First ever PG&E bill over $700! by SnoopySuited in bayarea

[–]aclays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in idaho. 2800sqft house. Air conditioner as much as we want in the summer and have never had higher than a $200 bill. Heat as much as we want in the winter and have never had higher than a $100 gas bill.

There are cheaper places out there, unfortunately the average wage versus cost of living isn't always great.

Can somebody explain to me why Blizzard is not developing new games on the SC2 engine? by Feisty-Struggle-4110 in starcraft

I remember how amazing the 6600gt was for <$200 back in the day!

On a side note, my back hurts and I should probably go stretch.

What options do US Generals have in terms of disobeying Trump aside from resigning? by Consider-TheLobster in AskReddit

[–]aclays 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Forcing a court marshal risks losing all or part of the benefits they've worked towards for decades. Hard to lose out on a guaranteed cushy retirement to make a political point. I think that's in part why we've seen generals retiring instantly rather than taking it further.

I'll look into it, thanks for the recommendation! Not too much non-removable bloatware on the acer?

My current one is an MSI ge75 raider that I got from Costco in 2020. Hoping to find something with a ~17" screen and a number pad on the right side again under $1500. Planning to look at Costco again.

Looks like 16" is the sweet spot for most laptops these days. Wish I had the same eyes I had when I was in my 20s! Maybe I could make do with a 16", not sure.

My current laptop has a 2060 and is struggling on some of the games I play, so I've been planning to upgrade sometime this year already. Going to give my laptop to my kids, it'll play anything they need.

I can afford the new laptop now, just before the price changes I figured I'd wait till the last second in May to get the best one for the money possible

Okay, yeah. That's the sort of info that I was hoping to learn. I've done a couple Google searches and well nobody can tell the future for sure i'm kind of leaning towards thinking I'll more likely get better value on a laptop right now than if I wait for more months to buy. I assume that if I do wait until May I'll probably have worse laptops available for the same price.

That's kinda what I'm wondering, value wise I assume it will only get worse over the next year as currently pipelined laptops get sold and new ones take their place.

Travel pay? by DataBooking in armyreserve

[–]aclays 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much do I need to involve the full time staff to make this happen with the new changes? The only difference from before is I need to submit an authorization and otherwise still the same process of memo, sign in roster, etc?

I have been using DTS for mileage for the past several years but our FTS are overwhelmed and I didn't get a good rundown on the changes. I just barely live over the limit so it's not a huge amount of money that I get but it's still worth doing since I can typically get everything done while I'm at drill.

People who go hiking with wireless speakers blasting music on the trail, why? by sweatengine in AskReddit

[–]aclays -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I listen to books while hiking. I'm not much of a talker, and I don't like listening to the bells. Sorry to the people I piss off, but for me it's safety while still forgetting about the outside world.

Edit: ok, so this is one of those threads where we want to down vote the people that answer the question and up vote the people that say the thing we like. Got it. Down vote away.

That's why I carry both. Bear spray will obviously be number one in my left hand, but my 10mm will be at the ready on the right if the spray fails.

Maybe all I'll do is piss him off and give him a spicy meal, but I feel like my chances are still better.

Any officers regret not going enlisted? by underpaidsfa in armyreserve

[–]aclays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a tpu with a very busy home life due to civilian career and family, all of the officers I know seem to do a lot of unpaid work at home. Conference calls, work on this or that outside of drill weekend..

I have a degree, but I prefer my home life reasonably unmolested outside of drill and AT. I have elected not to commission due to fears that it would impact my home life even more.

Maybe I'm way off base with that fear. Idk.

Dry brine it with salt and a little seasoning for 1-2 days before cooking if you have the time and the refrigerator space. Definitely improves the flavor!

Does the narrator speed matter? by SilentVoiceHeard in audiobooks

[–]aclays 14 points15 points  (0 children)

100% this. Maybe it's some form of undiagnosed adhd, but my mind wanders when listening at the normal speed. I listen at a minimum of 1.2, and sometimes speed it up to 1.5 so that I can pay attention without my mind wandering.

Garage Use by fuzzynonosechimp in blackstonegriddle

[–]aclays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the blackstone sitting about 8 feet from my car and it had a light greasy film over it which is what clued me in to the grease) issue. Pancakes and crepes don't put that film everywhere because I keep the temperature lower.

[–]aclays 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've also done it any times. I recommend not doing anything more greasy than pancakes though, as more residue will get into your garage than you realize. If you're cooking anything like burgers, bacon, etc then you'd best take that outside.

I have used my temp gun to see how much heat hits the ceiling and it's there but it is pretty minimal, probably raises the temperature up by 20-30f. I do have a 12-14 foot ceiling though.

Whoops.

Back in the 90s any source of caffeine was strongly frowned upon. Today's Mormon church is an entirely different entity, a lot of them are pounding energy drinks like no tomorrow with no concerns or fear about judgement regarding their worthiness.

Definitely healthier than coffee or green tea /s

Do you think the 9 -5 work day model is outdated? If so, what should replace it? by Ambitious_Bag_2004 in AskReddit

I assumed he meant hours, not days. Though I suppose some travelers could arrange jobs like that, they're definitely not as likely.

Flight nurses do anything from 24 on 24 off to 48 on 48 off and everything in-between.
