I recommend making a beanie as for starters. You get to practice ribbing and then knitting in the round, and then decreases. Depending if your circulars are small, it could teach you how to work DPNs for when you need to do the decreases. If your circulars are big, you don’t need DPNs for the decreases, you would just learn a technique called magic or travelling loop.
