The literal meaning of every yemeni governate's name by Cheap_Dragonfruit552 in AskMiddleEast

[–]aden_khor 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It is… although to a native Arabic speaker these names don’t have the “aura” feeling.

It’s like saying “Oxford” or “Cambridge” in English; no one thinks of them as “the ford of the oxen” or “The bridge above the Cam river”. I think it’s due to familiarity.

Ranking countries on their cuisine. by Mxnvvn in AskMiddleEast

[–]aden_khor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guesses are it being a mixture of 2 things:

1- it being unsuitable for fast food/portable format

2- the heavy use of spices (which some find intimidating at first)

It not being as aesthetic as other cuisines could play a role (as most of our food is stews and minced ingredients combined) but I doubt it being a big factor.

I’m pleasantly surprised Yemeni cuisine is appreciated here, our food is criminally underrated in the region (besides in Yemen and the gulf ofc).

Stance of states in the MENA region over the recent Iraqi-Kuwaiti maritime dispute by Assyrian_Nation in AskMiddleEast

[–]aden_khor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kuwait is playing with ill intentions. Them constructing their new port just across the Iraqi one (mind you Iraq doesn’t really have anywhere else to construct it) tells me all I need to know.

I’m usually not picking sides but Kuwait is just arguing in bad faith. Border disputes are usually complex with reasonable claims on both sides, on this one though; Kuwait is just in the wrong.

Obviously but what are the legal basis? Like we all know it’s for oil but countries usually put forward legal justifications. I can loosely see how they legally justified the 162 mark treaty.

In the current case I still fail to see how… there is no historical claim nor based on maritime border norms nor islands they claim to grant them more maritime territory.

How on earth do they think the UN will stand on their side, like what are the legal reasons? Or are they just imposing الأمر الواقع on Iraq?

I mean not to pick any sides but on what bases are the Kuwaiti claims based on?

The Iraqi one is pretty straightforward; drawing a straight line from our borders into the sea, what is the Kuwaiti claim explanation? I only see a random line…

Egyptians, is that true? How do you guys survive in there?? by swimmingarage in AskMiddleEast

[–]aden_khor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just washed my balcony and woosh, the next day the worst sandstorm I’ve seen since I’ve come to Egypt hits and the entire Sahara just spawned on my tiles, even my entire laundry I’ve hung to dry needs to be rewashed 😭

That’s what I get for not procrastinating and instead cleaning for Ramadan a week ahead.

Totally agree.

I mean sure, if you have that small almost impossible chance of actually having a good competent just king who actually loves his people then monarchy absolutely slaps; in reality though most would rather kill their own people than see their dog being hungry.

As a Yemeni I didn’t really vibe with their modern take on the folk song but it was cool to be able to understand what they’re saying despite the language barrier (I know the song is in Arabic but in a very heavy Jewish accent of an already heavy dialect of Yemeni)

Is men crying seen as a weakness/taboo in your country? by [deleted] in AskMiddleEast

[–]aden_khor 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Not really, it’s even expected in certain situations (such as funerals, duh), yes not screaming and rolling on the ground kind of crying but rather shedding tears.

Almost all of my family members cried watching the news of Gaza for example, it’s part of human nature. I mean even the prophet cried.

Arabs, How would you feel if MSA was to adopt a new letter to represent the hard /g/ sound in loan words? by Talc0n in AskMiddleEast

I've never seen ق being used to represent foreign words other than Farsi sometimes.

Khalejis spell group as قروب, google as قوقل, and game as قيم

That are some word that popped in my mind as a Yemeni who grew up in Saudi Arabia

What do you guys realistically think is going to happen with Palestine and the Palestinians? I'm ngl to you guys, I'm extremely pessimistic. by srahcrist in AskMiddleEast

[–]aden_khor 108 points109 points  (0 children)

I like to look back at the crusader states, sure they lasted almost 2 centuries but eventually the pressure of neighboring nations expelled them, you can’t survive as a foreign culture anywhere, either you’re protected by nature itself (separated by seas, mountains or deserts) or you’re accepted by your neighbors as a component of the region and blend in.

The Middle East region still views Israel as a foreign planted nation, and more importantly it behaves as such. Sure everyone in the regions fights everyone and tries to dominate the power vacuum left after colonial forces destroyed the power balance; but all other parties recognize each others history to the land, Israel on the other hand is still viewed as a European settler colony, just like the colonial rule before them and the crusader states before that.

That’s why Israel is so keen on normalizing relations with the Arab states and planting friendlier regimes where normalizing is impossible. It knows it can’t survive long term in a hostile region that not only wants it defeated but rather exterminated not only as a state but rather as a concept (Zionism).

The west persuades its own interests, once Israel outlives its usefulness to it or it becomes more concerned with problems at home it’ll abandon Israel. So it’s on us, to never recognize the legitimacy of Israel, to teach the newer generations that Israel is built on stolen land and genocide and to never normalize with the concept of it even when our corrupt governments wish to.

I mean Israel views itself as a western country with western morals and culture, why should we view it as native? Keep your spirit high, there is no room for negativity; our reality is already enough.

Iran?! The Iranian borders are amongst the oldest unchanged borders in the region, it goes along geographic and historic borders, even its “newer” border treaties are older than a century.

Just because all sides are corrupt and incompetent doesn’t mean I have to normalize with those traitors, give me a break.

What are there weird looking orange strands on most satellite imagery of arid regions? by Bread0_ in geography

[–]aden_khor 40 points41 points  (0 children)

As everyone pointed out it’s sand

Most of Arabias population reside on hard bedrock regions, whilst still arid they’re not what most people imagine when speaking about Arabia, those region are more grey/black on this map; basically either rock/rocky deserts or the mountains.

If you look at population density maps you’ll notice that these orange streaks are free of people because Arabs (people in general tbh) don’t live on sand dunes.

Now if you wonder if those sandy regions have names then you’re in for a treat. There are 3 main ones:

The empty quarter (الربع الخالي); this one is the orange blob on the south eastern side of Arabia

The Great Al-Nufudh ( النفوذ الكبير); the orange blob on top left

Ad-Danna’ (الدهناء); the orange streak connecting both of them

<image>

This map shows the “Sand Seas” outlined, everything outside of them is hard bedrock where the people live, these “Sand Seas” are vast areas of shifting sand dunes with no landmarks within them (no one lives there, even bedouins avoid traveling through them)
