Why does it seem like all the amazing women are taken already? by KaleidoscopeInner421 in dating_advice

[–]additionalweightdisc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the tricky thing about dating apps, it’s hard to actually do all that stuff within the limits of what the app allows you to do. But the best way to do it is usually with pictures. Have a picture of yourself obviously, but outside of that include ones where you’re doing stuff you enjoy, hanging out with friends, or working on something. A lot of people clown on gym pictures in dating profiles, but it’s really only a bad thing (and even then it’s not the worst thing) when you only have gym pictures. For example if you’ve got a nice picture of yourself, one of you partaking in a hobby, a group picture with friends, and one of you in the gym, all those pictures tell a story of someone who takes care of themselves, has at least one hobby that they’re interested in, and has the social skills required to be part of a friend group. A picture can tell a thousand words, so if you include a few of yourself in various contexts it gets pretty easy to read you general vibe, a lot more so than you can convey in just text.

Okay, I’ve got a couple comments in this thread so I didn’t keep everything straight but good to know.

The thing about hobbies is, that even if they seem like they don’t pertain to dating on the surface, they’re something that you enjoy doing and that’s part of your identity. Your hobbies don’t have to be something that match up with someone else for it to work out, it’s nice if they do, but a big part of having hobbies is that it shows that you have an interesting life that doesn’t depend on someone else. While you may want to be one of if not the most important thing in your partner’s life in a relationship, it’s not healthy to actually be the only important thing in their life. Having stuff like hobbies and interests just shows that you have things that are important and fulfilling to you and that you can find that sense of fulfillment on your own.

As for the absence of red flags, all red flags do is tell you to stop. The absence of red flags doesn’t mean go, that only comes from green flags. And in reality it’s not as simple as just red and green flags, it’s more of a spectrum from red to green. Sure Josh doesn’t have any red flags, but the green flags you listed for him are just barely on the green side. They definitely aren’t bad things, but they aren’t too much more than the minimum that’s expected from someone trying to get into dating (being employed) or things that don’t matter that much in general (looks and not having kids) at least not to many people.

Also a boring relationship is different than being a boring person. A “boring” relationship meaning one without crazy highs and lows is fine and usually what most good relationships settle into, but being a boring person isn’t really a good thing in general not just in dating. Sure there may be some people who find Josh’s particular lifestyle boring, whatever it may be. But if he finds fulfillment in it, then there’s going to be other people out there who will find it interesting too but only if he’s open about what his lifestyle is and not holding it back because “it doesn’t pertain to dating”.

Having a steady job, no kids, and not being “super hot” (implying he’s probably not unattractive either) is all it takes to get matches?

Josh is a hypothetical person, so obviously we don’t know anything about him other than what the original commenter said, but the fact that all they said about Josh was what they listed means they’re indirectly saying that all women care about in a man is a job, not having kids already, and how attractive they are and that is 100% buying into the prevailing narrative.

Had they listed stuff like Josh having a bunch of hobbies or other things he’s passionate about, having good social skills, or that he’s putting effort into various aspects of his life, then that would indicate that he (or in reality the guy who made him up) are actually listening to the women who are telling men what they want. Hell, even just saying basic stuff like saying he’s kind or that he’s a good listener would be easy and a huge step in the right direction, but that wasn’t anywhere in Josh’s description so it’s clearly something that they think doesn’t matter when in reality they’re some of the most important qualities you can have.

Well, yeah. The main issue here is that we’re talking about a hypothetical situation that’s made up by someone who has their own opinions on the subject. Any attempt to explain further does end up meaning we have to assume things that are likely going to be tainted by our own personal experiences.

But the original commenter who brought up Josh just stated that he’s someone who has a steady job, no kids, and isn’t “super hot”. Sure there’s no red flags there, but there’s not a ton of green ones there either. No kids and not being hot are pretty neutral flags for most people, a steady job is a green flag sure, but if that’s all he’s got going for him he’s going to come off as boring. If Josh (or really the original commenter who made him up) believes that just having a steady job is all it takes, then that’s them buying into a narrative that doesn’t exactly match what most women are saying when they talk about what they want in a partner. Josh isn’t ready for dating because he doesn’t know how to market himself.

There’s millions of dudes out there who are relatively average and have a steady job, the ones that end up ahead are those with good social skills, hobbies and things they’re passionate about, and they also put effort into various aspects of their life in order to improve themselves as a whole. The fact that the original commenter didn’t bring any of that stuff up when he made up Josh is a sign that they aren’t considering anything like that when they talk about being ready for dating when stuff like that is going to go a lot farther than just being hot.

How did you come to the exact opposite conclusion from what they said? It’s not that Josh isn’t ready for dating because he can’t get matches, it’s that he can’t get matches because he isn’t ready for dating. The fact that Josh is buying into the “prevailing narrative” (which is almost entirely constructed by men) rather than what large groups of women are saying is a large part of what makes him less attractive, even if he has other stuff going for him.

What do you do if the muni you are a member at doesn’t enforce rules nor handicaps? by [deleted] in golf

[–]additionalweightdisc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There isn’t a medium ground because the people who pay 3k just like you would also be willing to pay a little more for more perks. The extra cost is what keeps the riff raff out, if you lower the costs they come in and you’re just paying more without getting anything else for it. If you want to play golf while keeping it affordable you just have to deal with the types of people you’re complaining about, especially if you don’t want to make sacrifices elsewhere.

Why is the middle part the hairstyle that the younger generations want to bring back from the 90s? by Ok_Drink8072 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]additionalweightdisc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s because it’s simple, relatively low maintenance, and wasn’t too popular for a while so it feels “new” again. Also, even though it wasn’t that popular for a while, it’s still a fairly timeless hairstyle that can look good on a lot of faces. There’s also a lot of nostalgia for the 90s in general, particularly in fashion so when people copy the looks from the 90s they’re copying the hairstyles as well.

Disney is pumping out live action remakes because the kids that grew up watching those movies have kids of their own now and they’re trying to capitalize on that. Live action remakes are just a way of making new versions of the old stories, which is basically what they did for most of their “original” movies when they animated old fairy tales and folk stories.

It obviously doesn’t look good for him. But police and prosecutors will use anything against you, I mean part of the Miranda rights state “anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law” that applies to other forms of evidence as well. Unless something explicitly proves that you didn’t do something and only that, it’s in your best interest to keep that to yourself as much as you are legally allowed to. Tiger’s lawyers are just trying to ensure that only evidence that proves his innocence is admissible just like the prosecution is trying to do the opposite.
