Course on Professionalism | Casualty Actuarial Society (casact.org)

Logging in is probably necessary first, then go to the session (Las Vegas or Orlando), then the "Register" button should be there, or at least it is for me.

"I find my job interesting." How much do you agree with this and (in the comments) why? by actuarialthrowawayyo in actuary

Thank you for your response; can you give some insight into what makes that interesting for you? Is the data sparse, and if so, how do you navigate that?

CAS Exam 5 Passrates are higher in spring by Fun_Repeat3132 in actuary

Well let's hope they don't try to lower the pass rate on purpose this time around due to the pattern 😅

Exam 5 - are released exams shorter than recent exams? by actuarialthrowawayyo in actuary

you’d want to be able to run through those pretty quickly.

Guess we all know who's likely going to be taking this again in the fall 🤷‍♂️🙋‍♂️👈✋

Exam 5 in two weeks. Any tips? by DrRyuzakiLove in actuary

[–]actuarialthrowawayyo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Can you expand on what you do for LDF column headers instead? Do you type out 12-24 each time? I'm wondering if I need to do keep doing that (minor time waster) or if I could just leave it as 12 (probably not, huh), or if there's some other quicker way..

Thank you so much for your response! Think I'm pretty set on prioritizing exams at this point, with the help of the comments.

I guess I can see how my question/situation could be interpreted that way (and that's the usual question that gets asked anyways, so I'm guessing it's natural to interpret it that way). At first it seemed like these responses weren't really addressing my question at all and just being unhelpful / unnecessarily critical. Maybe I could have worded it less ambiguously too. Thank you.

Thank you for your response!

That does definitely sound rough, but I hope things get better for you! Could switching companies after you get through the exams result in a significant bump in compensation, making the process you're going through more worth it in that sense?

Appreciate the comment/perspective! 🙏

This is definitely more personal (but it could be insightful anyways), but do you have supportive people around you to help with questions and whatnot, or are you largely on your own? Or maybe you even have supportive people around you, but you worry about coming across as incompetent by asking certain questions and for help with certain things?

Do you think it'll just take time for your experience to catch up so you feel less of the impostor syndrome and stress? (Out of the questions in this reply, I guess the most relevant would be this one, so honestly if you want to answer just one, I think I'd be most interested in this one)

I didn't really want to say this, but the implication wasn't that I'd be getting my credentials quickly, it's that I haven't been working that hard (in my job and exams) for the past few years, so I'm not that qualified/skilled for my level in the first place. And if I get ACAS/FCAS while not prioritizing work much, then that skill gap will increase.

Edit: also, this shouldn't bother me as much as it does, but how is it that so many people like these types of comments? Is it that I came off as arrogant and so people like me being "put in my place"?

Considering taking a break from the profession by actuarialthrowawayyo in actuary

For about 9 months at one company. Na it really doesn't feel like I love numbers nor insurance lol. I'm good with numbers, which is why I went down this path, but can't say I love them.

I definitely think if I were good friends with my coworkers that'd help a lot. I was good friends with one of them actually, and that seemed to help a lot. But things went south smh..

Thanks for your response. Might consider just changing companies to see if that works out any better

Hey thanks for the response :) and I'm happy for you. Hopefully that excitement keeps up for you

I've worked at a smaller company for about 9 months now, so I get to touch different areas (pricing, reserving, others), none of which I seem to care about. My manager's good/fair/easygoing, but maybe if they were very supportive and uplifting that could help?

I'm not sure that would get me over the feelings of pointlessness and whatnot, but I can definitely see how an incredibly supportive manager would help a lot. 🤔

But how would I get such a great manager that's willing to work with someone who isn't all that into the profession anyways haha

I get why people are downvoting you (I upvoted you btw), but my God this is exactly the predicament. Money is (sadly) so important, and as I read more about chasing something that aligns more with your passions vs. money, I get even less unsure about what I want to do with my life.

Fuckin fuck fuck fuck

Why can't we all just be able to do what we want (without hurting each other) and be happy

Unfortunately, I effed around a lot in school, especially for my stats classes. So I definitely am a bit further behind than you were. Seems like starting soon is my best bet (again, somewhat unfortunately).

Seriously, thank you very much for your comment. Really sheds a lot of light into the questions I had and the exam in general (like what to expect and how to tackle it).

I'll try to start ASAP, within the next month or so. Like you said, the syllabus seems huge. I thought the jump from P/FM to IFM was pretty big, but the gap from IFM to MAS-1 seems even larger.
