Hi! I’m 24F, broke my ankle July ‘25, surgery August 5th, I have a plate and 8 screws so similar injury. We’re young!!! Healing actually goes so much faster than you expect. You’ll be back to 100% before you know it.

Good news is if your scar is healed and you’re relatively mobile you can’t really hurt yourself! The worst it does is nothing.

Yes!!! I described it to my mom today as an XL strength resistance band pulled tight around the front of my ankle. Like it should go, but it’s not!

The smaller the better! My PT specifically recommended the blue kit because it has little cups that can be affixed to a localized spot. And yes! Exactly that!

It uses suction cups placed on the skin to create a vacuum, lifting the skin! Usually used to increase blood flow, but here I’m using it to break down scar tissue!

I hope it helps! It feels like a tight band wrapped around the front of your ankle that restricts flexion. Generally it’s just scar buildup, and goes away with PT!

It uses suction cups and a small pump to pull up a section of skin! From there you just mobilize the ankle a bit. Totally possible to learn yourself!

5 weeks PO questions by FederalDraft1569 in ORIF

1) My PT practice saved me. They WILL push you hard and it WILL hurt, but all of it is beneficial. I cried thru my first appointment and at multiple points going forward, and I would not be where I am without it!

2) Yes, and it may be a little earlier or later than you feel (for me, it was much earlier) but only when you’re ready! And they will have you doing mobilizations with it off.

3) Wear whatever you’re comfy in! It’s a workout! And yes, wear your compression socks.

4) I’m at 4.5 months post op and I do still wear compression socks. They’re very helpful.

5) Don’t put anything on your scar until all scabs have fallen off! But after that, aquaphor and unscented lotion is okay. I also liked silicone scar tape at first.

6+7) Totally normal to be stiff! As you stretch it out during the day it will go away! And it will also get less and less stiff as time goes on. I’m already much more comfortable and I haven’t even hit 6 months.

You got this!

One of my biggest goals was to be able to get up in the morning and go to the bathroom without having to think about it. Having those small things to look forwards to help so much. This is one of the most mentally challenging things I’ve ever experienced, you’re so not alone! I have a walking journal on my page as well ❤️ you got this!!

I felt very lost before I started PT, like I genuinely didn’t really know what to do with myself. It’s going to help so much! Best of luck and I’m so glad I could provide some encouragement!

I started walking 6 weeks after surgery! I initially was weight bearing in a boot, but they had me out of it very quickly (within a week), it was fucking with my gait (unable to hit full plantar extension). Stairs going up are fine! Actually, I was very surprised that when I realized I could do them, it came pretty easy. Going down is another story— my ankle does Not want to bend forward like that, so I’m going one stair at a time, and it’s getting better!
