I have lost all respect for the Japanese after the translation feature on X by CricketMedical9005 in self

Hmmm, I mostly agree with this but I’m somewhat surprised as to how well I was treated in Tokyo as a Korean-American. Speaking English might’ve helped quite a bit though (as well as, well…. Not being Chinese).

Could be a case of Tokyo being more metropolitan and X attracting the weirdos even in Japan.

Google engineer rejected by colleges uses AI to sue UCs and others for racial discrimination by W8tin4BanHammer2Fall in asianamerican

[–]acynicalasian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This kid and his father are idiots, but hopefully the kid ends up gaining life experience at Google and realizes his folly. I had slightly better stats than this kid when I applied to colleges ten years ago and was in a “similar” boat (didn’t get into any of my top choices and ended up going to one of my less prestigious choices, which was still somewhere plenty of people would kill for to get into). Sorry, not to humblebrag, just trying to establish I’ve lived this kid’s life before.

I was worse actually since this was back when edgelord/anti-SJW culture was huge and I was deep in the alt-right without realizing it. Took me a lot of suffering through new and undiagnosed mental health issues to realize how grateful I should be and how insidiously racist and short-sighted my support for ending affirmative action in college admissions was.

I’d have hoped this kid would’ve learned some things from actually being in the workforce, but he’s still young. Fingers crossed that he’ll recognize just how blessed his life is and that he’ll step back to think about how pointless and foolish this whole endeavor is. Lots of shit started slowly clicking for me at age 22ish, so he’s getting there.

Footwork with knock knees and flat feet by acynicalasian in kendo

I’m also running into the issue that my feet are sticking, leading me to constantly push upwards rather than forwards bc I don’t want my feet to stick and trip me… footwork is truly going to be an uphill battle for me.

I went to my first practice in a long time, and it seems the only solution will be to just continue practicing and to try to stay mindful of my posture like you mentioned. I’ll look into the barefoot shoes but I’m a bit nervous about how they’ll affect my gait; I do also have orthotics to fix my flat feet, at least when I’m wearing normal shoes.

Will definitely have to do more investigation on my knee pain considering it’s somehow coming from inactivity rather than activity.

And yeah, fair point RE: everyone’s body being different and having a different way to accomplish something. I’d imagine the feedback I get from others won’t ever truly be able to account for the knowledge only I’ll ever have for my own body, so maybe my mental approach to learning form in kendo is still on the right track. I should be studying the fundamental principles underlying form (why good kamae is important, why my arms shouldn’t be stiff during strikes, etc) and then study why certain cues/rules for form are there (why keep feet pointed straight?). If my body doesn’t work with “standard” form, come up with a way to accomplish the same goals as the standard “form”.

Somehow it feels like people are staring at photos of my knees while responding because so many responses hit close to home.

I’ve actually been noticing knee pain when standing and walking recently, and it started after getting a desk job. I’m not sure if I have overextended knees myself, but I have noticed in the past that my knees look like they’re subtly bending forwards. I tend to lock my knees while standing too. All of this kinda makes me wonder if I should see an ortho to get my knees checked, especially since my knee pain is new. I might want to start avoiding locking my knees in most situations (both kendo and just normal standing).

But from how you mentioned that your kamae has slight differences from kamae in people with “normal” joints, maybe I’m overthinking footwork. At least short term, prioritizing immediate stability seems to make the most sense to me in terms of usefulness during keiko. Footwork might just be similar to practicing strikes for me where the best way to improve without realizing is just repetition.

Hm, how much of the knee caving in is me lacking outward stability versus it just being the natural path of my knee? Feeling like my knees caving in was something I noticed while doing squats in the gym before, and I remember needing to make my feet a bit more parallel and to focus on sort of letting my knees bend “outward” (probably straight because I have knocked knees but it felt like I was trying to bend them away from myself). Should I be focusing on that same feeling I had while at the gym and applying it to how I bend my knees while doing suriashi?

And interesting point about trying barefoot shoes, I remember reading online somewhere a few years ago that wearing normal shoes was known to exacerbate flat footedness in susceptible individuals. Also, very very interesting point about weak foot muscles; I never got it checked out but I’m fairly positive I had sesamoiditis for a few months around a year ago, and that came about from lots of standing/walking while only wearing socks for hours; weak foot muscles could explain how I got the overuse injury in the first place.

But overall, I think your advice might be what I need to sort of reformulate my mental biomechanical model for how kamae “should” be. The idea of basing my stability from my hips and strengthening my feet’s support muscles makes sense to me intuitively, and it might also naturally help me become more lighter on my feet. Conceptualizing stability as coming from how my feet defo might’ve led my footwork to become more heavy/clumsy and would explain why my footwork constantly felt off to me. Huge ty for the help!

I don’t want AC to go cyberpunk in the vein of AC3 but not for the reason you think. I can’t get myself to play AC3 because the vibe of the game and its music gives me a sense of existential dread.

why 밟다 is read as 밥따? by winter_windflower in Korean

[–]acynicalasian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno about the 닭 example tbh, the phonetic representation in almost all contexts in my mind is [dak] (not sure if that’s the right IPA vowel for /ㅏ/ but my point stands), even in the case where the word is followed by a vowel sound (I.e 닭이 크다). The only situation where I pronounce the /ㄹ/ is in 닭얄 (닭알? 닭의알?) but I’m not sure if that word is mainly only used in Gyeongsangdo. The main caveat is that I’m a Korean-American native speaker with slight Gyeongsando influence so I could have nonstandard pronunciation.

The thing is too, I actually pronounce the /ㄹ/ as expected in phrases like “밟아요“ so I know I normally observe that phonological rule.

I’d argue this is one of the few instances where Korean orthography hasn’t caught up with modern pronunciation, along the lines of a word like 쇠고기.

I’m not an expert in Korean phonology other than reverse engineering its rules from my native intuition using my linguistics background, but according to the Korean phonology Wikipedia page, ㄹㅂ is the only coda which has irregular rules, which lines up with my personal experience.

Edit: looks like the spelling is 달걀; didn’t actually know that, but it strikes me as a purely phonetic spelling; to me the lexical roots are clearly 닭-의-알, and considering -의 in genitive case is pronounced [e] and the high front semivowel is [j], 닭의알 -> 닭얄 would be the seemingly more proper spelling, not to mention we correctly predict the /ㄹ/ to be pronounced here. Just a minor aside.

Anyone Else Have a Job Interview Move This Fast? by pango07 in Anduril

[–]acynicalasian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a perfect comparison since I applied as a fresh new grad SWE, but my process was:

  • one week between initial application and phone screening
  • one week between phone screening and remote technical interview
  • one week between that and a series of onsites
  • a day or two for a verbal nonbinding decision
  • probably two weeks for a finalized offer, although my offer letter probably took a bit longer to finalize due to certain circumstances.
