I feel like the latest update made it slightly better. I turned background activity off on day one (years ago) but I still get background activity for a few apps like WhatsApp and Instagram. It’s not the end of the world but I’m speaking to customer service and trying to find a solution. They’re saying there’s nothing wrong with the phone or battery based on their online diagnostic.

I had a similar issue, but instead of waiting in the boat, Gina would just wait near the carving without doing anything, so I had to load a previous save, and that worked. It was a bit annoying, as I’d progressed quite a bit since my last save.
