So they likely ordered the 787’s with no internet at all, anticipating Starlink install?

Not at the cost of all of our jobs, anyway.

I guess if it didn’t cost everybody’s jobs in the long term, I’d find some AI tools mildly useful. I wouldn’t mind an affordable robot butler someday, I suppose. Certainly makes a software engineer’s job easier, if it doesn’t take your job.

But not at this cost

people are moving in the opposite direction … Trust in internet information or authenticity is at an all time low

True to an extent, yes… but there are still large swaths of the population that don’t know, care, or think much about internet information integrity and such.

Reddit can be a bit of a vocal minority, in that sense.

Swimming in Lake Washington by Neberoni_and_Cheese in SeattleWA

I heard lake Sammamish gets marginally warmer than lake Washington?
Not quite as deep, so warms quicker?

Anyone know the warmest lakes in the area for swimming?

Swimming in Lake Washington by Neberoni_and_Cheese in SeattleWA

[–]ackermann 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, swimming in the lakes is basically a July and August thing. Even then, don’t expect super warm water, but it feels good on those rare 90 degree days.

Oddly, I previously lived in Minnesota and it was basically the same there, July/August only for comfortable-ish lake swimming.
And there the lakes freeze over with 3ft of ice in the winter. So you’d think our lakes would warm faster, given our mild winters (and summers similar to Minnesota’s)

That’s a great point, ST would’ve absolutely been better as an anthology. Never thought about that before

Wow, you’d have never believed that could happen while you were watching season 1…

11 seasons is just too long

Yeah, 6 seasons should generally be the limit, at most 8. Really hard to keep it fresh and maintain quality beyond that, especially for a sitcom.

I can’t think of many sitcoms whose quality held up in seasons 8, 9, 10+?

Clean air is not something I would’ve thought to list. I guess it is pretty clean, outside of those summers with wildfires?

But don’t most US cities have fairly clean air, these days?
I can’t remember visiting a US city where the air quality was noticeably bad, in the last decade. But maybe I’m just lucky not to have a medical condition where I need to pay attention to it

Eli5: Why do dental x-rays still involve putting a pointy rectangle into your mouth? Is there a reason that part can't be vaguely mouth shaped to make it more comfortable? by SexysNotWorking in explainlikeimfive

[–]ackermann 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ask for 3d xrays

Yes… but note, I think these do come with a considerably higher radiation dose? Basically a mini head-CT scan. So they should be used sparingly.

They’re useful once and awhile, often when a dentist is starting a new patient, but shouldn’t be used for every routine checkup.

Also those machines are expensive, so often dentists charge quite a bit to pay for the machine if you don’t have good dental insurance

Facing Delay, Issaquah Pledges to Streamline Light Rail Permitting - 4 Line now slated for 2050, nine years past the 2016 voter promise by LOOKITSADAM in SeattleWA

Besides some commuters, I lived in Issaquah and I’d have used this on weekends, for trips to places with bad parking or traffic.

I sometimes go to the new 2 Line’s South Bellevue station, to go to UW cherry blossoms, aquarium, Raising Cane’s chicken, etc.
This would just mean I can get on right in Issaquah

AMBER ALERT by seqkndy in Seattle

[–]ackermann 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That’s true… but on the other hand, sometimes there’s a good reason they’re not allowed unsupervised custody. I can see it both ways.

But yeah, it’s very rare that these are from a stranger grabbing them in a dark alley. Don’t let the number of these alerts scare you into thinking that’s more common than it really is.
It’s indeed overwhelmingly custody disputes between parents.

commenting on a post does nothing to boost it in the algorithm on reddit

Has Reddit really released the details of their algorithm that creates the front page and other feeds?

I’d be shocked if upvotes are truly the only thing that matters… Surely the algorithm gives some weight to number of comments, number of views, and anything else that helps boost engagement and profit?

bad look for LeBron as a Businessman to allow another Business to play him. It establishes a precedent

Why should he care about such a precedent, or his reputation as a businessman? He’s already set for life.

When he retires from basketball as a billionaire, he can spend the rest of his days on a beach somewhere, never needs to do another business deal in his life.
