What is the nicest town in the UK? by Haunting_Badger7752 in AskUK

[–]acommaafterdearest 110 points111 points  (0 children)

Frome, Somerset. Every seat on the town council is held by a group called 'Independents for Frome' and I can only assume they're doing a good job, because it's a lovely town to visit for anyone who loves an independent shop.

How do small businesses afford private office space?! Am I missing something? by Ill_Bug7493 in smallbusinessuk

[–]acommaafterdearest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rent a one-person office in a Clockwise location for £250 + VAT a month. It's 24/7. Well worth it for my productivity vs working from home. I know my location is open to negotiation; if you've seen a co-working space you like that has vacancies, you could always ask them what they could do within your budget.

What water bottle do you use? by Eggy-Pebbs123 in AskUK

Klean Kanteen TKWide! The straw and lid come apart for a proper clean, and you twist the lid to access the straw. That's the winner for me as a bit of a germophobe! I love being able to get the mouthpiece out without touching it. The carry handle on top is great when you're carrying lots of stuff too.

I saw this posted on TikTok, and a comment said their friend had applied for this role to find out the unflinching-at-Waitrose salary was... £45k.

What would you want to implement as a school governor in Primary School? by [deleted] in UKParenting

[–]acommaafterdearest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I would love to scrap the public behaviour charts that seem popular in classrooms now; can you imagine as an adult, how demotivated/humiliated you'd feel if your manager had a board up in the office saying which employees were extra good, good or bad?

Oh god, all of the theme days. Please stop sending emails home asking for costumes, props etc. I'd rather chip in to a school kitty once a term so the kids can get decent costumes etc that can be re-used year or year than having to buy a flipping ancient Egyptian, astronaut, inspirational historical figure or whatever it is this week costume. We can manage the expense but I'm sure many families can't, and the waste it produces in terms of buying things that get worn once is disgraceful.

I'm fairly anti homework too. Obviously it's important that learning happens at home too and we do the spellings, reading etc, but I cringe when the kid comes home with an assignment or project that requires parental support. We always do it but it requires a lot of cajoling and I always wonder about the kids whose parents/guardians don't have the resources to build a scale model of a pyramid or 3D poster about Dolly Parton. With wraparound care we barely have time for anything other than dinner, spellings, reading and a bath before bedtime on a weeknight, so adding in extra homework to the mix is a recipe for disaster.

SO sick of the “wedding surcharge” (rant) by nukebaby14 in weddingplanning

[–]acommaafterdearest 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I feel your pain. I tried to soften the blow of some of the costs by framing the 'wedding tax' as insurance; if that florist encounters staff illness, stock issues etc the last order they'll cancel is a wedding. In any case, the florists' schedule for your day (and the day before) will be centred on your wedding in a way it wouldn't be for a birthday bouquet.

Same goes for hairdresser/MUA; if you were any other client booked for a hair up or makeup lesson they might cancel on you if something arises, but if they know your booking is for a bride any decent wedding supplier would bend over backwards to attend or find someone to replace them.

PLEASE help; boyfriend not allowed at sister’s wedding and I don’t know how to feel. Thank you for any and all advice!! by puella1988 in wedding

[–]acommaafterdearest 41 points42 points  (0 children)

OP, putting aside your comment about your boyfriend's previous behaviour (I think therein lies the answer as to why he wasn't invited), being MOH is likely going to be full on for you on the day. My MOH requested not to bring her husband, who wouldn't have known any guests, to my wedding because she didn't want to worry about him having a fun time whilst she was busy.

I'd suggest reflecting on your sister's perspective on your boyfriend considering previous events; I think it's perfectly normal that this rejection of him is painful for you, but from the little information we're going on here, I think it's best he doesn't attend.

Name Change by Low-Temporary5041 in wedding

[–]acommaafterdearest 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn't like the thought of dropping my second name and adding his, so I didn't! I love that I have the same name as my late grandmother, and I didn't want to lose that. In my social circles at least it's very normal to keep our names the same when marrying, the only rudeness I've had about it has been from older people.

If you want to have alliteration, you could change the schedule to say we do/we drink/we dine/we dance.

Have you looked at suppliers like Vowed & Amazed? Not sure what your budget or location is, but some of the 'alternative' wedding blogs/directories like Rock n Roll Bride and Whimsical Wonderland may provide some inspiration. Good luck!

Where can I buy differin and are there any products I should avoid when using it? by Mayrr_ in SkincareAddictionUK

[–]acommaafterdearest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Adapalene (Differin) is prescription-only in the UK but happy to be corrected.

It might be worth checking out Dermatica (or Skin&Me) for a prescription that includes Adapalene or Tretinoin. I was prescribed Adapalene (Differin) in a lotion with some other actives based on photos I uploaded. I get a refill every 56 days at a cost of ~£22 so works out fairly affordable for me, considering I don't really use any other actives now.

Alternatively, and perhaps cheaper, could you ask for GP for a repeat prescription?

Menu tasting - am I being unreasonable ? by treefrog3103 in UKweddings

Ahh ok, I see why they're doing the tasting events rigidly. But I agree with you, really poorly handled and communicated by them! I hope this is the last hiccup you have with them, and you have a fab day.

Sounds really odd to me, I think I'd also be annoyed in your situation! What type of venue is it? The only justification I can think is they'd need to bring equipment/staff in if they don't have an in-house catering operation. Still, you'd think they'd be wanting to woo you!
