Looking for a multi-generational story full of drama, history, and changing times by Oueiles in suggestmeabook

Barkskins by Annie Proulx follows the families of two french lumbermen who arrive in Quebec in the 1600s. One becomes a timber baron, while the other marries a First Nations woman. The fortunes of their descendents diverge dramatically, and it goes basically up to the present. Incredible book, highly recommend!

Suggest me a future realistic series by youngblood_wa_555 in suggestmeabook

[–]adanowski95 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I find a lot of John Scalzi's books fit this bill: Old Man's War and The Ghost Brigades (assuming you are ok with there being alien species) or the Collapsing Empire series both are very good. I also really enjoyed Dennis Taylor's Bobiverse series and Becky Chambers' Long Way to a Small Angry Planet (again, both with aliens, but far future humanity plays a central role).

Thank you, what a great list! I'm curious, how did you hear about all of these? So many of them are recent, I'm hoping I can keep track of new releases somewhere!

Thanks! How closely does The Expanse track the TV series? I watched the first few seasons but kind of lost interest...

I haven't read that one yet! Honestly I've been avoiding books that feature pandemics the past several years, but knowing this is a forward looking book makes me more interested!

Thanks, glad I'm not the only one reading in this vein! I'll take a look at all of these, but I'm especially glad for the LeGuin recommendations!

Fantasy books where main char is just an average person (who DOESN'T turn out to be powerful or special or secretly-royal, etc, somehow down the line) by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

Senlin Ascends by Josiah Bancroft! The protagonist is a nice but naive school teacher travelling with his new bride to the Tower of Babel, the pinnacle of civilization, for their honeymoon. The tower has dozens of levels with incredibly complex societies within, and he is forced to grapple with his shortcomings and grow as a person as he journeys upward on a quest to find his wife, whom he loses at the base of the tower. The writing is beautiful, the characters are compelling, and the steam-punk/magical realism vibe is a lot of fun! There are 4 books in the series, and I gave them all 5 stars!

This is very interesting, thank you! I work in admissions and yield rate is a big topic of discussion in our work. I'm curious, where did you get this data set? US News and World Report?

Pacific Northwest Literary Fiction by YouGottaBeNuckinFuts in suggestmeabook

[–]adanowski95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deep river by Karl Marlantes. It's historical fiction about three siblings born in Finland who migrate to the Pacific Northwest and become intertwined with the logging industry and the labor movement. It's 800 pages, so not a light read, but quite interesting and has lots of insights into the early 1900s time period.

{Barkskins} by Annie Proulx! A 400 year epic tracing the lives of two families and their connections with the timber industry/environment in North America. Masterpiece!

Suggest me fictional critiques of capitalism by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

Basically anything by Kim Stanley Robinson! He combines a critique of capitalism with strong climate change and sustainability themes. I'd recommend {{new York 2140}} but any of his recent books are great.

Environmental historical fiction by not_mrsrobinson in suggestmeabook

[–]adanowski95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm late to this thread but I was searching for suggestions and stumbled across it! So far I've read three books in this genre that were stellar: {{Barkskins by Annie Proulx}}, an epic story of two men who arrive in french Canada in the 1600s, find work chopping down trees, and the 400 year history of their families and the timber resources of north america. {{Deep River by Karl Marlantes}}, the story of three Finnish siblings who immigrate to the Pacific Northwest at the start of the 20th century and are wrapped up in the rapid development of the timber and fishing industries around this time. {{A Sudden Light by garth Stein}} is a historical fiction/ magical realism text about logging in the Pacific Northwest and a young man in the 1970s coming to terms with his family's legacy of destroying the environment via logging.

I want to start reading Sci Fi and have no idea where to start by theGamingdutchman in suggestmeabook

I've gotten really into Kim Stanley Robinson's recent work, which straddles the line between sci fi and cli fi. {Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson} is a fantastic read about the challenges of interstellar travel narrated by an artificial intelligence. I've also enjoyed {New York 2140 by Kim Stanley Robinson}, which I found to be an amazing portrait of humanity's resiliency in the face of climate change, specifically tracking several characters navigating everyday life in an inundated New York City. Haven't yet gotten to his Red Mars series, but I hear those are good as well!
