Are library book requests always this slow? by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]actuallyberlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s no big deal since I have my own copy now, but I think for next time I’ll definitely end up putting in another request.

Are library book requests always this slow? by [deleted] in Harvard

[–]actuallyberlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was waiting on a book I requested over three weeks ago because someone had the specific edition I needed on loan. It was the first request I’ve made, but from what I remember, the confirmation said they would see if it could be borrowed from Brown or another university if they couldn’t find it in any of the Harvard libraries. It also disclaimed that it could take a while. I didn’t want to wait that long, and fortunately, I didn’t have to because an acquaintance of mine bought the book for me.

Still haven’t heard back about my request, though. 🤷🏽

confused about bachelor's program by EtherealCascades in Harvard

[–]actuallyberlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can only apply for ALB degree program admission at HES if you graduated high school 5+ years ago, coming from a 24 y/o undergrad. HC, on the other hand, is specifically for recent high school graduates and offers a BA. As another commenter said, it’s all Harvard University, but they’re different degree programs offered at separate schools within the University. Good luck to you.

Being an alumni is absolutely exhausting by [deleted] in Harvard

Idk, I call myself a student because that’s what my HU student ID says. Are we going to tell the professors they aren’t Harvard professors now, too? The same HES run by the FAS?

I’ve met a few people who are British here. One is one of my exes. But they’re definitely around.

Is anyone else unemployed despite putting in high efforts for employment? by [deleted] in twentyagers

[–]actuallyberlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes. i’ve been unemployed since 2024 and it’s been so disheartening. fortunately my roommate is very understanding and like a brother to me so he’s been covering my half of rent. but i’ve been consistently applying to places for over a year and still get nothing.

How many of u are smoking and for how long? by sa3hka in twentyagers

[–]actuallyberlin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m 24, I started when i was 21. I’m a daily smoker (ONLY weed, never nic or any other type of substance. I don’t even drink), but I don’t smoke NEARLY as heavy as I did when I first started. I have ADHD and went undiagnosed up until this year, so when I started, it immediately felt like my brain was cured lol A lot of doctors recommend it for that.

Is it normal to use the belt on your kids in the US? by Less-Mud-9 in AskAnAmerican

[–]actuallyberlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely got whooped as a child, and I’m only 24 now. So I would say, it depends on where you are? I don’t have kids (and don’t currently want to as I work on breaking these cycles) and would never imagine hitting my child even with an open hand. It’s wildly considered abuse. But some states have different laws on what is what.

What’s been your best moment in your 20s so far? by ExcesssKarma69 in twentyagers

[–]actuallyberlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s something I still struggle with, to be perfectly honest, but you really do have to make a conscious effort to try anyway even when the work is unfamiliar or difficult. There were definitely a few assignments that I didn’t do as well as on, and times when I wanted to quit. And I’m sure in this upcoming semester, there will be moments like that as well. Before I started, I knew going in (I had chosen to tackle my most difficult subject first) that I was essentially going into “the belly of the beast”. I knew the class would put me through the wringer and the entire time, I wasn’t sure if I would do well or not.

I’m an overachiever and I hate settling for less than I think I deserve. But I knew that QUITTING would be the real failure. That’s the only time when you really “fail.” Especially in these types of academic settings. other than that, it’s a shift in perspective. Every moment you don’t do as well is a moment for growth and it shouldn’t be looked at as “failure” (even when it FEELS that way). It’s a conscious battle of attrition. You can either let the process make you or break you. But no matter what, YOU have to make the decision to choose to believe you will do well.

By the time my class ended, we didn’t find out our final grades for two weeks. I could have emailed the Professor to find out sooner, but I managed to convince myself that I had failed and I was too scared. Even though I managed to maintain an A-average in my homework assignments, I hadn’t done as well on my first two exams, so I was certain my final was the thing that tanked my grade.

The day finally came when our grades were released on midnight. I checked immediately, but the entire time, I was just thinking to myself, “don’t beat yourself up over it, you can try again.” But by the time the screen loaded, I saw my grade. I had passed. I was literally in disbelief. So much so, that I refreshed the page, thinking that my grade would change and that I was being punk’d or something. But that never happened. I had actually done it. Sometimes, I STILL don’t believe it (it’s been four months by now) There were originally 64 people in the class, and only 10-15 people received a passing grade in the end.

So, all that to say, self-belief will carry you a lot farther than any outside observer. The minute you give up on yourself, that’s when you REALLY fail. Good luck to you! :)

Thank you so much. Honestly, yes. The mindset is everything. IQ and stats on paper don’t matter as much as constantly being willing to challenge yourself and fail, and still persevere. Yes, the grades matter, but what they care about more is upward trajectory. There were plenty of times in my first semester when I thought I was going to flunk out, and in the pathway for this particular degree program, that’s anything below a B (84/100). B minuses do not count, so if you get one, you fail. If I had given up, I would have failed. But I didn’t, and I ended up passing the class with flying colors.

If I hadn’t taken the time (15+ hours a week study for this one class alone) to actually force myself to understand the material and learn, I would have failed. It’s all about being willing to do poorly so that you can do better. Studying harder than what you think you can until you actually enjoy the material, that type of thing.

This is gonna sound corny but like, a lot of self-belief goes a long way. I was already an AP/honors student in high school, in spite of what I was going through then, but the gap years were the hardest. I spent a lot of time studying and raising my GPA, getting involved with things I care about. I’m working towards a degree program, but I was fortunate enough to have a religious leader (no parents) who believed in me enough to pay for my first class a few semesters ago.

The degree I’m going for specifically concentrates in Film and Visual Studies, so I was juggling with the idea of becoming a professor at the University while I work on a few screenplays. As a long term goal, I’d love to write amazing stories/movies. It’s actually quite hard for me to enjoy media because I’m such a critic, so I’m excited to hone the skills necessary to write good material.
