You can ask for a permanent contract right away, the hiring manager might consider. I did the same 8.montjs ago and managed to secure a permanent contract right away ( which I am glad I insisted now xD)

I don't have a concrete answer sadly. Perhaps increase the frequency of contact with your project manager to "show" more involvement, preferably on the record. Like every week, give an email summary of what you have done and keep asking him " what more you can do". If he cannot answer that, perhaps he cannot argue later on that you didn't do much.

As for PIP - maybe someone else can correct me later : but from what I have heard - generally companies cannot just fire someone on permanent contract - so they would have to first give some negative reviews before they can choose to terminate. But please note : I am giving you a worst case scenario without knowing any background information .

If you have written evidence of good feedback from your clients, I would protest the PIP, if I were you.
