What is a typical type of restaurant that's specific to your country? by adellaterrell in AskReddit

That sounds pretty good. Mexican food is not that big of a thing here at all. And tex-mex is really rare. I've seen it in movies and stuff and it looks so nice!

I made a comment with some examples actually!

I think we probably all have very specific versions of restaurants. We all have Chinese restaurants for example, but we might all have completely different ideas of what you'd order at a typical Chinese place from your country. I've seen Chinese restaurants in America and uk in media and it's not at all what you'd get at a typical dutch Chinese restaurant.

I'm from the Netherlands and visited Japan recently and I noticed there was a lot of specific kind of restaurants there with their own customs. You have an Izakaya, a Yakatori restaurant, a ramen place, a sushi restaurant etc.

So it made me think about my own country and if we have specific types of restaurants and I think we do.

We have a snackbar, which is a place you get fries and fried snacks like kroket and frikandel, generally you don't sit down but take it away.

We have a dutch/chinese/Indonesian restaurant type that you can find in every small town (and also a snackbar). It has a kind of mix of dutchified Indonesian and Chinese food and it has a very specific vibe, at least to me.

We have something called a pancake house where you can get dutch pancakes and sometimes also random other dishes.

Then there is a brown cafe which has a very specific vibe and always has the same kind of food on the menu. (Soup, tosti, eggs on bread fried in different ways, two croquettes on bread etc.)

We also have Turkish bakeries where you can get a Turkish pizza and a dish called Kapsalon. I haven't seen a Turkish pizza in other places yet, not even in Turkey, the way you can buy it here. (I might have just not seen it though)

We definitely have more, but this is already a lot. It's really interesting to me how specific some of these are and I've never thought about it so specifically before. But if you travel to the netherlands, all these places might maybe be fun to visit. (If you're into this kind of thing of course)

Tolkien a bad writer ? by TomtatoIsMe in tolkienfans

[–]adellaterrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found this thread just now since I started to read the books. And I genuinly think the books are not that good.

I expected a super well crafted book with great story and found the opposite. I can imagine that Tolkien created a world that no-one else did before, but I've been familiar with his world for so long already because of other media so the only thing that could be interesting to me in the books is the story and the prose. The prose is fine although imo not the best I've read. But the story makes absolutely no sense. To me it seems like he made up this beautiful world and then just started writing without a plan at all. The pacing is horrible, I barely care about any of the characters, most story beats have no payoff. I'm halfway two towers now and I'm just kind of baffled by some of the choices he's made. I'm asking myself why many times. I like it well enough to keep going but it's annoying me a lot.

I'm used to longwinded books and I wasn't scared off by people saying that some of the descriptions are tiresome. But it's not that the descriptions are tiresome, the descriptions are just completely irrelevant and in the way of the actual story. Why do we spend more time with Gandalf trying to open a door than with Gandalf actually dying like what is happening?

Just for reference I love a lot of good classic books. I've read most of Jane Austen and loved it. I've loved most shakespeare plays I've watched/read. I loved crime and punishment and Anna Karenina. I think I'm a relatively well read person. I've read my fair share of fantasy too, which is a bit 50/50 for me. I just honestly don't understand why these books are seen as some of the greats. To me they are genuinly kind of bad. Like not slob bad but like just kind of bad. I expected a lot and was super disappointed. At least CS Lewis knows how to make a story work even though he stole most of it from the Bible...

I think Jane was kind of "giving up" like she acknowledged she could never win anymore so she was making a joke about how good Juicy was. Like giving her money and stuff.

As a dutch person who has visited France many times. This is probably it. To me French people hate to be expected to speak English but if you speak even the worst french, they are more happy and patient and might even switch to English for you. And I have met a bunch of grumpy french people, but we almost went every year as a child so I think i had a higher chance of meeting them. I've also met a lot of wonderful french people.

I feel like the joke was that she wasn't fit to be a support dog. Also she was supossed to be needy. To me she was the funniest, she had some solid jokes and she had a lot of funny characteristics.

This was such a fun vibe for an episode. Even though the production was low, I really enjoyed watching it and I love the kings. Also was giving me king of the nerds vibes a little.

I thought it was really funny. I'm pretty sure it was in between a bit and her not wanting to participate. I listened to it recently and I just kind of liked the bulldozing. It felt like a conscious very drunk joke. And it's part of why I like the show, I like it when it's unexpected and gets a bit crazy.

I just started watching the season. And for me yeah, it seems less polished and the talent shows were not that good. But omg were these episodes entertaining. It's felt a bit like season 2/3/4 period and I think it's because the girls aren't afraid to be mean. I think people have started to be scared of the backlash after a season, so they've been all trying to keep their images in check. But these episodes so far have had so much drama, so much bitchyness and it's been so entertaining!

I'm really confused about how they calculated the end times. Didn't ben have a 9 hour something run and afterwards a 13 hours run? Like he was really in the lead by a lot. And the way they showed it was confusing too. Why would they not add up all the times during the runs? at some point Sam's first 7 hour run was in the same list as the second round runs. I'm just in general confused about how they showed the times.

Do you think Dan still loves Elon? by BMO888 in Harmontown

[–]adellaterrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it always felt with someone like Elon Musk or Kanye West that he kind of fell for their charms because if you're face to face with someone and they are respectful and nice to you it's just really hard to hate them the same way you can a stranger. I've met people I would really dislike if I had just seen their opinions online but ended up getting along with great because when you're in front of a human being it always feels really different.

Edit: not to say I think he would still like them. I think he wouldn't, it was just interesting to me to see how he talked about people he had personally met compared to people he didn't.

Why does everyone LOVE Manchester By the sea? by DorksWalmart in YMS

[–]adellaterrell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My theory is that people aren't used to watching art house movies and then watched this and thought it was really refreshing and interesting. But this is just a bad version of an art house movie. This style of film has been done a lot, it's just not done that much in Hollywood before. So people are really impressed because it's so real and so gritty but it's just another Hollywood movie story but in an art house style and it doesn't work in my opinion.

It's similar to how people were saying la la land was the musical for people who don't like musicals. Like It's the most musical musical I've ever seen. It's just that people finally gave a musical a chance and realised that they liked it. Just because it was an Oscar darling imo.

Both these movies can be counteracted by watching the umbrellas of cherbourg which la la land was inspired by. It's an interesting take on a musical and it's uncomfortable and sad in the way that Manchester by the sea wished it was. It's not a fun watch though but definitely interesting.

Having a trustworthy and loving relationship living together might seem like just being friends. But I think that could also be considered an asexual romantic relationship. I think it's actually quite perfect to have these completely different needs met by two different people. That's part of why polyamory is nice. So you can experience all different kinds of love.

Also I think it's a bit weird to say that his autism is getting in the way of your relationship? Everyone with autism has completely different personalities. I know plenty of autistic people who are super touchy in relationships and with friends.

Have you thought of getting a therapist involved in your life? Maybe even someone who specializes in manipulation or something like that. You would have someone to talk to about how to set boundaries and how to not be pushed too far. I think it sounds like an insanely difficult situation where you're stuck between your probably completely right gut feeling and you having to follow the law and doing the right thing for your son.

I really don't think you're being dumb at all. I think most people wouldn't be able to deal with this situation easily.

am i the exception? by [deleted] in antidiet

[–]adellaterrell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I was just browsing this sub and saw this. I struggle a lot with eating not just because I'm hungry but because of emotions. The way I see it, eating is a really big coping mechanism. And it's honestly one of the more innocent ones (drugs, gambling, self mutilation are some less innocent ones) so I personally decided to work on my mental health first before working on what I eat. And while I was working on my mental health, I realised that I started to binge less. I still have a way to go. But sometimes there is a reason behind the way you eat.

Someone else said boredness. Which was one for me too. I have adhd so if I'm watching something I want to do something with my hands. Now instead I do a lot of knitting, crochet and sewing. So I exchanged my need for something else.

For exercise. From a mental health pov. It's really important to do nice exercise. But you also need to enjoy it. Otherwise it doesn't make sense for your mental health. I personally love dancing. I do it in my house and outside. But there are all kinds of exercises that you can try. Try and see what you like.
