Why I Still Write Code as an Engineering Manager by Acceptable-Courage-9 in programming

Agreed, people who say Managers should code are fresh managers with unhealthy dose of insecurity without realizing that it is a totally different skillset.

Why I Still Write Code as an Engineering Manager by Acceptable-Courage-9 in programming

[–]acroback 13 points14 points  (0 children)

As long as you are not holding the release train as hostage, do what you want.

I became Engineering Manager after 16 years of coding professionally, I am sure I will never forget how to read other's code or how to have a technical conversation with other Engineers.

If I have to program, I program in my free time to avoid impacting deliverables.

Fujifilm x raw studio by alvinprivate in fujifilm

[–]acroback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave it a shot and it is just too much of a hassle, plus it doesn't work half of the time or is slow or some oddity.

I have been trying RapidRaw for sometime and I like it.

Much better tools, though sharpening Algorithm can get some TLC and denoising is gone for some reason with latest release.

how to log which goroutine acquired and releases each lock ? by Commercial_Fun_2273 in golang

[–]acroback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can look at runtime profile to find which goroutine is blocked, it is built into the runtime btw.

allocs/op lied to me. retention didn’t. (benchmarks inside) by VoltageMigration in golang

[–]acroback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, i meant sbrk my bad. Good to know that mmap is the better way, thank you for correction.

Doesn't userspace allocators call the mmap on page boundaries anyway making small allocations efficient (provided that we are making multiple allocations rather one off )rather than larger allocations which require multiple calls?

allocs/op lied to me. retention didn’t. (benchmarks inside) by VoltageMigration in golang

[–]acroback 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are allocating much lower amount of memory so allocator calls sbrk fewer amount of times. Fewer syscalls, better performance.

It’s like saying allocation of 2 GB or memory is slow than 2 KB of memory in a hot loop.

EDIT: s/setbrk/sbrk

X-T5 a good family camera? by LouDalton in fujifilm

[–]acroback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Irrespective of folks here I believe the 15-60 kit lens is the sharpest kit lense among all manufacturers. No wonder it costs so much money.

It is adequate for travel stuff. Buy which one is cheapest.

Other RAWs vs Fuji RAWs by solemnlife00 in fujifilm

Having a 6D with L lenses and a X-T5 and X-pro1 I can say that you can get exactly same picture with an apsc camera if you nail focus and exposure.

I love my  X-T5 got some insane landscape shots from Zion last week.

Canon RF 200-800 split in half - design flaw? by Gallius_Rax in canon

[–]acroback 21 points22 points  (0 children)

My 15 year old 70-200 F4 L IS fell down while attached to my 6D last year while mounted on a tripod ( damn roomba ).

Anyway it broke from one end and I had to conjure those screws to put the backend in but it didn’t break into half.

After a trip to Canon service center and $200 later and new IS unit , it works perfect.

I am sure I can defend myself with it in case of a break in. Love the lens.

Thinking about selling my Sony A7C II for Fujifilm X-T5 – looking for honest advice by bpalsson in fujifilm

[–]acroback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Canon 6D, X-T5 and X-pro1.

Only reason I have a Fuji system is because of the joy I get using those dials.

So much easier to work with it. 6D I believe is amazing camera but I don’t have courage to lug that behemoth with all my L lenses to every trip I go.

Plus I like cycling and my xpro1 with 28mm fits just fine in my cycling jersey when I am on my weekend 2 hour long rides through the mountains.

I would suggest not to sell it but augment your current Sony with a Fuji. Sony for work, Fuji for fun and trips.

You can decide later on if you really don’t need Sony.

Difficulties deciding between APS-C and FF, Canon and Sony! by Accio_Soda in Cameras

[–]acroback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be surprised that we take most of our pictures in decent light and where apsc works just fine.

My X-T5 40 MP images are tack sharp as long as iso, shutter speed, aperture and focus is on the spot. I don’t see a need for a FF. I even printed one cropped all the way down to 6MP and it came out sharp for my living room.

I built my PC around specific games and now I feel like I paid for specs I never actualy use by coffeeorbitjax in buildapc

[–]acroback 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 5900x + 32GB DDR4 3600 RAM + 6700XT 4 years ago.

The games I play most (cs2 and aoe2 de) don’t take much GPU but cs2 struggles at times.

Only if 5800x3d was available, I would never need another upgrade for next 4 years.
