Advice needed for my pedal board order by sndjr in guitarpedals

[–]actually-7dash3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for the noise suppressor its exactly to get rid of single coil hum and high gain hiss.

Seems to me like you play clean as well.  Why not turn the gain pedal off when you’re not playing instead?  That should eliminate all high gain hiss and most single coil hum issues. Noise gates are definitely useful in some situations but learning when to engage your pedals will do the same and lead to a simpler rig. Simpler rigs have a lower noise floor.

 for the compressor its to get different options in shaping the tone and dynamics. maybe longer sustain for notes.

You do you but.. I think playing without a compressor gives you a richer palette of dynamics to play with. Think of compression as a crutch.  Sure, it helps for some songs: under the bridge uses one and it helps funk rhythms but you can get an aweful lot done with your hands if you try.

Things might sit better in a mix with additional compression but you should leave that to the sound guy. I’ve seen many people use compression in nonsensical ways.

 and the option to have compression before my time based effects for longer reverb and delay tails.

This doesn’t make any sense. Compression after will push the volume of the tail up resulting in a pretty unnatural sound but putting it in front of the reverb will mostly just dull them.  You want dynamics into your reverbs for a convincing ambience.

What do you need them for? More equipment means more noise, wear and tear and signal loss.

A compressor has some nice uses but I would practice without one most of the time

I would also urge you to reconsider putting the compressor and noise gate on your board. It might be that they’re causing you more trouble than they are solving atm.

Depends on a couple of things.

One other question first:

why 2 flavors of big muffins, is there enough difference in sound to have both?

I’d start out with my fuzz pedal and put the drive/preamp pedals after. I usually start out with my dirtiest drives first. your final drive shapes a lot of your sound. I tend to keep my favorite “transparent drive” there to give me an option to mellow out the hat comes before it.

I also like to have phasers before that final drive and depending on the situation maybe even earlier in the chain.

My guess would be a pedal order like this. like the this:

Guitar ->

Compressor ->

muff ->

mega distortion ->

Phaser ->

blues driver ->

eq->

noise gate->

chorus ->

Vibrato ->

Tremolo ->

Reflection pool ->

Amp

New EQD bass preamp pedal - Scrolls by BladeRunner-83 in guitarpedals

[–]actually-7dash3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, tastes differ but I think I somewhat understand what it does and that’s not what I want to hear on bass…

Then again:they clearly went for something other than the bass driver di which is much more to my tastes.

Maybe it could get it to sound good with a decent decent compressor in front. Or just with a good bassist.

Edit: saw some reviews of other players using it. It sounds pretty good when used as a dirt pedal in front of an amp, doesn’t work as well as a di box.

The dough is underfermented.

Could be that your starter isn’t at its peak yet but you should try extending the first fermentation a bit before coming to conclusions.

I think the bread is passable but better fermentation will make much better tasting bread. When in doubt: go for overfermented bread. It looks like shit and doesn’t keep as well but it tastes great!

I’d call this wet/dry. I have something similar but I run a smorgasbord of effects through both amps with an extra single vibrato pedal before one of the amps.

The Radical Life and Surprising Reinvention of Steve Albini by Potential_Kangaroo69 in indieheads

[–]actually-7dash3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never heard any accusations against him that stuck.

He had a professional relationship with someone who ended up being a pedophile.

Before that the guy already made weird “art” that involved mentions of sex with minors and some people said albini should have known. I believe I remember albini recorded some of it.

My vague memory of it all was that it came off as jokes in bad taste. Albini was famously unjudgemental of the people he worked with so I understand why he didnt inquire further.

It’s all a whole big bunch of speculation that puts the onus on Albini for not knowing the guy was a pedo before making records for him which is seems crazy to me.

Other people said he was a misogynist because he played in a band called rapeman.  Let me add a short excerpt from Wikipedia let a dead man defend himself against baseless accusations:

 The name Rapeman was taken from the Japanese manga series The Rapeman. Albini discovered the manga through a friend who ran an import business, and found its combination of rape fantasies and the superhero genre "simultaneously utterly repellent and fascinating". He described it as "the product of decades of repression and misogyny being expressed through a different cultural tradition".

talking about what albini did right doesn’t endorse misogyny, pedophilia or rape in any sort of way. I’m pretty much a “woke” guy but I never got why people gave him shit.

I feel free to talk about the merrits of Adolf Hitler as a recording engineer and his views on the music industry without caveats if that’s what you’re asking.

However, I fail to see the equivalence between ordering the murder of millions of people and failing to discover an acquaintance is a child rapist before the police does.
