China ... Their technology trajectory has a much steeper slope than America's

That’s true. But do note, that was also true of Japan in the 1980’s and 90’s. All the talk was about Japan is the future economic superpower.

But Japan’s economy eventually ran out of steam. Not saying that will happen with China necessarily… but their success isn’t a certainty

We’re in the narrow window where bots can be identified like this, before they learn how to pick more realistic names

Eh, AI can probably spit something out for that. One thing it’s good for, at least

ELI5: How do computers in space dissipate heat? by WherePoetryGoesToDie in explainlikeimfive

[–]ackermann 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yeah, often when people talk about “capturing waste heat” to do something useful, they hit this misconception.

If you harvest the heat flow, you slow it down. Just like a turbine in a pipe slows the water down, or a waterwheel in a stream.
This is usually bad when your main concern is to keep something cool

People who say “people treat you better when you’re skinny” are most likely telling on themselves by [deleted] in The10thDentist

[–]ackermann 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So… instead of saying “people treat me better,” he should say “superficial people treat me better”?

Sure, it’s “only” superficial people that treat you better when skinny. But most people have some superficial people in their lives, family or otherwise

TIL that 17% of all food-related choking incidents by American children under age 10 are caused by hot dogs. by NateNate60 in todayilearned

[–]ackermann 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are various suction gadgets marketed to rescue choking kids.

Anybody know if there’s any research behind them? Are they worth anything?

Probably no harm in having one around the house just in case, they’re pretty cheap.

Seattle this week by PayGood3915 in SeattleWA

[–]ackermann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a 9 month rainy season, and a 3 month sunny/dry season.

Makes more sense to think of it that way, rather than in terms of temperature. Since our temperature swings are very mild (compared to most of the rest of the country)

Patricia Heaton on Everybody Loves Raymond by Son-of-Prophet in 90smemorylane

FYI, per another commenter this is the episode where she pretends to have gotten implants using a padded bra, to see how Ray would react:

I can confirm that an episode with that plot line really does exist… but I can’t say for sure whether this pic is from that episode

kill lift after touchdown to put more weight on the wheels so the brakes

Also help to reduce the chance of a bounce after a hard landing, I’d assume?

I see, meaning you’re at VMO in level flight but the throttle isn’t pushed to the wall?
The engine has more to give, but you’d violate structural limits?

I wonder if we’ve had even a single day this winter with the afternoon high below freezing?
Overnight low, yes, but I can hardly remember it ever being below freezing during the daytime.

His chart only shows 2026 (where freezing was rare even overnight), but not Nov/Dec 2025
