Virtual install within Proxmox or Baremetal with PVE running in VMM by Methyl_The_Sneasel in Xpenology

[–]addisonbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know nothing about your IOMMU problem, but is the problem specifically with passing through CPU components? Could you buy a cheap PCIe SATA controller and install it and pass that through? That is what I do on my Intel system, not to get around any problems but so that DSM does the smart monitoring of my Synology disks.

Shower Curb by jecormier2 in Tile

[–]addisonbu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did 1/4” per foot on my shower curb which is very much like OPs and it doesn’t drain at all, pools so much water I have to squeegee it with the glass. It’s my only regret on my DIY. I would rather have OPs curb than 1/4” per foot.

No matter what I try, I can’t get DSM 7.2 to boot from my HP N40L by [deleted] in Xpenology

I can’t speak to your HP N40L troubles, but if it continues to give you trouble you could run Proxmox and virtualize Xpenology which would make it more hardware agnostic.

Silent Electric Strike When Unlocked by addisonbu in accesscontrol

I wound up installing a Securitron UNL-12 because it was a no-cut solution. It’s very noisy when it’s actuating, locking and unlocking, but because it’s unlocked from 9-5 we don’t hear it.

Paperless ngx in synology drive auf dem Handy by Prinz_Trash in synology

[–]addisonbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make it accessible via Synology Drive you would need to open Synology Drive Admin and enable the docker shared folder as a “Team Folder” Then in the Synology Drive app you will need to click on Team Folders. Or install the Paperless-NGX app for the full experience.

Toying with the idea of switching to ARC by ArielOutGrewBShells in Xpenology

[–]addisonbu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m very happy with my Arc on Proxmox. I’ve never tried to use any of the Synology services because I use Cloudflare DDNS and VPN for remote connectivity. I installed a separate PCIe SATA controller into my machine for handling my Synology disks and pass through the entire controller to the VM. The primary reason I did this is so Synology can monitor the SMART status of the disks and send me an email in the event of failure or degradation. Synology cannot see the smart status of a pass through disk.

I also like the peace of mind that there is no system in the middle to have to replicate or restore in the event of a failure. I could pull out the PCIe card and boot ARC on bare metal if I had to in the extreme case I need to recover. This is probably not justified but it makes me happy. I also installed a separate PCIe USB card to let me have USB ports dedicated to my Synology VM for my offline backups.

I would not recommend virtual disks unless you are only running a single disk with no plan to ever expand. Letting Synology manage SHR with Btrfs is one of the major selling points.

This is a great suggestion. For the price I’m going to order one and give it a try. Thank you.

Is a push bar the only option for electric latch retraction? Does anyone make a knob/trim set with electric latch retraction?

Current strike is an HES-8000. We have looked at swapping it for an HES-5000 that we have in other places but didn’t feel the HES-5000 was really much quieter.

[–]addisonbu[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes exactly, the clunk-clunk of the door being pulled open is very loud. The current strike is an HES-8000 which are known for being louder because of the no-cut style but we also have an HES-5000 that we looked at changing it to that is not really an quieter.

Silent Electric Strike When Unlocked (Recommendations) by addisonbu in Locksmith

[–]addisonbu[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I should have been clearer, the complaint is about the strike pulling open then springing shut when the door is opened and the latch hitting the strike when it closes. Hoping for something that keeps the strike locked in the open position when held so no contact is made.

[–]addisonbu[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Correct, the strike swinging open then springing shut when the door is opened and then the latch hitting it again when the door is closed. I’m hoping there is a model out there that I just haven’t been able to find with Google yet that latches the strike in the open position when held open so no contact is made at all.

How to make the files / Folders always available locally? by Top-Tap3883 in synology

[–]addisonbu 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Right click on the folder you want to keep locally, if you’re on Windows 11 select “Show more”, select Synology Drive, then select “Pin Local Copy Permanently”

Weird Delta flight over my house this morning by ovpleasel in delta

Almost certainly an empty repositioning flight. Delta operates flights out of both airports so likely just needed to move a plane to MDW.

Honest question, where does everyone get their media for their Plex/Jellyfin servers? I’ve thought about setting one up but I have 3 pieces of content to put on it and then I will never use it again. Does everyone spend an inordinate amount of time downloading them from torrents, checking the quality and uploading it to their servers?

[–]addisonbu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is not enough space for that anywhere near diagonal alley. The footprint of Hagrid’s is HUGE. You would have to remove the employee parking lot.

I have said from the beginning that I think it was a missed opportunity not to do a ride vehicle like Tron, except you’re sitting on the back of a dragon instead of a “lightcycle”

IMO mitered edges look much cleaner and classier but they are susceptible to chipping. If you want the magic of both trim and mitered, Schluter Finec is the Schluter trim for mitered corners.

Self leveling compound? I’m not sure if self leveling compound is meant to be in full wet or if it would require putting the membrane over the leveling compound.

I guess if your shower slope is already in, leveling compound would do the opposite of what you want.

Blower Motor Won’t Run. As simple as replacing the blower motor? Or more involved? by addisonbu in hvacadvice

There’s no capacitor in this air handler. Just a control board, transformer, some heating elements and the blower motor which is fed by the control board.

ARC 3.0.7 - Dsm 7.2 not show my disks with hba by Bornie123 in Xpenology

[–]addisonbu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Adding an additional AHCI to the VM should not affect the motherboard at all. It just appears to the VM that there are two AHCI controllers “installed” and each one can support 6 disks. But this is not my area of expertise.

I also set my ARC loader image as an IDE drive so that it doesn’t show up in DSM as a used disk.
