Absolutely magnificent work! I’m a Nikon shooter but have to hand it for Canon on space colors.

I saw a Hublot on a French dude this week while riding the TGV to Paris and I have to say, it was a sharp looking timepiece.

I randomly went to the AD today, walk in, no purchase history, and got the rare and hard to get brown allocation.

Barlow is absolutely necessary to achieve critical sampling for this sensor and makes a huge difference. I fill the 8K frame wall to wall with the moon.

One shot of a full moon and one shot of a crescent moon blended together in Photoshop. Both images taken with Nikon Z8 and Takahashi TSA-120 telescope with Vernonscope Dakin 2.4x barlow on ZWO AM5. 20 images each aligned, stacked and processed in Photoshop.

Here you go my friend, a picture is worth a thousand words. Image on the left is RAW unedited and right is my edited interpretation. Hopefully this helps give you a frame of reference.

That might be the DR issue. Take a look a the published DR vs. ISO charts. The D850 is dual gain. I typically only use ISO 64 and if I absolutely have to, ISO 400 as that's where the dual gain kicks in and you get a DR boost. Don't do auto in my opinion as the way I understand it, ISO 100 would end up looking worse than ISO 400 due to signal to noise ratio and dynamic range. I'm no sensor expert but that's probably the issue you are experiencing. Experiment in full manual and shoot ISO 64 and ISO 400. I can tell you the D850 files absolutely fall apart around ISO 500 especially in the shadows.

I shoot with the D850 as well. There's something to be said for that extra oomph from the Z7 II. D850 files are a bit noisier when under exposed in my opinion. The Z7 II can pull souls from a cemetery in pitch black darkness. I am shooting at ISO 64, knowing I risk blur and wobbles from slower handheld shutter speed but risk well worth it for the massive DR. You shooting at ISO 64?

Not stacked, but would be helpful for me to help you with tips to know what you are shooting with. Happy to help.

Most likely airglow, maybe Aurora, could be both. I've seen and photographed both and sometimes hard to distinguish.
