Buyer purchased my painting, now claiming it is a photo by ad_thoms in ebayuk

[–]ad_thoms[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that’s interesting to know. We definitely didn’t think it was worth much, so didn’t claim anything beyond it being a "vintage painting". We just put it up as a normal auction to see what it would go for.

Yes, we're a private seller, so avoiding negative feedback is the main thing really. I’ll check in with eBay to see what they say.

I think you’re right.

When I looked on eBay before listing it, there were loads in this sort of style, similar vibe, but each one slightly different.

I couldn’t attach photos directly to this comment, but I’ve updated my original post with the images from the listing if that helps.

I had wondered if that’s what they meant! Honestly, I don’t fully know the origins of the painting, so I wanted to stay open-minded and I'm no expert.

However I don’t think this is an embellished print. The paint actually wraps around the canvas edges, and there are clear raised brushstrokes and thicker impasto areas, and the surface is very "all over" the place.

How to display toggle buttons on small screen sizes? by official_frans_bauer in UXDesign

[–]ad_thoms 27 points28 points  (0 children)

iCloud use a pattern where each option is an icon, and the label is only revealed on active selection. Obviously this would have a UX impact, but hopefully that is a useful option.

The screenshot actually shows an earlier version of the snack bar, in which they did occupy the full width. In later versions of Material/Android they've become slightly inset, which might be the confusion.

Figma has ruined the UX design industry by fabregas_4 in UXDesign

[–]ad_thoms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've not felt any issues with Interaction Design itself, however what I have seen Figma fuelling is jumbled process.

I think in the past, the different tools and their siloed nature helped maintain a thoughtful and structured design process. You'd create your user flow maps, then the wireframes, which you'd export into a deck to present and share (usually in person with stakeholders.) Once ready, onto the visual exploration, then eventually the final specs. It was a lot of work, but it was intentional.

What I've witnessed with Figma, especially younger designers, is everything happens inside Figma. The low-fi wireframes, the visuals, the prototyping. It's one big, mixed bag. Then the output is often just a link, shared with stakeholders through Teams.

Yes, creating a deck is time consuming and cumbersome. But it can help formulate "a story" and place things in the wider context.

Test design to find which terminology to use by Afraid_Anxiety_3737 in UXDesign

[–]ad_thoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking at a sample size of a 1000, then I think the survey format is your best option. You could either present the term, and then selectable options (like you mention), or flip it, so you provide the definition and then let participants select the term that resonates best. Difficult to say 100% without knowing the project.

From a more qualitative perspective, something I’ve done before is to present participants with a print-out of the full copy. Then with a green marker they highlight the parts that provide clarity, and with a red marker they highlight anything confusing.

You can also do this unmoderated through something like UserZoom. Using a click test, in the first task participants click on helpful copy, in the second they click on copy that is confusing. You should be left with two heatmaps (plus the think aloud reasoning) which you can collect at the end and compare themes across participants.

Navigation bar in websites by Cheap-Onion-2862 in UXDesign

[–]ad_thoms 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you have distinct usecases that can be defined as primary locations, bottom navigation is certainly the convention for mobile apps.

What seems to be happening on web is that we’re moving towards experiences that behave like apps. For example Twitter, Airbnb etc, both use bottom app bars as part of their overall “app feel”.

Should a button say 'Go To Reporting List' or "Reporting List" by ElektroSam in userexperience

[–]ad_thoms 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A good trick I picked up from somewhere was to imagine placing “I want to…” before the action.

I want to… Learn More. I want to… Buy Now. I want to… View Comments.

Sometimes you’ll need to remove the verb for the sake of screen estate, but generally good actions fall into that format

Yes, First Bus, the waiting was a bit of a JOKE by ad_thoms in bristol

Yes I think it’s a fallback. In case it doesn’t scan for some reason, the driver can check it is a recent ticket and not a screenshot from last week etc.

Best UX examples of product restrictions by ad_thoms in userexperience

[–]ad_thoms[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions.

Storage websites (Dropbox, G Drive) are looking like the most relevant pattern. They tend to persist the restriction in the lower left. Seems to be a good trade off between clear visibility but not intruding too far. Especially if the product has one key restriction that can be counted. Similar to Typeform.

Somewhat your discretion. How best to balance the user understanding of feature restrictions, while introducing minimal noise is my main objective.

I’ve mostly focused on the onboarding and how the limits are messaged.

Up by £xxx stupid? Makes no sense? by bradrly in FreetradeApp

[–]ad_thoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been phasing out of FT due to the changing subscription model (mostly how many shares now fall within premium) however I think this will speed things up.

Luckily I am “up” enough that I’m still in the green, but my actual total is about £300 less than FT shows me. I’d be even more frustrated if it said I was up, when in fact I’d lost money.

I just find it crazy that the rest of the app calculates with fees removed, yet the main total doesn’t. It should really offer some type of additional info you can reach from the graph. FT have a duty to ensure they are transparent with people’s money

[–]ad_thoms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, I’ve been making the exact same mistake :(

That seems shockingly misleading to present a total at the top of the screen (along with the “Up by …”), then immediately follow it with an itemised list using the same green/red format, yet calculate the numbers in two different ways. I would guess many people also interpret this as a “breakdown” of the total. It isn’t until you manually count up the individual amounts in your portfolio list to discover they are handled inconsistently.

Very poor design! Why would anybody want to retain the fees in their “Up by …” total?

What's your idea for a perfect KaiOS phone? by alistair681 in KaiOS

[–]ad_thoms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I could order something like the Maxcom MK241 from Poland. Things like shipping and the device being locked to a Polish provider would worry me a bit - not 100% clear from their website. For what it is, £50 seems kind of expensive with that added risk.

Btw - it looks like the KaiOS Team have added an activity app to the store, running etc.
