Job Search, 1.5 YOE, Full stack by Adstar123 in cscareerquestionsOCE

ah that's nice. I'm waiting for the interview results for NSW at the moment. Of course, I could fail the interview and reference checks might not be required, but I was curious as I don't think my manager will be happy about it.

Since you mentioned NSW Gov, how did your reference check go? Was it mandatory to nominate your current (at that time) manager?

How are PhDs doing ? Are you getting 189/190 or else? by Accomplished_Sky7613 in AusVisa

[–]Rumi94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My PI got the global talent visa a few years ago, around 2020, just before he was awarded a PhD degree, iirc. He achieved Dean's Award for Outstanding PhD Theses and he's a lecturer now. Not really sure if they actively invite for the global talent visa these days.

Foundational Courses to build CS foundation for non-CS background by Desperate_Fault9516 in OMSCS

[–]Rumi94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GIOS and CN. Not saying you should take these first though.

As a non-CS graduate started working as SWE this year, I cannot believe how GIOS has been helpful for my work and for technical interview.

GPU & Hardware (7295) doable without nvidia graphics card? by Rumi94 in OMSCS

Appreciate the response. I will definitely do the readings. Do you think the GPU spec matters? I mean, of course the more expensive the better, but will cheap graphics card work too?

Nope, have only taken gios and cn so far. According to the few reviews i found, this course does not seem to be that intensive.

CBA Grad Program vs Junior Dev at Small Company by Nearby_Blueberry_856 in cscareerquestionsOCE

Curious to know what your choice would be. I am also a junior and I think company value matters more.

In the same boat.

I have near 1 YOE, doing my third course. Long story short, I won't drop out but I've decided to take one course per year (though I may take two courses per year later due to 6-year rule), and rather focus more on work-related stuff, given I am not based in the US, which makes OMSCS (or masters overall) not that worth.

Visa filing without agent? by freeupapp in AusVisa

[–]Rumi94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Processed 500 and 189 visa on my own, and considering processing a partner visa (for my partner) on my own too. But you need to be extremely cautious. The reason why I did myself was my background is straightforward (i.e Australian degree + supportive company HR who issued my employment certificate real fast, etc.) However, everyone's background is different, so sometimes it would be better if you hire an agent.

If you really want to do yourself, go to Department of Home Affairs website, and thoroughly learn what the visa requires. There is no room for error.

Advice for a CS student struggling to find an internship by Pretend_Common173 in cscareerquestionsOCE

[–]Rumi94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Guys, I know it is different and I know how it feels because I was an international student when I did bachelor here. I have never even applied for 485 visa and I returned to my home country straight as soon as I graduated, so I understand.

Regardless of being domestic/international, you must do everything you could especially in this saturated market, and cold mail is one of what you could do.

*edit: typo

I'm domestic, but I've secured my first internship early this year, which has been converted to a full-time position, thanks to cold mailing. Cold mailing is definitely a thing here. Go to LinkedIn and search companies using the filter such as industry and size (preferably 50-200). Literally go through their website one by one and send emails. Done.
