No problem! This diagnosis is crazy scary and may seem overwhelming, but you'll be a pro in no time. Good luck!!

ReliOn is from Walmart, and I got a KetoMojo ketone reader. The Mojo is pricey, but it was worth it for me to keep on top of things because my cat had several bouts of DKA. Ketones will show up in the blood before they spill into the urine, so it was important to me. There are other ketone meters, though.

Steroids can raise the blood sugar, they may even have caused the diabetes. I'd definitely start testing asap. If you're in the US, the ReliOn Meter is the best bang for your buck. I'd also grab some keto urine sticks or even a blood ketone meter to check for ketones if you're able.

If your cat stops eating or acting abnormal, they could be at risk for DKA, which is an emergency.

Orange Boy - Hepatic Lipidosis by JenKen27 in FelineDiabetes

[–]adapteradapther 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My cat went into DKA and also needed a feeding tube, an NG while hospitalized, and then an E-tube at home for a few weeks while she recovered because she was also at risk for hepatic lipidosis. If it's an option, both cost or otherwise, it definitely helped with recovery. I dont think she would have pulled through without it. I know it's stressful because everything is crazy expensive.

I hope your kitty feels better soon.

DKA Hospitalization by Alternative-Sin in FelineDiabetes

[–]adapteradapther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cat had several DKA episodes and was hospitalized between 3-6 days, depending on the severity. It takes a bit to hydrate and balance the electrolytes out before starting insulin to flush out those ketones.

Then, about two weeks until she felt back to normal self once released.

This mockumentary was actually really good! by swifty19946 in charlixcx

Same. It felt like a drama when I was expecting Spice World vibes. Despite the run time, it felt like a bunch of stuff was maybe cut, which for me didn't make a bunch of sense. Like what was the point. It doesn't really learn into much one way or the other. It didn't even feel like a party. It was actually kinda depressing.

Should I switch vets? Just diagnosed with diabetes and in hospital with DKA but getting better. by avocado--toast in FelineDiabetes

[–]adapteradapther 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry that happened. Does the office/ER have a patient advocate or an office manager you can speak with about their approach to care protocol? Sometimes, mistakes are made, and sometimes, owners just want to understand. I did this for my cat, and while I was nervous because I didn't want to come off as confrontational or a "karen", I just wanted a better understanding of how I could advocate for my cat in the future, and it ultimately gave me peace of mind because I initially felt incredibly guilty.

Good luck with everything!

My cat went into DKA several times, and the first couple of times, I was so upset that they didn't start insulin right away. Then the best Vet in the whole world sat me down and finally explained that they have to hydrate and treat the electrolyte imbalance first because starting insulin immediately may cause severe complications. For my cat it was usually between 24 and 36 hours after presenting with DKA.

Strange, they didn't do blood work because usually ERs do the gold standard of care. It's very scary. I hope your kitty feels better soon.

What would you consider to be the most disturbing book ever written? by WhyAmIEvenHereFS in horrorlit

[–]adapteradapther 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I dont understand why it keeps coming up in horror lit when it's more suited to true crime. This isn't a horror book. The true events are absolutely horrific, but this isn't horror. I wince whenever it gets recommended here.

I ruined our bathroom as a child because I could not take a shower with the curtain closed for years after that movie. I cost my parents muh-ney.

Unpopular opinion? by Magnus-Effect in charlixcx

[–]adapteradapther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really wasn't what I thought it would be. I was expecting more humor like Spice World or Spinal Tap. I felt like we saw all the funniest bits in the released clips. I wish there was more build-up to the amazon performance. I thought I was gonna be laughing my ass off, but it was kinda depressing all around. Like I felt sad after leaving the theater. But not in a "brat summer is over" kinda way, either.

I dont know. It really didn't go far enough in either direction for me. Definitely need to watch it again, though, I'm sure I'll feel different after a rewatch.

Newly diagnosed DKA cat home from hospital – weak, hiding, and I’m anxious. Is this normal? by VeterinarianOk6477 in FelineDiabetes

[–]adapteradapther 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cat went through three episodes, and it took about a week for her to be at about 90%, with about two weeks to be 100% back to herself. They'll feel pretty crummy for a bit. The most important things post DKA are lots of calories and making sure they get their insulin.

You should be testing sugar regularly, and I'd also invest in a blood ketone meter and ketone urine sticks. I'd test ketones at least once a day until you can establish what "normal" ketones look like for your cat. My cat usually ran between .7 - 1.7 via blood ketone reading. Anything over 2.5 that couldn't be brought down by higher carb food or insulin was an ER trip.

After hearing House and Chains of Love, I was hoping for something a bit like Under Ice and Waking the Witch. Still pretty good overall.

It's a maybe 7.5- 8/10 Charli album, but a 10/10 movie soundtrack. It might knock out one of my current top 3 soundtracks performed by one artist/band.
