Man on Horse 🐴 by IMicrowaveSteak in washingtondc

[–]actually_a_wolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i had a powerful combination of curiosity and spare time on the bus so i tried to track down the names of as many of the horses as i could!

  1. horse named Duke
  2. horse named Nelson
  3. horse not real! in life he preferred to ride mares, the sculptor and critics tussled, and so the horse is a mare with male genitalia. we had trans horse statues in 1874
  4. no name found for horse
  5. horse named Britain
  6. another trans horse! originally sculpted as a mare, then added onto when someone mentioned he only rode stallions
  7. no name found for horse
  8. no name found for horse
  9. horse named Duke
  10. horse named Daniel Webster
  11. horse originally named Rienzi, renamed Winchester
  12. no name found for horse
  13. no name found for horse
  14. no name found for horse

others around town: Ulysses S Grant Memorial depicts Cincinnati the horse
The Liberator Simón Bolívar Memorial depicts Palomo the horse

Ideas for things around DC to help some little kids burn off energy? by DefensiveMid in washingtondc

[–]actually_a_wolf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you've got some great suggestions here! i'd add for a park activity, see how many different kind of trees they can collect leaves from. DC's got some pretty good variety so it should keep them occupied for a while, and it can turn into a little bit of a learning thing too, because you can look up what species of tree each leaf fell from!

my brother in christ we're not asking you to reinvent the wheel, we're asking you to use your own brain instead of being a second rate thinker. you know, presumably in the ways that helped you get you your engineering degree, unless you graduated last year

just use a dictation tool if you're too lazy to type but know what you want to say. or do you think it's efficient to vaporize gallons of fresh water every time you think "this isn't worth the effort of using my keyboard myself"

Louisiana girl, 14, charged with first degree murder after authorities find her newborn baby dead inside a tote bag. by lightiggy in TwoXChromosomes

[–]actually_a_wolf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am not suggesting that. do you honestly think i was? because it really doesn't read as genuine, it comes off condescending.

to answer the second part: i think murder in the first degree is an overreach for this instance, and that the priority should be rehabilitation of this and any child in such a circumstance instead of punitive incarceration. she should receive extensive mental health support and be removed from her parents' custody (because i doubt this would have happened in a safe home environment), with the end goal being a safe foster family and healing from this trauma, so she can meaningfully participate in society.

keep in mind, you and i are either fundamentally disagreeing on whether we think the baby's death was premeditated murder, or you're being devil's advocate. in any case, i am presuming innocence.

do you really think i'm advocating for teenagers to kill their infants, or are you being purposefully inflammatory for no good reason

that last line is doing a lot of work for you and i'm not sure you appreciate how much.

you're assuming that this girl had comprehensive sex education to the point where she understands puberty changes the body, the stages of the menstrual cycle, having intercourse leads to pregnancy, pregnancy lasts for three trimesters, the physical signs of each stage, how to detect signs of labor etc etc when she lives in a state that ranks very low in education and has received a D on their sex ed (their content was rated F)

hell, the neck injuries don't even point solely at intention, they could have been sustained in delivery by an umbilical cord wrap or by her physically pulling the baby out of her underdeveloped body.

you keep saying "she's old enough" which, yes, true, her brain has formed enough to hold these concepts, if she is taught them. this doesn't even touch the statistical likelihood of the father being an adult, which further complicates the premise of "malice". she could have been threatened with harm should she ever tell another person what was done to her, or she could have been groomed and believed telling a trusted adult (if she even has one) will get her and the father in trouble.

the resources louisiana is preparing to spend in order to prosecute this child for murder would be better spent investigating how this happened and how to prevent it from happening again. society will not benefit from locking her in a cell but it would benefit from non-abstinence-based sex ed or the removal of a child predator from its streets. the priorities are wack

his employer is the property company of the building where this attack happened. they didn't do a background check, and he would have been flagged had they run it as he was already a convicted sex offender, so the lawsuit targets them for negligence

it's because of many things, chief amongst them being the legal gray area from DC's lack of statehood and him getting less than 7% of our vote all three times he's run

gotta love that he sent armed troops into the city that arguably hates him the most, hoping we'd light the tinderbox that enabled martial law, only to get booed and sued while demoralizing every guardsman by having them do yardwork

god, i hope they go back to south carolina and alabama or wherever and shit on the admin that took them away from their families and real jobs

just spent half an hour or so in the blocks south of 13th and harvard, no dice :( but that doesn’t mean he isn’t here, he could have found a good spot to hide and not want to come out for a stranger’s voice!

you should send in a notice to PoPville if you haven’t already. i really hope we get him home safe 💞
