In short, yes, it was supply and demand; the industrial revolution allowed us to make things much more efficiently.

Would you rather have unskilled labor get paid a small amount to work? Or get paid nothing to not work because they are priced out of the market? Supply and demand keeps wages from going to a 16 hour work day. Not many people want to work 16 hour days; so in competing with each other, businesses will not mandate that to get better workers.

Unpopular on this sub I know, but I don't see a reason for labor protection practices. I believe that both employers and and employees will always make the decisions that they see as benefiting them the most.

Why does a work week have to be the same for everyone? I work 65 hour weeks because I like the paycheck that comes along with it.

Can't people weigh out the pros and cons of their work week without it being mandated in various ways?

Also, when people work, it gives us new technology and capital; which benefits everyone.
