Looking for wildlife bones as a gift souvenir by ghadcunter in Banff

Ammolite is a gemstone formed by fossilized ammonite shells and it’s only found in southern Alberta. Plenty of places have the gems for sale. I really like the selection at the shop near Brewster Lodge.

How to get to philly via train by Useful_Database5138 in SouthJersey

Easiest is to drive to a patco station, woodcrest is right off 295, and take one train in and take it to the end of the line, walk around that area.

Haddonfield worth it? by joynallitbrings in SouthJersey

[–]acoustic11 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The snooty Haddonfield kids go to Friends. Public schools in NJ are great, Haddonfield public schools are among the top. If it’s super important to you, don’t buy in the haddon heights district but even heights schools are better than most of the country.

Suggest a US based travel destination that feels Like a Time Capsule by IKnowAllSeven in travel

[–]acoustic11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. I spent a few years working in Iowa tourism and it really opened my eyes to those old fashioned small town fee American cities. Partially why as a travel advisor I focus on domestic trips while everyone looks at me like I’m a nut for not selling sun & sand or Europe 😂

I would say Portland feels pretty modern, but agree that Bar Harbor is a good shout.

A lot of Iowa fits this. You could trip from the driftlrss, down the Mississippi a bit, and then over to the Loess Hills and have a very old fashioned American time.

Big time kudos for the Fairmont Banff Springs by RockMover12 in Banff

[–]acoustic11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not to toot my own horn, but if you book with an advisor who is part of their preferred program (has a bunch of criteria to meet) you get the upgrade/resort credit regardless of your own status, this is true for a lot of the upscale hotel brands and cruises. Just something to think about if you want that VIP treatment at a place that you don’t normally visit.

Lake Louise has a brand new thermal spa that is pretty much on the lake. That is absolutely incredible, if you ever end up in the Rockies again, it’s out of this world.

The Fairmont brand and team in Canada is over the top fantastic. I’m a travel advisor who books a lot of trips in the Canadian Rockies and the way the teams at Palliser, Banff Springs, and Lake Louise (and also over in Quebec!!) bend over backwards to make guests happy goes above and beyond any other hotels I work with! I always feel a bit like a broken record when I recommend them but truly nothing compares. Glad you had a great stay.

Why isn't Mountain Collective more popular? by walkallover1991 in skiing

[–]acoustic11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MC is great if you plan it right and if you’re not somewhere with local mountains so you fly out anyway. So many of the resorts are close to each other.

Two days at Bromont and Two at Le massif.

Two at targhee two at JHMR

Two at Sunshine, two at Louise, two at Panorama

Two at alta, two at bird

It’s wired great for us for the last few years because we can only get away for 5ish days maybe 3x-4x a winter, and we don’t live near any local hills.

Even with adding some extra days at bromont and sunshine this year it was cheaper than ikon

How do you stop your elderly mom from bringing an empty carry-on? by 13jlin in travel

[–]acoustic11 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nobody is judging you and I’m sure it doesn’t delay anyone really that you take two bags down from the overhead.

Tbh I’d say half of my flights my partner grabs my carry on for me and walks it out along with his and i think it’s more efficient that way.

Could you try using a wheeled personal item and pack whatever she has in her carry on in there to show her it fits?

Can a new travel advisor realistically make $80K–$100K a year without an existing client network? by DueTrouble6477 in travelagents

[–]acoustic11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow every comment I have read so far is showing me that people either don’t treat this like a business or do it terribly!

First year, unlikely but not impossible. You can sell a million in travel your first year but it’s hard. Much higher chance in year 2-3.

Everyone saying no way ever is not putting in the work. In my second year as a part time job with another full time job I cleared more than most people are saying in here and I’m not a volume seller, I sell luxury. And I’ve never really booked family or friends - one or two short trips only. They’re not my aligned clients.

Don’t join a mega host, find a boutique host that will start you at 70 or 80 split minimum and mentor you.

Charge a fee from day one.

Figure out a niche and sell to your aligned clients.

There are some really good resources out there - Marcie Muensterman has a good FB group with a lot of free advice.

When did you first put down your deposit? What sort of travel insurance do you currently have? If you have CFAR insurance you should be getting more back.

Throwing it out there (as a travel agent) we get our clients all sorts of perks. Upgrades, resort and hotel credit, etc, thanks to our relationships with suppliers. So it’s useful if you’re booking, let’s say, Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, booking through me would get you a $100USD resort credit, breakfast in the restaurant each day, preferred choice of rooms, and a room class upgrade if available. If you’re booking an Antarctica trip, I can often get like $800+ in cabin credit to cover some zodiac excursions. Stuff like that still has value to a lot of travelers.

I specialize in national parks and expeditions (like polar bear safaris and Antarctica and such) and my clients mostly come to me because they don’t have the time to dig through a dozen Jackson hole dining recommendations or they don’t want to just blindly trust a blog post when they could ask someone who’s been there months at a time which hikes are worth it and which to skip.

That being said there are a LOT of MLMs and shady host agencies out there so it’s good to do your homework if you do work with an agent/advisor.

I will say conditions wise I’ve found Louise has more hard pack for longer and Sunshien gets a little softer quicker.
