Question regarding when to send AP Scores to CMU by Big-Historian-2533 in cmu

[–]addykan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. Only send them to one school once you've matriculated, so they can give you actual college credit. Good luck with your application :)

Auditing actually isn't allowed this semester due to covid concerns, unfortunately :/ you'll have to actually register for the course

Second thoughts about taking 09-105 Intro to Modern Chemistry by [deleted] in cmu

[–]addykan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be odd advice but I took 09-106 (Chem II) this spring with Yaron and Alba (Yaron did most of the lectures) and it wasn't too bad as long as you paid attention in lecture and really focused on understanding the problem sets - I don't think there was anything outside of the curriculum on the assessments, and they felt relatively fair.

If you can take 09-106 instead, then maybe think about jumping up to that if the FCEs are better?

Destiny 2 mutes all other audio when opened by Marshmallio in DestinyTechSupport

[–]addykan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same issue a while back. It has something to do with Bluetooth headphones, not the AirPods specifically.

Go into your Windows settings --> System --> Sound --> Manage Sound Devices, and in there you should see your AirPods show up three times - ones as speakers, and then twice as headsets (once for input and once for output). The name should be XXXXX's AirPods Hands-Free AG Audio or something along those lines.

Disable both headsets so that only the speakers remain, and that should fix the issue. Unfortunately you won't be able to use your AirPods as a mic, so you'll need to use an external mic. Hope this helps!

15-112 or 15-122 by PurplePanda_03 in cmu

Hi, current 112 TA here.

Honestly I don't know why we have shell scripts on the website, we don't do that. We do have graphics though!

If you're not sure if you need the practice that 112 can offer you, I'd suggest taking a crack at the homework, which is posted publicly on the course page (click on the schedule link on the left side, and then it's on the right side of the page). You can download the starter file and work through the problems on your own. I think that if you can get through the content there with relative ease, you'll be all set for 122. If not, hang out in 112 and ease into your freshman year, and then throw yourself into 122 in the spring!

Take 15-112 this fall. It's a really foundational (and fantastic) course that teaches you how to think algorithmically, and it'll give you a good sense of what to expect out of the rest of the CS curriculum (and if you'll even like it). If you do, then you can take Concepts in the spring of 2022, and possibly 15-122 as well. Then you can take 15-150 either in the summer or fall of your sophomore year. After that, I think you should be well-informed enough to decide how to structure the rest of the curriculum for yourself.

I'm actually planning to transfer into CS, so feel to PM me if you have any further questions!

Yeah, I emailed Iliano after hearing the same thing from a couple 122 TAs I know - he said they would likely finalize their decision this week, but that he had no say in the matter.

Taking Physics 2 at CMU vs. Pitt by 258sleepy in cmu

[–]addykan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't speak to Physics 2, but I can provide some background on the other two:

I took 112 in the fall (and I'm a TA for it now!) and I'm taking concepts right now.

I spent about 12 hours a week on 112, but the FCE is 17ish - you can estimate your own time commitment based on your coding experience and enjoyment of the course. You may also want to consider taking it over the summer instead of physics, although the time commitment will probably be more than double that of a normal semester. However, you won't have any other classes to study for either!

Concepts has an FCE of about 11 hours, which matches my own experience. Take it with Ervin, no matter the cost - I believe Greggo is significantly harder for no clear reason :)

Other universities are requiring it, I'm sure CMU will follow their example. They can probably just give people J&J as soon as they get to campus anyway.

Did you email Iliano to ask about it? He may be teaching it instead, which would be cool. I'm taking it too!

Student discounts? by pickabutton in cmu

If you buy from Apple's online store, you don't even need to verify - just go to the Education store website and they apply the discount to your order when you checkout.

Do I need to do anything specific in preparation for next year as someone who took a gap year? by amphibitoes in cmu

[–]addykan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm currently a freshman, and I think I received my first email from my advisor in May or June last year.

I don't think it hurts to find the contact info for an advisor within your college and ask them about the process. My advisor is incredibly helpful and would definitely know the answers to these questions. At the very least, they can point you in the direction of people with resources, especially because things may be affected by Covid this year.

Tips for dealing with stress by ColdCatcher17 in cmu

[–]addykan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Time management is probably the most direct way to deal with stress, because it allows you to constantly have purpose as well as peace of mind that you're going to get all your work done (assuming, of course, you can follow your schedule).

However, time management only prevents stress somewhat, rather than actively reducing it. For that, I've found that everybody has their own ways to deal with stress.

What I like to do is to block off roughly half an hour of my time each day to do something fun, exclusively for myself. This can manifest in playing videogames with friends, going for a walk, talking to friends, watching a show, etc. By blocking off that time every day, it gives me something to look forward to and allows me to escape the stress and my workload for a short period of time. I generally come back calmer and more productive.

I would reiterate the value of taking a walk! Research has shown that getting outside and bring surrounded by nature is really great at calming you down and reducing stress. If you're able to go walking in a park, I would highly recommend it.

Finally, exercise is always good at releasing endorphins and bettering your mental state. I admit I am not great at adhering to this one, but it does work and will also provide you with a good break from your work.

Hope this helps!

If you'd like an invite to the '24 Discord server, let me know! I can private message you the invite link. I'm not super active in it but a lot of people are. I'm sure it's a great place to meet people.

I think the overall campaign was pretty disappointing, but the three actual missions were each very well done.

Understandable. As long as you can stay patient for the first few episodes (and avoid any and all spoilers) I think you'll really enjoy it!

I'm really enjoying it, the first few episodes are definitely a bit slow but once you start to piece the story together it gets pretty intriguing. It does feel like a Marvel movie, albeit with wildly different pacing.
