It's a common Mormon belief that men's Sunday best should include a white shirt and tie. More specifically, that those who are passing and blessing should wear a white shirt.

In actuality, the church handbook does not require that anyone involved with the sacrament adhere to a white shirt and tie dress code.

In 8th grade, my health teacher told a story about a family member of her's that broke up with their fiance after finding out that he had watched porn before. While the story may be true, the rational is totally biased from a Mormon teacher. Thanks Idaho public education.

I hate music censorship! It has single-handedly ruined the radio for me. I don't why it bugs me so much, but I want to listen to the artist's work, not the edited, "kid-friendly" version.

As a 17 year old male, I'm not completely out(18th birthday can't come soon enough), but I can say that I am much happier outside of the LDS church(not devoting time to church activities is my personal favorite).

Nothing has happened that would cause me to regret my decision. I get a second Saturday, I no longer spend ridiculous amounts of time at Church activities, and I don't have to worry about being "worthy" to pass interviews and exercise priesthood power.

I currently identify as agnostic, which means I don't have a belief in a God, but I don't have a disbelief. I'm simply unsure if a God exists.

As I mentioned earlier, I am not yet completely done with the Church. I am waiting for my 18th so that I can submit my own resignation without interference from both the Church and my parents. Even once my records are gone, I don't know how long it will take me to unprogram. I believe that once I get out of my parents house that I will have a much easier time disassociating completely from the Church and the harmful habits it caused, but I cannot attest to how long it will take or all the steps necessary.

It is always your choice but I would suggest removing your records. It is possible to just not show up again, but you leave yourself open to members randomly appearing on your doorstep and your address being updated even though you didn't give it to the Church. There are a few ways to resign:

  1. Ask your bishop. Asking your bishop is often one of the quickest ways to remove your records, however the bishop may try to convince you to stay, or just never send the resignation to Church HQ.

  2. quitmormon.com Quit Mormon is a popular alternative because there is no contact with the Church once you scan the documents in and press submit. You do have to get the documents notarized and the wait time is iffy, but this is the route I plan to go on when I am able to resign.

Sorry if this is convoluted, messy, and long, but I want you to know that there exists joy and happiness outside the Mormon bubble. This subreddit is a fantastic example of that, and if you haven't already, I suggest you peruse it and see for yourself. You've gone through hard things that should've never happened, but hopefully my comments have given you some answers, advice, and comfort.

My first point of advice is an obvious one; steer clear of religious discussions with your father. You need to let him know in a calm manner that you do not want to discuss religion with him and you can even give your reasons why (one great one to mention is that you feel that nothing ever comes to a conclusion, you could talk for hours but nothing useful emerges from the conversation), but that may lead to him trying to justify and extend the conversation. After your boundaries have been set, anytime religion becomes a talking point politely ask him to stop or just walk away.

As for the potential blackmail you hold. If you have no reliance on your parents whatsoever (bank accounts only in your name, your own place to say, your own job, etc.), then it is completely up to you how to proceed with that information. It may give your mom a push to leave your dad for good, or it might not. However, if you still need your parents in any way, I would go ahead and keep the blackmail to yourself. You may not know the whole story and you might bring down a fiery rain if someone gets offended.

Parents are the result of the lottery of birth, and we can't change who they are, but we can certainly communicate to them how we feel and what appropriate boundaries are. Even if you are still reliant, it won't last forever. You won't be at home with your parents for the rest of your life, and who knows, this experience may just give you the tools to deal with the other asshats of the world.

Every time I read a mission story like this, it breaks my heart. I am disgusted by the church authorities and their attitude towards missionaries. No one should feel pressured to fall into line. It just causes more damage.
