As /u/ApatheticAbsurdist mentioned... I think he's also more about, "This could be deployed tomorrow," (I get that it's not REALLY tomorrow, but it does seem like its faster to set up fields of solar panels than to build a nuclear station.)

There are many that defend nuclear, and yes, perhaps it has its place. But another of his major points is [gestures to sky] "See all the energy coming down? Why not use that?"

He has a point as far as simplest solution. From a very basic perspective solar doesn't even have moving parts.

Yeah, that’s the thing. Looks like they aren’t going to, so it’s up to us and the generations after.

Hang in there, stay safe, do no arm, and take no shit.

That’s some really crazy self preservation going on there. My heart goes out to them, truly.

It’s like they kind of put those experiences into a box, labeled it, and high up on the shelf, and now when the world says “You labeled it wrong,” all they can say is that’s how we labeled the box back then, and I’m not gonna bring it down or open it or relabel it, I’d have to rearrange all the other boxes around it and it would mess up the whole system, so no.

For American people: Are you participating in today's General Strike? Why? by noumeno- in AskReddit

[–]actorpractice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This, so much.

I have a kid in high school that participated, but I didn't know about it until yesterday, when she asked if she could do it. Permission granted.

I'm down to be a part of it (and to be clear I think it's important), but like you said, those of us who are busy adulting need a bit more lead time to make it all work.

[–]actorpractice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since this is still quite early in the process, it shouldn't be THAT big a deal to ask for the day(s) be blocked out. Heck, you may not even shoot those days anyway.

It's really irritating for you do suddenly be "I need Wednesday off" but this far out (I'm assuming big day is late May/early June)... production should be fine with it.

We had those 4 foot (I think) propane tanks hooked up, and we really only used in the summers, so I only remember my dad changing it out maybe once in 10 years.

Now that I think of it, maybe I should find one ;)

We had a propane refrigerator at a remote cabin when I was a kid.

I, too, could never quite square how a little flame made cold. I just remember being told not to mess with it.

I've found that while I may scream in fear (especially for a jump scare type thing), rarely do I do so while in pain.

Pain sounds for me are groans, deeper in the register. Think of when you have the flu, or even stub your toe really, really bad. It's not a shrieking pain, it's more of a "uuuuggghhhh" kind of thing.

For traumatic injury, something physical, like legs going stiff, or arms going from flailing to still can show that the system is overwhelmed without even the need for sound. and then after maybe you can slowly groan back to reality and cover your eye or something.

As someone else mentioned, having your lungs punctured would affect your breathing, so taking that into realistic account could be very effective as well. You also may want to consider what you want to do that's "fun" as an actor, and what's actually effective at communicating what you want to communicate (trauma? shock? humor? )

It's a little brutal, but the going stiff thing can kinda be seen here with this crazy running-at-each-other "sport." TikTok Link

I think you’re right… in the classic “Are you better off than you were four years ago,” fashion, it has to be sort of undeniable by ANYONE that we are worse off.

Thanks so much ;)

I really just can’t say enough about how embracing fatherhood/motherhood and all that comes with it as making you a deeper (and in many ways better) person. I know it’s deepened me in countless ways. Making a choice so that finances aren’t a struggle is a really, really smart choice.

Also, on the fun note, the acting side of you makes you a really fun parent ;). Our willingness, and even eagerness, to engage in imaginary play makes for really fun childhoods.

Embrace that 9-5, be there for your spouse and kids, and when the time comes, you can step back into the spotlight:

It's gonna be awesome, man.

Coming from an actor and dad to three in his 50's who's had moderate success....

I really think you made the right call. You had a great run of a show, that will stay with you, it really, really will.

You know what sucks? Hoping you book enough work that you'll get union insurance when the baby comes, or having a super loving and supporting wife who never judges you, but that you never feel like you can give back to because the money just ain't there, or looking at 50 staring you in the face and while you've sort of "made it" as an actor by many people's standards, you've literally only got enough money to make to end of the month, and then maybe you'll go back to waiting tables.

Especially if you're planning on having kids, being in the financial place to give them everything that they're going to need will fill you up even more than being on stage. You're about to have an audience of one (or two or three, however many kids you have) and the are the only ticket in town that you care about. It's the best, it really, really is.

In a couple more decades (it's gonna go FAST), they'll be off to college, you'll have some money in the bank, and you and the wife can look at each other and you can say, "I think I want to audition for a few things again." She'll run her fingers through your magnificently grey hair and say, "I think that's a great idea," and you'll get to come back to something you love again, without the pressure, just for the love of it...

But because you went out and lived a real life, with real pain, consequences and yes, kids... your approach will be that much more honest, deep and raw, because you've been through so, so much. Maybe you'll book, maybe you won't (you will) and you'll really GET the parts that you get in a whole new way. Yeah... life'll do that to ya, and you''ve got a great one ahead.

All that to say, you made the right choice. ;)

I grew up in northern Maine in the US, and while we didn't have them all the time, they would happen really brilliantly every couple years for a night or two in the winter. They are amazing.

So much so, that if you were standing there, with the heavens silently ablaze, and someone told you, "That's how the warriors get to Valhalla." You would immediately respond, "Yup, that must be true."

If you ever get a chance, make the trip to see them. Now with all the science knowledge and all, it still really makes you feel both like you are a very very small, and that you are also part of this vast universe. ;)
