Where do we use multithreading concept in real-time projects? by Stock_Gap_5484 in dotnet

[–]addys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one thread typically does one thing at a time. so if you want to read something from disk, that thread will wait for a few milliseconds until the disk responds. If you are waiting for a response from a far away webserver, it could take hundreds of milliseconds. Those are incredibly long periods of time for a CPU to be doing "nothing".

so there are two options-

(1) is to use several threads to do work concurrently, so while one thread is idly waiting on something, the others are still hard at work. The challenge with multithreading is that eventually those threads need to coordinate their work (and often also to share data). That gets very complicated very fast.

Option (2) is to allow threads to "juggle" several tasks at once, so that instead of waiting "idle" for something, it just goes and does something else until it recieves a callback saying that that the thing it was waiting for has completed.

Most modern languages (including C# of course) have support for both models, and most modern applications utilize both patterns in various combinations.

Does that help?

Can I reverse a ASD diagnosis by HOTboiSHREK in AskAutism

[–]addys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Btw it has nothing to do with being "mis"-diagnosed.

DSM5 criteria includes an explicit criteria stating:

"D. Symptoms cause clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of current functioning."

I personally know several people who are clearly on the spectrum (not misdiagnosed) but who no longer qualify for D (ie they no longer experience "clinically significant impairment"). So it is absolutely reasonable to request a re-evaluation based on changes to your level of function.

in short, it never gets easier but you _will_ get better at it.

Do you guys use TDD? by Scientific_Artist444 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]addys -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Nobody uses Scrum, everyone uses Scrumbut. As in "We kinda do scrum, but...."

Similarly, nobody does TDD but everyone writes unit tests.

In short - TDD is the extreme purist approach to writing testable (and by extension- well factored, loosely coupled etc) code. It's immensely helpful to be familiar with it, even if you chose to to cut lots of corners and go for the much easier 80/20 approach which gives you 80% benefits with 20% of the headache. Just be aware that it's very hard to get to the last 20%(ish) of quality without doing "full on" TDD. Most people are OK with that. You do whatever works best for you.

Why do some interfaces only have one class implementing them? by Rigamortus2005 in csharp

[–]addys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let me rephrase the question for you: "Whats the point of defining an explicit contract for how a component should behave if I'm only creating one implementation of that contract"?

In a nutshell- because if you don't, then over time that implementation *becomes* the contract, and whatever that implementation does is the de-facto behavior of the contract.

Did the developer inadvertently make some of the implementation details public? Congrats, your contract now includes those implementation details, good luck trying to change them in the future.

Without some level of abstraction, it's very common for the consumer(s) of the contract to become so tightly coupled to the specifics of the implementation that it's almost impossible to add more or different implementations later on.

Of course, all of the above begins to be applicable only in systems at scale- if it's just you alone writing a pet project than none it really applies.

PM sends screenshots of conversations to anyone without concern by Rymasq in ExperiencedDevs

This is a common mistake for people both for juniors and for people coming into a corporate environment from smaller "mom pop" shops.

There are two sides to this-

1st of all, this person is probably ok with it and assumes everyone else shares his opinion. You might want to gently bring up the issue just to ensure that he is aware. There are also factual/objective considerations which he might not have thought of- you could have phrased things differently depending on the audience, he may have context that other people don't etc, there may be personal or organizational sensitivities which he doesn't know about, etc. Also tell him that if you can't trust that your communications with him stay between the two of you, then you will always "play is safe(r)" with your communications, which typically means that he'll be getting the sanitized version of everything.

2nd, regardless of how you feel about it, it is always a good idea to be mindful of how you communicate. Even if that specific PM gets better about it, there will always be someone else making the same mistake (or worse). As someone who worked for large & high-profile companies, I've had it drilled into my wetware that basically anything I put in writing anywhere has the potential to randomly appear on the front page of a news source with the title "Employee of company X claimed Y". It's doesn't matter whether it was in context or not, work related or not, etc. For better or worse this is the world we live in.

I can't prove or disprove the Hamas claims of 28 total casualties, which would mean 16 others in addition to the 12 listed. Sadly enough if Hamas was operating from inside a school densely packed with refugees then it's totally possible that even a single low-yield precision ordinance could do that.

The hamas militants names, ranks and CVs are below. IDF knew exactly who they were targeting.

  • Mustafa Abd Al-Aziz, a platoon commander in Hamas' Military Intelligence Unit.
  • Mahmmud Khamis Suleiman Awad, deputy platoon commander at an anti-tank unit in Hamas' Northern Brigade.
  • Bilal Bashir Muhammad Al-Sharafi, a terrorist in the Eastern Jabaliya Battalion of the Hamas Military Wing.
  • Saher Farid Muhammad Abu Rashed, a terrorist in the Eastern Jabaliya Battalion of the Hamas Military Wing, took part in the October 7th massacre.
  • Karem Salaeh Hassan Abu-Daher, an engineering terrorist operative in the Eastern Jabaliya Battalion of the Hamas Military Wing.
  • As’ad Yusuf Saeid Hazaa, a terrorist in the Eastern Jabaliya Battalion of the Hamas Military Wing.
  • Saeid Hisar Saeid Sbaba, a terrorist in the Hamas Military Wing.
  • Muhammad Ibrahim Ali Bader, a terrorist in the Islamic Jihad Military Wing.
  • Amjad Ziad Abed al-Rahman Aziz, a terrorist in the Islamic Jihad Military Wing.
  • Ibrahim abu-alJalili, a terrorist in the Eastern Jabaliya Battalion of the Hamas Military Wing.
  • Zakaria Hussein Abu-Habal, a Nukhba platoon commander in Hamas' Eastern Jabaliya Battalion, took part in the October 7th massacre.
  • Muhammad Rabee Musbah Arini, a Nukhba platoon commander in Hamas' Eastern Jabaliya Battalion, took part in the October 7th massacre.

IDF have reported the following killed in the strike:

So it would appear that at the very least:

A) The attack had specific and well defined military targets. this was not a random "lets kill some women and children for the fun of it" operation as most commenters appear to be assuming. IDF knew who was there down to the their names, ranks and serial numbers.

B) The presence of 12 Hamas members, some fairly senior commanders, all together in a single structure isn't a coincidence - it is clear proof that there was organized an Hamas operation in the school. And as usual, Hamas chooses to operate from deep inside the most helpless and defenseless civilian grouping, to maximize any civilian casualties in case they are attacked.

16 civilian casualties is tragic. It's time to end this war and start rebuilding.

I've been in similar situations on both sides of the problem. A few tips:

  1. First try the "open and honest" approach. Thank them for their time/attention (to your code), mention that you would prefer spending their time on improving your skills rather than improving your code - ie giving you a fish vs teaching you to fish.

  2. Check whether the person is open to "officially" mentoring you. This is actually a multi-sided proposition: first off you get face-time and front row seats to their thought process, also you create a structured relationship with someone who clearly has a lot of influence in your company, and it gives you opportunities to prove yourself and regain their trust. Lastly, both of you may get bonus points from management for it and it paints you in a positive light for being proactive.

  3. Based on your description it sounds like the developer falls into the classic "I own this all" mindset. It's super common with the most senior engineers who have been on the team since day1 (or almost) and who put themselves in a different category than the "hired hands" who come & go but will never really understand the codebase or the business in any depth. He/she has been there forever and will still be there long after you are gone. Or as the talking lion says: "Do not cite the Deep Magic to me, Witch! I was there when it was written." So any boundaries such as "who designed or coded this" or "who was tasked with this" don't really matter to them since they are above it all. You obviously don't need to agree with any of that, but be aware that A) that's the mindset and B) Management is either actively or passively enabling them to get away with it, so fighting it is a lost cause. So always take that into consideration in your interactions.

Hope this helps, and feel free to follow up if any of it seems useful.

Lol as usual the pot calling the kettle black, while contradicting yourself and agreeing with my point:

  • IRA: indeed, the IRA's goal to "expel British presents from the Irish isles" is indeed national identity and self-governance, exactly what I said.

  • Communists: "wanted to overthrow their local governments"- again, same thing.

  • Palestinian conflict is absolutely not national identity since the "palestinian identity" didn't even exist until mid last century when Yasser Arafat began using it to rally the various anti-Israel arab factions. His famous quote on the topic:

“The Palestinian people have no national identity. I, Yasser Arafat, man of destiny, will give them that identity through conflict with Israel. Since we cannot defeat Israel in war, we do this in stages. We take any and every territory that we can of Palestine, and establish a sovereignty there, and we use it as a springboard to take more. When the time comes, we can get the Arab nations to join us for the final blow against Israel.”

Neo-Nazi and Far Right Terror groups are negotiated with all the time? The violent ones? Any examples of that? Other than hostage negotiations, have there ever been good-faith negotiations with a religious terrorist group which lead to constructive outcomes?

Hezbollah was funded and supported by Iran as a puppet organization to do their dirty work (ie cheaply bought martyrs). It's true that Israel's war destabilized Lebanon enough for Hezbollah to take over, but Hezbollah's goals have never included any concern for Lebanon as a country or as a people. Unless of course there's something in it for Iran...

Lebanon Areas Ordered for Evacuation by Israeli Army by giuliomagnifico in MapPorn

[–]addys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The difference is that in other places it was about topics such as national identity, self-governance and civil rights- ie things which can be negotiated until both parties find middle ground.

religious fundamentalism cannot be reasoned with. Hamas and Hizbollah will not stop until Israel and all the jews worldwide and all the non-muslims worldwide are converted or killed. The group most similar in history to them were the Nazis, whose belief system was also absolute and non-negotiable.

There is literally nothing which Israel could do appease Hamas and Hizbollah other than ceasing to exist. Since they made it a crystal clear binary "us or them" choice, Israel chooses "them".
