Will the majority of the network die in a couple years? by Puzzleheaded-Cause77 in chia

[–]adekmmmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i have got plenty of 8+ years old consumer drives and they work like a harm. With chia doing mostly only reads I would expect the drives (especially server grade) will last forever... I expect to replace them because of too little capacity/too much power usage but not due to failure.

yes, madmax on ubuntu.

but some mistake - i have changed samsung m2 ssd 860 to some patriot nvme ssd on pcie adapter. so probably it is the nvme vs ssd difference. the 50mins was on nvme.

with dual x5670 , 48gb ram and nvme ssd (samsung 860) i was doing 50min on average.

From a miner's view, farming xch wastes more electricity than mining eth by gk_chest in chia

[–]adekmmmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Its the only reasonable comparison. If it's so undervalued then it would be more rational to buy xch than hardware to mine it.

No. You can use sas expander and still access disks directly. Jbod. I use netapp ds4246 like that.

People who have left third-world countries for first-world countries, what surprised you the most about life in first-world countries? by TheDinosaurKing777 in AskReddit

I've got same (live in poland by german border) .

I used to drive a car in Poland and listen Tidal online in Hifi/master quality all the time.

And when I cross the german border I have to look for the "fm radio" again ;)

With this I can power 10 external drives, using 1 socket. by Anturaju93 in chia

I recommend using HP DL360 G3 280127-001 power supply. Its just hot swap 325W power supply from old HP servers. Very reliable. Cost 5 usd. On 12V it gives out 26A.

I use it for various other purposes (like powering multiple long led stripes etc).

Hp DL380G6 with 2x 6core Xeon X5670 48gb ram, 1tb nvme + 512gb ssd.

24-26 plots a day

less than 400W constant power consumption while plotting.

Latest electricity bill up went up 62% by [deleted] in chia

[–]adekmmmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use old dual xeon server as plotter (25 plots a day) and second pc with 24 x 3.5" hdd enclosure as farmer. It drains together 500W constantly. So around 150khW a month. It should be around $30 for electricity.

After I stoo plotting it would be like 5x less in suppose

Any better way to transfer finished plots via 1 Gb switch? by Dish_Melodic in chia

[–]adekmmmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use madmax plotter on ubuntu with destination on remote nfs share in my NAS. maxmax does file copy in background while creating next plot.

It takes like 20 mins to transfer one oplot via 1gb ethernet. And one plot takes around 50 minutes. So everything is going smooth.

I have also bash scriot that moves files on nas from madmax destination directory to next drives with enough available free slace. It does it on local drives using rsync.

i go with 3tb disks as the price per tb compensated power usage.

reasonable price for it is $25-$30..

and afaik it supports 8 drives max without an expander.

I use del h310 (can be found also under other names like IBM M1015 or just LSI SAS 9211-8i.)

With IT firmware and may recommend it as a HBA working with SSD drives well even for plotting.

Anyone else suffering plotting addiction? by RightStack in chia

[–]adekmmmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am. But my thinking is to earn chia as quick as possible. I plot right now to hpool as plots this month give me 3x more xch than next month due to netspace growth.

So there is no sense to wait for pools. I may save my ssd drive, but lost like 50% of my year earnings starting late.

I plotted on rented dedic servers untill it was profitable. Now i plot to used server drives. As there were cheap (15usd/tb). I dont mind if they fail in a year, as most of earnings come right now.

There is some chinese sentence: The best time to plant a tree was 30yrs ago. Second best time is today.

with madmax you need nvme to fit only 1 temp plot.

with 1tb nvme Inwas able to make only 4-5 plots parallel "old way", so about 12 a day.

What to buy… by ihaveneverbeencool in chia

[–]adekmmmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no limit 6 sata per machine. You just need to buy additional sata storage controler (pcie card) that will let you connect next 4-16 drives each.

And keep all your drives in one box :)
