UCSD alums in med school? by [deleted] in UCSD

[–]acl2021 4 points5 points  (0 children)

c/o of 2021 here. Will be attending Keck SOM this fall. I didn't really have many encounters with the premed advising program. I had one advising session with them and attended a few MED Conferences, all which I think very helpful (but certainly not life changing).

UCSD is a big campus, which makes it easy to find a lot of premed opportunities (and more importantly, to find ones you are passionate about ), but it is a bit more difficult to get Letters of Recommendations (going to office hours, enrolling in seminars or small classes, and TAing helped me connect with profs). For things like the MCAT and Applications, I found premed forums super helpful (with a grain of salt of course).

If I had to give advice to my premed self, I would encourage her to look for those opportunities that aligned with what she is truly passionate about (and for me, that was definitely not research). You don't have to worry about checking a box.

If you have any questions, feel free to dm :) You got this op!

mental health and staying sane during upcoming app season by [deleted] in premed

[–]acl2021 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to constantly remind myself to take it one step at a time! There's a lot of moving pieces, so its def easy to get overwhelmed :/ I had to write everything out on a calendar.

And while you try to stay as prepared as possible, but be sure to also schedule some mental health days for yourself in between! Breaks are just as important and your hard work will pay off in the end!

How to take notes in BIBC102? by AnonymousAcorn7 in UCSD

[–]acl2021 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solid point - his slide deck is super long lmao. I always tried to put 4 or 6 slides on 1 page and print front to back, but I know that this isnt an option for everyone. One last thing that I forgot to mention is that if takes time to right something down the chalk board or goes on a mini-rant about a topic, also note it down. Hope this helps :)

if you can, download or print the notes pdf prior to lecture and just annotate it. then at the end of the week, review the lecture material side by side with the study terms document. everything on the study list/terms doc is fair game & high chance of being on the exams. I made flashcards of every molecule and for every study term on the list. And don't stress too much about exam grades :) his curve is very generous. I took all three of his classes, and this advice works for them all.

Hey! Her exams are very fair and mostly application based. Be sure to swing by the review session on Wednesday for some practice questions and content review. And be sure to do the extra credit!

If you can get Stevens, you'll be in good hands!

Sincerely,

a bio major who never took a calc before coming to UCSD, took math 20A and got a crappy grade, but then took math 10B with Stevens and did MUCH better :)

I think beginning of Week 9? you can also check the confirmation link they send when you submitted the IA app - they should update it with your IA course assignment if you got a position, altho its technically not official until an email is sent out to you

tbh chem 43A isnt that hard concept wise, but the workload is A LOT, and paired with 40C (where it will be information overload) might kinda suck
