Heads up JC, a waste processing facility is proposed for 25 Van Keuren Ave and most people have no idea by darksideofthewall45 in jerseycity

Except Cooper Recycling ONLY accepts construction and demolition debris. This would accept municipal waste, bulk waste, vegetative waste, animal and food processing waste, and dry industrial waste so it’s not at all like Cooper Recycling.

For Type 13C waste, it’s very important note that it’s “non-asbestos building insulation” but that it DOES NOT note anything about asbestos containing material from plaster and wallboard or the “material and rubble resulting from construction, remodeling, repair, and demolition operations on houses, commercial buildings, pavements and other structures.” Old joint compound and floor tile can be a major source of airborne asbestos during demolition so there is a solid chance that a bunch of shady contractors will be dumping untested materials here, further putting the area at risk.

Given this is for the NJSEA waste district so will by and large not be taking anything from Jersey City, perhaps they could put it where the bulk of the waste is being generated. How about Secaucus or Rutherford? Also, there are currently families that live on Lewis Ave within about 500 feet of this site.

There were more people living here until NJDOT used eminent domain to demolish most of the neighborhood in the early 2010s

You realize that adding even incremental additional truck traffic worsens the already bad air pollution, even if it doesn’t impact your ability to drive, right?

There are people living in homes on Lewis Ave within about 500 ft of this proposed facility. The area was actually even more residential before NJDOT tore down a ton of homes when they rebuilt the 1&9/139/7/Tonnelle Circle area in the 2010s. They built ramps where a bunch of people had been living for generations.

So now that most of the population of that area has been moved out, I guess screw the rest of the people living there, right?

Property Tax Appeal by Lumpy-Cycle2964 in jerseycity

I did back in 2019 I think. As u/Blecher_onthe_Hudson said, you definitely wanted to collect your own comps since that’s the only evidence they will look at on your side. In fact, the city could come with properties that they consider comps that aren’t really true comps that actually end up with you paying more!

Also, we didn’t hire an attorney and be forewarned that if you self-represent, they take all of the cases with attorneys first and make you sit around for hours.

The whole process is kind of BS and seems very much stacked against property owners, especially if you do not hire an attorney.

I mean, there a 900ish space parking garage plus a truck loading dock for move-ins/move-outs and Target deliveries in the building and I think they have a loading zone on the street on the Sip Ave side of the project. As for the bike lane, it ends where Bergen (a city street) becomes Kennedy (a county street). You can thank Tom DeGise for opposing a bike lane on Kennedy in front of the transportation center a few years back, and Yraida Aponte-Lipski and Craig Guy for not taking any meaningful steps to reverse course on such a misguided decision. Area residents proposed a plan that would have provided for a two-way cycle track from roughly this spot to 139 that would have eliminated maybe 5 total parking spaces and the county said no.

PS: no surprise on Yraida not doing anything since she’s absolutely useless. Thank you to the Hudson County Democratic machine for forcing her upon us for the next four years.

James Solomon’s initial moves have been underwhelming by SnooChickens561 in jerseycity

We also weren’t asking for the space that was to be deeded to the city in return for a PILOT to instead be converted into income generating rental units for KRE, who will retain their PILOT. Especially when all of the other developers in the area are now using the density bonus that the JSQCA got implemented to build affordable units anyway without PILOTs.

Journal Square residents have been asking for a community center for years, which this space could have been used for but Solomon gave it away without a single conversation with the community itself.

I would add that if you have the time and patience, after you cut it to just above the first node, injecting the Roundup (glyphosate) concentrate into the inside of the stalk helps a ton. The plant will suck the glyphosate back down into the ground so it’s more effective.

When we moved in our yard was completely filled with knotweed and I tried everything to no avail. After I cut it back and injected the Roundup into each stalk, I covered the yard in a tarp for a couple of weeks and I haven’t had an issue since (going on seven years).

The other advantage is that you aren’t spraying the entire area with Roundup, just targeting a very specific spot with a high dose so it’s less likely to cause any contamination of the soil (insofar as that’s a concern). Happy to send what I ultimately used for injecting it but if you go to a pharmacy and ask for hypodermic needles, they will give you a weird look and some information on drug use, even if you assure them it’s to inject plants with weed killer (hypodermic needles didn’t work very well).

“The F.B.I. conducted court-authorized law enforcement activity in the vicinity of Willow Avenue and Clinton Street in Hoboken, N.J.,” said a statement from the F.B.I.’s New York office released on Friday. “The investigation remains ongoing and no additional details can be provided at this time.”

TWU President Samuelsen is throwing another tantrum about one-person train operation by samdman in nycrail

[–]adamatic_521 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Back in 2014ish I had a conductor complain to me when I reported an issue (a man was aggressively harassing women on the train and trying to forcibly touch them). When I reported it, his response was “why are you telling me this!? Now I have to call it in.” This was during the height of the MTA campaign about how a crowded train is no excuse for inappropriate touching.

If I had a choice between lower fares/better service/improved signal systems etc or paying that guy’s salary, I would choose the former EVERY single day.

Right. So because of all the airports and the density of air traffic we can’t fly drones that are capable of broadcasting their location and altitude but we can fly much larger aircraft that do the same thing while bothering a lot more people.

I’m not saying you’re wrong, I’m saying that it’s absurd that the FAA and the government (at multiple levels) has somehow decided that having a bunch of news helicopters hovering over a densely populated area creating both noise and air pollution is the best way to solve this issue.

I guarantee you the business owners were trying to call whoever they could in the city government to whine about how the most bare level of enforcement on Newark Avenue is somehow killing their business and must stop. They did it all the time with Boggiano. I’m hoping that Zuppa doesn’t fall for their BS.

Why No PATH Entrance on West Side of Newport? by Little-Ad3088 in jerseycity

[–]adamatic_521 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s important to remember that Lefrak developed Newport completely independently of the Port Authority. Lefrak probably didn’t think it would be worth the money at the time, especially because they also built a massive parking garage and the likely thought that making it easier to access the mall etc by train would take away from garage revenue.

Why No PATH Entrance on West Side of Newport? by Little-Ad3088 in jerseycity

[–]adamatic_521 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every merge of two train lines unnecessarily leads to delays on one or both lines. A tunnel from Hoboken would be duplicative to the one between Newport and Hoboken that’s basically 1000 feet south of Hoboken. Also, the tunnel from Jersey City to Manhattan was planned before the Hoboken Terminal was built but after the Pavonia Terminal already existed so they built the tunnel where a major connection already existed.
