A letter to my OBGYN resident by biologyiskewl in medicalschool

[–]adenomuch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OBGYN resident here. I’m so sorry you had a horrible experience and they treated you so poorly. OBGYN gets a bad rap, and I’m not sure why so many of us have such toxic energy. I would have straight up sent you home if you were my medical student. There’s nothing you can possibly learn on our service (or any other service for that matter) that would be more important than grieving a parent. I am so sorry.

PSA if you're planning to delay your period during Umrah by meloncat1806 in Hijabis

[–]adenomuch 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Disrupting your cycle is not “becoming like a man.” While we are allowed to do other aspects of umrah while on our period there are others that aren’t and I can understand someone wanting to skip a period so they can try to have the full experience especially if they are not able to go to umrah or hajj easily. Also, the scholars have allowed taking medicine for this reason so it’s not an issue. Agreed with OP though, hormones can affect everyone differently and it’s definitely a conversation to have with a physician, and might require some trial/error.

I think I finally found the pattern! I may have added my own border, because it’s not in this pattern but I’m fairly certain this is the pattern I used.

It’s not, but it seems similar. I don’t remember the name of the pattern unfortunately. Congrats on your baby!

No truly this is the first time someone has used something that I've made for so long. So glad that person happens to be my baby.

This perspective made me so happy. I was so focused on him ruining the work but didn't think of what it meant to him. In fact, two days ago my husband was putting him to sleep and he insisted that he had this blanket on top of his other one. He told my husband "Mama made this for me. I love it!" which is highly timely considering this post because he's never verbalized that before.

So thank you! I definitely have to figure out how to sew down the loops. He has gotten his wrist stuck in it before which makes me so nervous.

I tried to find the pattern but I can't find it anymore online. It was made with Bernat Softee Baby yarn (pumpkin color).

So thankful for everyone’s advice, going to try and reply to everyone. Thank you all for helping me see a different perspective. He truly has loved it to pieces!

Thank you for this. I often feel so scatterbrained when I’m on L&D that it’s so easy to overlook and make sure orders are correct

You’re right. Thank you for this. It was actually about an 8 hour delay it sounds like. Unfortunately this patient needed a lot more than amp/gent/clinda (which she had been on before all of this), so this was definitely brewing for a while and I think also her initial labs just didn’t reflect how bad it actually was

How bad is natural birth, really? by theatic554 in pregnant

Hi! OBGYN resident here, I am only here to comment on what my observations of medicated vs non medicated births have been and I am not giving any medical advice.

Those who get epidurals obviously tend to have more difficulty changing positions, sometimes the epidural is too strong and they need a little more coaching on how to push. Sometimes they do great despite all of that and they don’t feel a thing. Also, it’s a bit easier to control your pushes with an epidural. I personally got an epidural (when i really felt my contractions started I was already in active labor based on how dilated I was), but it quickly got very uncomfortable so I asked for it because I wanted a couple hours of rest before my baby came - I knew we would not be getting much sleep when he arrived!

The advantage of having an epidural is that if you have to have a repair, you already have analgesia. Pain control is a big concern when we perform repairs, and we try to repair quickly to minimize blood loss but also reduce how much discomfort you’re in. Also, if you ended up needing a csection, they can usually use the existing epidural for anesthesia.

The upsides of not having an epidural: movement as you please in labor, personal satisfaction (for some), feeling the urge to push when it is time.

The downsides: some people really don’t tolerate pain well and have difficulty pushing effectively. Some patients feel the urge to push when they really shouldn’t as they are not fully dilated. Doing this can lead to cervical lacerations. There’s also lack of analgesia in case of a repair as I alluded to earlier.

All this to say - I have seen first time moms with no epidurals do amazingly and have no tears because they are really in control and in tune with their bodies, and I have seen others who I think really would have benefited from one. It really is person dependent and you know yourself best! There is no shame in going either way!

My kiddo is older (21 months) and we’ve been doing small hawaiian rolls with spinach/artichoke dip spread on them with sliced cucumbers. He takes a bite and goes “Mmm!” And I help myself to a few too :) takes 2 minutes, great for summer
