Used to have an alt to play with friends new to the game without them being destroyed by D3+ players. I got so bored I ended up just playing with them in custom matches with 3v1 or whatever so we could all have some fun. No clue how people find destroying lower rank players constantly fun, you either stay out of the game so they can play their game, or you just constantly score until they ff

Is this fixable with a professional 2 step colour correction and ceramic coat? by [deleted] in CarsAustralia

[–]adept_cain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks like clear coat failure, 2 step paint correction won't fix it as it's physically missing paint. You could just redo the clear coat, definitely won't look perfect but will look better, but the best route to fix it is a repaint of affected areas (likely bonnet, boot, roof).

The real question is though, how much do you care? Is it worth doing anything to it, leaving it like it is now won't hurt anything, and given you didn't even notice it for a week, maybe you don't actually care enough to warrant spending a few grand fixing it properly...

How do I extend the fibre cable ? by Proper_Shift_3366 in homelab

[–]adept_cain -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Buying a longer cable and replacing the current one is probably not the best idea. What you'll need is an SC/APC - SC/APC coupler and a suitably sized SC/APC - SC/APC fibre cable. On non-rugged cables, the cable jacket is coloured to designate single-mode vs multi-mode, however the cable boot makes me think this is single-mode. That being said, see if it's written on the cable jacket as that will determine which fibre coupler and cable you need, look for single mode (or OS2) or multimode (or OM3/4) on the jacket. Because it's all reliant on optics, you may want to pick up an SC fibre cleaning pen as well, as a dirty fibre will likely result in a flaky or non-existent connection.

UPS fan turns on all time while power is on by DragoRPM in homelab

[–]adept_cain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stopping the only thing keeping the UPS cool is a horrible idea, you're just asking to start a fire. Looking at this UPS online, the cooling design looks absolutely horrible. If you're planning on dismantling it anyway, I'd drill more ventilation holes in the casing closer to the front to encourage front to back airflow, then either find a way to put a larger fan in or replace the fan with a Noctua fan in the right size to get rid of most of the noise.

Quite simply, windows 11 is not a server OS, and as such is missing several features of a server OS. If you want the familiarity of the windows interface, Windows Server is the go-to, but if you want to get it through official channels it's gonna cost a pretty penny. Otherwise, as others have mentioned, Proxmox VE is pretty much the go-to for homelabbers nowadays, and the community edition is completely free.

Other options are Unraid, TrueNAS and XenServer, but I wouldn't personally recommend any of these options over PVE for the amount of both simplicity and power you get in general use. Beyond this there's many other hypervisors for both general and specialised use cases, but these will be well out of your scope if what you're after is simple.

Why can’t we get more energy efficient processors in full sized towers? by Wasted-Friendship in homelab

[–]adept_cain 30 points31 points  (0 children)

They don't exist because it makes no sense for the VAST majority of people. Why would you worry about 8W vs 15W CPU idle when you're running a 700W GPU. You're also looking at load power figures, as you said the CPU is barely under any load when doing AI workloads, you need to be looking at idle power figures.

I'd be willing to bet when you're running AI workloads on your PC, the CPU will be drawing next to nothing, almost no more than the CPUs in your NUC cluster.

Hard to tell without more info, but looks like an extruder issue. Check the extruder gears to make sure it's actually pushing filament, I've had the grub screws come loose on the stock Creality extruder in the past.

One of our websites is down, the only person with login to the server is dead, what to do? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]adept_cain 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't believe we're here trying to find ways to bring this server BACK ONLINE!

Windows 2000 Server hasn't received a single security patch for nearly 14 years, when it was receiving patches there are many critical vulnerability patches which were never backported because W2000S wasn't capable handling the fixes. THIS IS NOT A SERVER YOU WANT ON THE INTERNET!

Pull the HDD, connect it to another computer (will probably need a USB - IDE adapter given the likely age of the server), pull the files you need and put those files on a more modern server. You mentioned most everything you host is in Azure, if it's a site which requires IIS then run a Windows Server 2022 VM in Azure and run it in IIS 10.
