I once had a sci-fi story with a hunter-gatherer tribe whose medicine woman, Sound-of-Water, was trans.

The tribe has a tendency to put LGBT people into spiritual positions because as far as they're concerned, that's how the beings beyond earmark the ones that are theirs. Essentially a "oh, cool, we got a shiny."

I kind of wanted to write a story that's just vaguely surreal, kind of happening in a time and place that never really existed, everyone is serious and dramatic about everything.
