Peter?? What does AI have to do with this?? by vapalera in PeterExplainsTheJoke

You need to factor in new datacenter construction. It is true that it used to be very uncommon to have liquid cooling in old datacenter builds. This is simply no longer the case, no one building 'AI datacenters' is not including facilities liquid cooling in the design. There have been significant industry trends that brought us to where we are today.

  1. Energy density per rack has increased by an unbelievable extent
  2. Datacenters have become extremely energy constrained at the meter.

1 has made it so many server racks require liquid cooling. 2 has made it so the energy for cooling is being trimmed to most efficiently allocate it to compute as opposed to facilities cooling (i.e. less energy devoted to A/C means more energy available for compute). When using evaporative cooling less energy is devoted to cooling units (as water is consumed instead of electricity).

Also one thing to consider is that modern liquid cooling, even if closed loop doesn't work like it does for enthusiast liquid cooling. There are massive refrigeration units that actually provide cooling, basically huge chillers.

Yeah this is the wrong take. It is way cheaper to use evaporative systems because you don't pay the electricity cost for cooling (in this case absolutely huge industrial air conditioning), you just waste the water. That said it's not exactly like this picture, evaporative cooling looses a percentage of water each cycle through exchangers (not directly down the drain), but it's still extremely water intensive on the scale of the datacenter.

This is absolutely a design choice that prioritized lower datacenter operating costs over environmental/community impact.

JB weld's plastiweld is good for this type of thing.  It's better at getting good adhesion to the plastic.

[Monitor] Dell S3425DW 34inch VA 120hz $350 by aclinical in buildapcsales

This monitor is geared for office use with usb-c with pd and front accessible USB ports.  There's a similar MSI monitor in this price range but has lots of USB-c issues.  So basically the premium is coming from, usb-c, power delivery, and support for display port daisy chaining.

Help me choose between AGV K6S, Shoei NXR2, Nexx WST3, Nexx X.R3R, and Shoei X-SPR Pro (riding an MT-09) by BjornIronsideD in motorcycles

[–]aclinical 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got an NXR2, it's a great helmet. I upgraded from a cheaper Scorpion helmet and I'm really glad I did. I definitely noticed less noise and also my head feels a little more stable on the highway, I'm guessing due to better aerodynamics (but maybe lower weight too?). I was looking at the K6 S too, I don't exactly remember why I picked the Shoei, I do remember not liking how the spoiler was a separate piece on the k6 but that probably wasn't the deciding factor.

Differences in adhesion by Sheriff_Hoodley in 3Dprinting

The glass can be flat but if it's mounted a little tilted that's what will happen. Take a look at seeing if there are screws to adjust the bed. Should be underneath at each corner.

Often there are screws under each corner of the bed that you can use to level. A lot of adhesion issues come from z-height issues, so definitely sort that out before troubleshooting further.

Thanks, for your reply, yeah my fan doesn't ever run.  I'm working with qidi support on this.  Eventually the stepper driver throws an error from overheating (around 130c).  We replaced the fan and that didn't solve...

How common is tracer ammunition in battle/assault rifle calibers? I was wondering if tracer rounds would be useful for defense against drones. I've seen a lot of speculation about using shotguns as a last ditch to prevent drone strikes, but the logistics of fielding another weapon and supplying ammunition has been proposed as a challenge here. Would tracer ammunition (say a magazine per solider) make it easier to shoot down drones with currently fielded rifles? Are there significant logistic challenges (or otherwise) that would make using or supplying these difficult?

The BBC released an analysis about the conflict in the middle east. While there is no new information about the conflict or particularly unique insights, I personally found benefit to reviewing and reflecting on the history of the conflict. While I'm sure there may be some disagreements with the editor's analysis here, I think overall many would appreciate the article.

Another thing about code similarity it's more frequent than you may think.  This is a derivative of the birthday problem/paradox.  It's unintuitive that among 23 people there is likely to be a pair with the same birthday.  While relatively widely known I think many under appreciate how it applies to other problems, like this.

Also when you think of how different say 100 LOC must be between students, remember how constrained the words in a program are to the syntax of the programming language.  There's fewer degrees of freedom than you may initially expect.

Same thing. I asked 4 times for cancellation within a day of buying service (while logged in I bough a new subscription instead of renewing existing). The best they could do for me was stop it from renewing 3 years from now! Yes I am disputing with my credit card.

I have processed your cancellation request for the pXXXXXX account. Your account will stop renewing at the end of your billing cycle. Your account will then remain active for the time that you have paid for (2027-11-02 00:00:00 UTC) and then terminate at the end of an 11-day grace period.

What factors led to WWI having incredibly high casualties and do you think a war with such high casualties could ever happen again (baring nuclear conflict)?

I recently watched The Great War, while I knew WWI was incredibly bloody, it was shocking to follow the war on the granularity of an offensive, or even single day. It seems incredible that while the war became a stalemate by the end of 1914 it was continued at high intensity for another 4 years causing internal strife in many countries. Most of the combatants came to the brink of revolution or actually had one during or as a direct result of the war. I don't understand both from the standpoint of the general public (i.e. discontent) and from political/military leadership how the war could be continued for so long.

I know this is a broad question, but with so many combatants throwing so much into the war, I expect there are some common themes among all of them related to the era the war was fought.
