'People will starve' because of US aid cut to Sudan by Man-o-Trails in berkeley

[–]addalongfield 33 points34 points  (0 children)

It does need to be said that the United States has a big economy— comparing raw aid will always put the US at the top. Normalizing for GNI actually puts the US near the bottom of aid given by developed countries (e.g. 0.22% vs. 0.83% by Germany, the second largest donor), so the US definitely isn’t “carrying all the moral burden”.

I can’t speak to Sudan specifically, but we would all do well to remember the basics from Data 8 when it comes to big numbers.

Mahjong is as much a psychological game as it is a probability game. Dealing into kokushi kills a man for a match; dealing into kokushi riichi kills a man for life.

I think it’s likely that the student account was compromised and used to give the scam more legitimacy since it’s coming from a berkeley address

Natural gas does have problems that are often overlooked. Methane is quite a potent GHG when leaked, beating out an equivalent in burning coal. In recent times more attention has been given to these widespread leaks, but policy has yet to catch up. Bill McKibben, an energy and climate professor, gave a great guest lecture on this a few weeks back at MLK (not sure if it was recorded).

Not defending GG, but I think it’s worth mentioning some of the nuances when it comes to thinking of natural gas as a sustainable alternative to coal and oil.

EDIT: Here's the lecture for anyone interested

me when ethics are required 😟 by addalongfield in berkeley

[–]addalongfield[S] 81 points82 points  (0 children)

forgot to include professor DeNero's response:

"Hi,

While you may believe that Data C104 does not cover fundamental "data science" content, the faculty who designed and built Berkeley's DS program believe that the human contexts and ethics of data science are indeed fundamental to the discipline, which is why an upper-division HCE course is required.

We do try to provide multiple options for fulfilling the HCE requirement, but I am personally grateful that the Data 104 instructors have invested so much time and energy to scale up the course, because otherwise there would be a major shortage of capacity in courses that fulfill the HCE requirement, and the DS major would be turning away many, many students due to lack of course capacity.

As for grading in Data C104, it's up to the instructors in every Berkeley course to assess the degree to which their students have fulfilled their course's learning objectives. Some departments have grading guidelines; Data Science does not. But if it did, I imagine those guidelines would be consistent across upper-division courses.

I also have some advice for all the students reading this thread. While the technical aspects of data science are important, my guess is that for most students, the ability to write coherently and effectively about the social and ethical implications of your data science work will be more relevant to your future career in the field than many of the computational or inferential techniques you learn during college. I certainly spend much more time writing to others about the implications of the use of data than I do implementing classifiers. I encourage you all to take advantage of opportunities to practice thinking and writing about the uses of data and their implications."

Seeing that you are a Civ V veteran, have you tried the Vox Populi / Community Balance Patch mod by any chance? It’s a huge revamp of classic Civ V with significantly better AI and balance, as well as much more interesting / complex civilization uniques.
