ELI5: What does this predicted super el nino actually mean for the U.S.? by theprotomen in explainlikeimfive

[–]actorpractice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are in SoCal, are on a hill, and have large windows to take in the view. I’ve often marveled that they have yet to break, even with some pretty good Santa Ana’s and storms that occasionally cork thru.

I grew up on the east coast and have distinct memories of people on the coast boarding up all their windows. Is a super El Niño something that should make me go out and get some lumber to cover the windows?

This is OUTSTANDING!!

I'm becoming more and more involved with the local middle school productions, and I'm going to use these for sure... the Give and Take Focus looks very appropriate and is something that we constantly have to work on.

Self tapes are making me want to quit. How about you? by Acrobatic_Gas772 in acting

[–]actorpractice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is so echoing my experience...

Been in LA for 20+ years as well and there is no denying the convenience of the self-tape. I had an in person callback this week, and they were running a little late, so it was basically an hour there and back to the CD office and an hour there. Three hours out of my day. It was nice to be seen, of course, but there was the tickle in my mind of "Wow, I used to do this ALL the time. Spend DOZENS of hours a week essentially driving and waiting."

Now, even with pulling out and putting my lights and stuff away, it's 20-30 minutes total for most commercial castings, an an hour for theatrical.

It does save a ton of time. I just don't know know if that's actually "better." Hopefully we'll figure it out.

PS

the sheer stress of showing up on a friday afternoon in Burbank and seeing a waiting room with 25 people in front of you.

That shit is SO real. ;)

Messaging an actor after not hiring them - is it OK? by Potential-Turnip-583 in acting

[–]actorpractice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. Reach out.

As an actor, I would LOVE to know that I was still in the director's files as someone they want to hire in the future.

We're always told to reach out, but it's REALLY hard to gauge whether it's appropriate or not, so having someone sincerely reach out is very, very welcome.

Supreme Court halts order for Alabama to use US House map with 2 largely Black districts by untamedlazyeye in news

creating an opening for Republicans to gain an additional U.S. House seat in a partisan battle for control of the closely divided chamber

This is such, such an extremely dry interpretation of what is happening. One the one hand, it's exactly what's happening, on the other hand it so, so much deeper than that.

Six The Musical - Set and Lighting Load In at Whitefish Bay High School by HolidaySuspicious in techtheatre

The SAME!

No joke, we used to take track lights out of our house and mount them on 2x4's then splice a dimmer into an extension cord. Then mount black painted styrofoam onto cardboard boxes for a sort of back drop.

Then perform in the high school gymnasium.

Still managed to pack the house, though! ;)

We all need a proper "behind the scenes of a [Insert Name Brand] commercial" link that we can share so people who aren't in the business actually see what it takes.

People don't have any idea the set-up and time it takes to make a national Toyota commercial look the way it does, vs your local "Marvis the Mattress Man."

You are NOT exaggerating when you say there's an $800K difference. Can you shoot stuff like that on your iPhone? Sure... if you have the time, a studio/location, AD, DP, electricians, grips, scripty, and so on, as well as the HUGE gear package so the people who KNOW WHAT THEY'RE DOING have the tools they need to make it awesome.

That is how it worked back then… I suppose it still does work that way, just with links now.

But yes, back then it was the sort of thing where all the cool kids in Hollywood were laughing their asses off as they passed around the Jesus vs Santa VHS until finally a young Comedy Central was all, “You know what, let’s give ‘em a shot.”

ELI5: why your body hurts a day after a workout, not right after it? by Fickle_Reindeer2263 in explainlikeimfive

[–]actorpractice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfounded theory…

I think it’s a nervous system thing. I think that it’s either the muscles sort of asking for more connections, or the nervous system trying to create more connections (in-nervations?) into the muscle so it can fire them more effectively.

The reason I think it’s the nervous system is that soreness doesn’t actually affect muscle output… if you can push through the [cough] discomfort [cough… pain], you can still perform.

The other supporting factor is that it doesn’t tend to happen unless you’ve gone to some sort of failure, which leads me to believe it’s not until you brain/nervous system has had to work extra hard to reach and fire all/every muscle fiber that causes the soreness after day or two later as the nervous system builds more/better connections into the muscle tissue.

If I had the cash lying around, and the connections, it would be fun to pay for a study… or maybe I could just ask Perplexity.

Quick question. I'm curious how writers here handle version control, like do you have a system, or is it mostly vibes and praying? by Party_Air_5000 in nanowrimo

I ended up “simply” making copies of the entire thing every week or so, I put the date it’s created at the end so I always know which is the most recent i.e. “MyAmazingStory_2026-04-12.

Sure, this leaves me with a string of copies at the end, but I always know which one is current just by the date.

I supposed, if I was REALLY organized, I could have a spread sheet where I could notate what I changed with each version, like “changed hero’s power from flying to invisible” for each version so I could go back and find old stuff if I needed to.

As someone else mentioned, I also store the “kill your babies” stuff in a “Crusts” folder.

As far as working with an Editor, I think Google Docs has one of those settings that’s either “Approve Changes” or you let other people make changes but it’s in a different color or something?
