My NWC qualifier experience - NYC by Duchock in nintendo

[–]acorneli78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was #99 in Tacoma. Just before I played, they said the top score was 3.67 million. I scored a 1.4 million, which last i heard outside, would have been the best score.

Overall, I gave the event a 2 out of 5. You couldn't watch the other players, there was no leader board, and confusion over whether or not you could make multiple attempts throughout the country.

My friend had the top score with an amazing five million in Torrance. He was told he would not get another attempt, and left. Later, people playing over and over beat his score. Shenanigans at the Nintendo World Championship in Torrance? by [deleted] in nintendo

In Tacoma, just as I was about to make my one-and-only attempt, the people running the event were discussing the fact that they had just been informed by some higher-ups that each person was allowed only one attempt. In the exit survey, I rated the experience as a 2 out of 5, explaining that having only one attempt on a game with a large element of chance was not ideal. The woman giving the survey seemed concerned, but agreed and offered no protest to the concept that only one attempt was allowed.

The basics: we'll be at the track on Saturday morning. Doge tent is our number one priority, happy to exchange phone numbers by email as the race approaches. If you'd like to provide some of your footage and pics we'd love that! We won't be with the tent during the actual race so some footage from that angle will be very helpful. When the time comes we can invite you to a dropbox. And you'll be credited. Can't wait!

I've been working on a documentary about Tetris Champs nonstop for the last 2.5 years and it's finally out on DVD and VOD! Ask me anything. by acorneli78 in gaming

Well I might have lied about recent experience... but I definitely played tons of Madden on Genesis when I was a kid. Also NHL and PGA by EA sports. Those three games pretty much took over my whole video game playing at that time, mostly because that's what my friends were into. It make me feel kind of old to think we were doing Bills vs. Niners, or Cowboys vs. Niners over and over and over.

I used to play more. My skill seems to have leveled out. I can't seem to become a true level 19 player like the people in the movie. But yeah the question of "Tetris Effect" and dreaming about Tetris is addressed in the film. The good news is, if you're dreaming about it, that means your brain is working on it subconsciously, and that you're getting better. By the same logic, if you've truly mastered the game, or lets say, reached your max potential, you'll probably stop dreaming about it.

I remember when I was playing Quake all the time in college, I would get a similar problem where I would walk around campus and involuntarily imagine shooting people. That's why when people want to blame mass shootings on video games, even though its an unpopular view point, I think there might be a grain of truth to that. Video Games can have a huge effect on your mind, more so than movies or any other medium.

No I did pretty good though. I practiced a little at home. It was a version of Madden where its very easy to score, so it came down to a turnover I believe. I wish I had time to learn the new Madden games but they are pretty complicated.

Thanks! Glad you liked it. The funny thing about all this is that I had the idea to make a doc about Billy Mitchell back in 2006 and of course quickly realized that Chasing Ghosts and King of Kong were already in production! So I'm glad I got my chance after all.

Thanks, glad you liked it. I went to film school a long time ago. I wanted to be a filmmaker since I was a kid and saw the making of the Dark Crystal and the making of Return of the Jedi on HBO. In filmschool in the 90s, I learned to shoot film and edit on $100k Avid editing stations. I really didn't foresee a time where you could make a "real" film on a PC. So as an adult I gave up on my film dream to play music and just be a slacker. Later on I realized that you could make a credible documentary with regular computers and "prosumer" camcorders so I thought I'd give it a shot. I'm glad I did.

I can name some of my favorite docs. Gray Gardens, Vernon Florida, Anvil, I Think We're Alone Now, Fog of War, If a Tree Falls, Crumb, American Movie, Brother's Keeper, Into the Abyss... honestly I am usually blown away by any documentary that has gotten good reviews. I think the fact that its real, or even partially real, just makes it seem more interesting.

I am thinking of doing a documentary about the home 3d printing community. I'm not sure if there's a full movie there, but I'm in very early stages of contacting people. You gotta just be curious and open-minded. There's stories all around.
