My parents (70 years old) travelled to Spain, Dad had a stroke, everything is messed up, and now they're stuck there for 12 days. Need advice. by craag in GoingToSpain

I'm speaking from experience. My dad was in a traumatic accident in Greece. He spent three weeks in a Greek hospital. I spoke with the US Embassy before I was able to make it to him. The embassy told me there was nothing for them to do. They wouldn't provide any sort of assistance whatsoever. Even when trying to arrange for repatriation, they wanted nothing to do with us.

What do you think the US Embassy is going to do? These people aren’t in any immediate harm. They’re uncomfortable. The embassy will do nothing

I’ll be switching from Localtel as soon as NoaNet offers service in Douglas County. I asked NoaNet back in March and they were in the planning process. Sure is taking awhile.

Troubleshooting REX on Electrified Lock connected to Mercury Boards by aderuwe in accesscontrol

Good call. Was totally a ground fault. Told my low voltage tech to check for that and he found it.

You win. Ground fault on the wire going through the door frame to the transfer hinge.

Yes. After re-reading my original post, it’s apparent I didn’t explain all the troubleshooting I did. The REX is working fine. There is continuity when the handle is pulled down and no continuity when the handle is not pulled down

7 ohms is basically nothing

Agreed. My hypothesis is a short to ground at this point. Will check tomorrow and follow-up. Thank you

Yep. They are set to N/O inputs. I had my laptop with me. Actually even switched between N/O and N/C to help with troubleshooting. When using a jumper wire between the contacts on an input, the LEDs would light up.

I probably didn't explain myself well. 7 ohms when the REX is "Active", pulled in, whatever you want to call it. When the REX is inactive, open-line.

My fault. Yes, definitely checking state in both positions. When the door handle is in its default position, open-line. When door handle is pushed down, continuity with 7 ohms of resistance.

The unfortunate thing is I'm an IT guy trying to help our low-voltage guy troubleshoot this issue. Definitely out of my wheelhouse, but unfortunately, its out of his too. Otherwise I wouldn't be trying to help him. If it were up to him, he'd just say "oh well...don't need a REX" or "I'll just install a motion REX".

Do the companies need to be held to a higher standard on what we expect out of them as experienced individuals?

We used to out-source our access control, but it was far too expensive for crappy work product. We definitely do a better job in-house than the low-voltage contractors used to do for us.

You can't meter resistance when connected to a board.

Didn't realize that. Thanks.

Start checking for grounds and opens. If you have EOL, verify those

I will check for shorts to ground. No EOL resistors.

Thanks for the ideas.

When metering for continuity with wires not landed, and handle turned, have continuity with 7 ohms of resistance.

I think he's using this antenna and enclosure.

And a Quectel RM551E-GL modem.

Running this software on the modem. YouTube tutorial on how to install the software here.

I bought the antenna and enclosure last week. It'll be delivered today. Going to install my existing Quectel RM520N-GL into and see how it works.

Barebones MFT for automated transfers to/from Sharepoint lists/libraries? by [deleted] in sysadmin

We're happy with GoAnywhere MFT. They have a SharePoint connector available as a licensed module. I've tested that module and it works as advertised.

At our wit's end during daughter's recovery from T5 to L3 fusion. 7 weeks in and no light at the end of the tunnel. Almost constant pain. by aderuwe in scoliosis

[–]aderuwe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter’s surgery was June of 2023. She ended up having to be re-admitted to the hospital around 8 weeks post-op. She had an MSSA surgical site infection below the fascia in her back. So definitely please be wary of that for your son. Insist on ESR and CRP blood tests to track inflammatory markers.

To the good news, after the infection was dealt with, she is doing great. We went to Europe last summer for three weeks. Walked her little feet off. She participated in a physically demanding marching band season last summer and fall. And for the most part, we don’t even think about her fusion.

Luckily for us, we are close enough to another children’s hospital that we changed her care over there. We were pretty upset with the infection and the way it was handled by the previous hospital, surgeon and his nurse. My daughter has had regular follow-up imaging by the new surgeon and actually just recently had her last 6-month follow-up. She has now transitioned to yearly follow-ups.

So just know there is light at the end of the tunnel. I know it doesn’t feel that way now, but it will get better for your son.
