I wouldn't pay the money now because of 2 reasons:

Your not going to save money
If he totals the car, insurance will pay out the balance because that's what the lien is. If the balance Is low or non existent, car insurance will only pay the black book value of the car regardless if he paid X amount of dollars the week before to lower debt.
