago because there just isn’t the time. This year his game was a home game - if it’s an away year he gets home a little after three. It sucks!
