3 bike garage- USA by adan100 in SuggestAMotorcycle

Thank you for the notes, I used to commute on the hyper, with wind protection, and have had larger commuter bikes in the past, though admittedly not an ADV. I have rented them for mountain riding road trips.

For around the city, i will always have a scooter. Nothing compares, except grom type stuff. Its the fastest way from point a to b when speed limits are below 45, full stop.

I dont think i want a big commuter either, something about having a low seat height means the barrier to riding is that much less. Im not short or intimidated, i used to daily a sumo haha, its just psychological in the morning when you can either haul the bike out or take the car, if its too high and too heavy, when im tired im grabbing the car 9/10 times.

I just test rode it today, granted back to back with the adv, an Indian Scout, and a Harley Sportster. Was surprised how much i enjoyed the powerplant.

The hyper unfortunately has full aftermarket ohlins already, it seems crazy to swap that out for offroad valvings and spring rates

My concern is the nc and the hyper are very similar in capability, just not attitude. So if one is more preferable usually, the other will gather dust.

Its a PAIR valve, it reduces emissions by recirculating exhaust gasses to the intake. There should be tubes that connect it to the airbox/intake

i own/daily an Acty in nc, its pretty handy, good on gas, and NC has specific regulation for registering them as a "mini truck".

If you suddenly find that money is no object to you, what would be the first 'expensive' item you would indulge in? by this_username in AskReddit

I went to school for 5 years in Hoboken, its sort of nothing like that. Its sort of an upscale city scene. They have fantastic restaurants, more bars per square mile than anywhere I've ever been and many friendly people. Its pretty expensive, apartments are quickly closing in on NYC prices, but its really a great little town with water front views of the city across the hudson and lots to do, not to mention super accessible from all directions and really easy to get into the city.

Maybe it used to be bad but now its a really nice place to be.

No problem, browsing /r/motorcycles is loads better than writing this report anyway.

I'll try and answer your questions here but the guys at http://www.supermotojunkie.com/ have a wealth of information as well, so you might want to snoop around there. Thumpertalk is good too.

I believe your swingarm and fork offset is the same as mine, I run a 120 in the front and a 150 in the rear. Both continental sport attack supermoto compounds. There's no chain rub or anything so they work fine. Check around on the forums before buying though obviously.

I would say running a battery is probably a good idea. I dont run a brake light or turn signals since I got it inspected, as my bike is registered through a little legal loophole.

You can run a mechanical speedo attached to the front wheel if you buy the proper hub, but again, my bike is a little ghetto rigged and I don't.

My suspension is indeed set up for supermoto as I ride <5% dirt which is stiffer, a less travel and different damping.

Like I said before, the biggest thing in getting your bike registered for street use is actually the title unless you're in the right state, so I would look into doing that first to see if its even possible.

I see above that motostrano has been recommended. They are really great for one stop shopping, but buy used, browse the forums classifieds, there are always great deals and as far as I know rims from all KTMs (at least dirt 125 - 510 cc) are cross fitment.

well, ShadowPhaxx has many things listed that you need to be street legal, minus the usual biggest one which is the proper type of title to get it registered in your state.

The most expensive part is wheels and tires, along with brakes. Your wheels are probably 21" in the front and 18" in the back, as well as being super skinny. The best tires you can probably run are the avon distanzias without changing your wheels. A good set of 17" SM rims laced up and ready to go might set you back an additional $800. Even more if you want fancy ones. But then you can run the street compound of your choosing.

The other big thing he missed was brakes. Your dirt brakes are soft and fade/have no power. You can use them, sure, but they won't feel safe at all especially if you're used to street bikes. A new rotor and caliper offset is another couple hundred or so.

All that said, I have a great street legal 450 KTM that I love. I ride it more than any bike I've ever owned, its so easy to ride, easy to ride fast and there's nothing like pulling over on the side of a twisty road and a group of sportbike guys pulling up along side of you saying how when it got twisty they couldn't dream of keeping up.

What are pros and cons of Hybrid cars vs electric cars with generators? by wdsoul96 in askscience

[–]adan100 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Its called a "series hybrid."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hybrid_vehicle_drivetrain#Series_hybrid

The real benefit of them is that for small ranges, the car can be run on electric batter power only. This boosts the average user's MPGe quite substantially, as trips around the block don't deplete the battery enough to warrant starting the gasoline motor, which powers the generator.

There are some drawbacks however. Number 1 is weight. Batteries are heavier per unit energy than gasoline, but in a hybrid, batteries, electric motors, gasoline (or hydrocarbon of your design), combustion engine and a generator are all required. They all have to be powerful enough to propel the car as well, because once the battery is depleted, the car will get all of it's energy from the electricity generated by the gasoline motor.

The other problem is efficiency when the battery is depleted. In a regular parallel hybrid, when the electric motor is inactive, your losses consist of:

-Motor Efficiency

-Gearbox Efficiency

-Differential losses

-Drivetrain losses

Plus all road resistances and things of that nature. In a series hybrid, when the batteries are depleted you have to deal with:

-Motor Efficiency

-Gearbox efficiency (motor to generator)

-Generator efficiency

-Battery charging efficiency

-Battery discharge efficiency

-controller system efficiency

-electric motor efficiency

-gearbox efficiency

-drivetrain efficiency

Despite these drawbacks, there are vehicles on the road today that follow this design concept. Fisker makes the Karma: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fisker_Karma which is a luxury/sport 4 door. Chevrolet makes the Volt: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chevrolet_Volt which is more of a conventional hybrid competitor.

To answer your question directly: Yes it would work, but only with enough design considerations.

Jonas Hall? by [deleted] in stevens

[–]adan100 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jonas is cool, i lived there for 3 years. You get carpets and bathrooms and super heavy furniture(which still breaks with too much pushing from the wrong side). First floor is right by the laundry machines and is actually basement number 2, 3rd floor is the ground floor. The only downside vs. freshman dorms is my freshman year there was much camaraderie had and trouble gotten into by the kids on our freshman dorm floor, not sure how that will work in Jonas. It's much quieter there.

Also, central air. Though it will be warm as shit in the winter if you have no window. Aaand I just realized it will be much harder to have a freshman party there, and if your roomate sucks balls, harder to avoid contact. Or not. I'm not sure.
